Weird Americanisms (UK vs USA thread)

Holy mother of God... Them besmirching the good name of Cheddar like that is an insult to the British people.

Edit:

American Chefs on British TV: I can't think of a single one.

British Chefs on American TV: Gordon Ramsey, Jamie Oliver, and isn't Nigella on some weird food version of The Voice called The Taste or something now? Probably a fair few more.

You're basing your idea of the quality of American cuisine by how many American chefs are on British TV?

Well judging by this thread, some Brits need to bust out the school books again.
I would, but my history textbooks covered the communist revolutions of Russia, China and Cuba and I know you'd probably die of a heart attack if I started talking about dem darn commies.

The reason they end up on TV in the UK is probably because the audience care more about cooking and such in the UK.

???

we have got whole networks dedicated to food in the US. in fact we have got channels dedicated to the strangest things. The point is the media market in the US is huge and so you will find chefs from other countries try to make it here as a celebrity or otherwise.

As did ours.

Oh and thanks for lumping us all in with a single group again. Another example of British ignorance in this thread. Keep em coming dude.

we have whole channels dedicated to cooking in the uk too and we have a lot of cooking shows in prime time on the main networks

Britain is an extremely multicultural country, we had a huge empire at one stage and people's of all countries in that empire live in Britain in great numbers.

You can get a huge variety of different foods in pretty much every town and city in the UK.

People are just playing with stereotypes.

why are most british ppl fat as well?

Let's be honest here. Britain is like America's smaller bro. British culture has totally copied US culture now.

They are the fat ones in the union. Something like 7 or 8 % higher than the rest.

Birmingham sits at 29%.

Well, you do a lot of things better than us. Movies and TV shows blow ours out the water for one, so it's not really surprising.

I still wouldn't want to live in America though, there's a lot of things you do I'm not a fan of at all.

Like wot?

This whole thread is hilarious because the two countries are a lot more similar than either of us want to admit.
Even with how much to the right this country has shifted we are still very much distinct from America culturally and politically.

In some ways we are similar I'll cede that.

Was going to say UK is better because of the NHS, a history of pro-socialist politicians and gun bannings but you guys have some shitty anti-'blasphemy' stuff popping up lately to appease religious feelings, along with the obsession with avoiding libel. America sucks in most things (relative to top ranking 1st world countries) but I do love the first amendment deeply.

Our tabloids cannot be trusted.

americans would probably consider our version of right wing to be positively communist

Historically, people drive/ride on the left because the majority of the population is right handed.

Try slashing at someone with your sword hand while passing them on the right side of the road!
We don't have swords here. We have guns. Don't pass.

Oh, and the obsession with their constitution in certain areas is pretty weird to me, especially in modern times.
The Constitution of the United States is literally the constitution of the United States. Without that document, there is no United States. It is no longer constituted. There would be no governing authority. It's not an infallible document, and certain things can and should be amended, but there's a reason people swear to protect the Constitution rather than the government or a crown.

http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/08/07...this-60-million-high-school-football-stadium/

Spending 60 MILLION dollars on a football stadium for a high-school is absolutely insane any way you look at it. This is in Texas btw.
Allen may not be rural-ass but it's sure as hell redneck. The strip of country between Norman, OK and Dallas, TX (including Allen, Denton, Plano, Carrolton, Southlake) and then another area around Midland/Odessa are about as crazy as it gets for handegg. They're all trying to be farm teams for university and professional teams. Everywhere else in the country is relatively normal. You'll see some other pockets of crazy in Michigan and Wisconson as well. Everywhere else in the center of the country is really basketball country.

You do see tremendous amounts of money being poured into sports over academic activities or the arts, though... that is definitely an American issue.

Look. America is better. Our country is larger, faster, stronger, and smarter. Your all just jealous of America being #1.

Gordon Ramsey, Jamie Oliver, and isn't Nigella

neither of whom specialize in "British" cooking. They all do French, Italian, and so on. Brit food...local sourced recipes are pretty dodgy.

That's because they don't want to go to the U.K.:-P

Joke post? Or do you not understand how TV works?

???

I think you are missing the point, it's not as if we expect US chefs to film a show over here, but their US shows aren't shown here(outside of Man vs Food type shows), & it's not as if food specific channels don't exist over here.

As did ours.

Oh and thanks for lumping us all in with a single group again. Another example of British ignorance in this thread. Keep em coming dude.

There is nothing wrong with referring to an American as an American, it's not as if we are lumping in Canadians(we would never do that to you Canada, regardless of your bagged milk transgressions).

Like wot?

guns, guns everywhere
acting like crazy people at cinemas
too much religious influence
tipping culture
shit health care
obsession with military

those are the serious ones that kind of irk me. probably forgot some, too

Then again England has a lot of problems, so eh.

Of course there's nothing wrong with that. There is something wrong however, with him referring to all of us as being so mortified of communism that we wouldn't even learn about it in school.

Most of what you're saying is blown way out of proportion. Shit health care is true, but we seem to be on the road to getting that sorted out. The cool thing about the US though is that it's a huge country, if you don't like certain areas, don't live there.

The crazy people at cinemas still cracks me up. You guys must think every movie features ad libbing by the crowd. It's really more the exception than the rule, unless you live in NYC. I can count the number of times I've been in a movie and it's happened on one hand.

Despite all my angry comments about stupid coffee microwaving, cheese in a can eating Americans in this thread I own one of these and it might be one of my favourite things.

I also have a full size US flag I sometimes wear as a cape.

Wow. it's like you took every stereotype and propped it up as truth.

and whatever UK shows Ramsey, Oliver etc. have done in the UK isn't shown here. But they come here to bolster their audience as "celebrity chefs". There is no incentive for Mario Batalli to cuss people out on British television

Closest thing to an American chef I've seen recently on TV is this guy

Adam-Richman-008.jpg

This explains why you Brits think we're unable to leave our front door without a healthy coating of lard. You think our freak show programs are, like, serious.

Tehee. Silly English conniggits.

Not true. Anything Ramsay has done has been brought over here. Oliver...not as much, but still a healthy showing. Ramsay is like, the exception though, because he's basically the greatest entertainment chef evah.

god tier locally sourced recipes

fish and chips
steak and chips
bangers and mash
cornish pasty
chicken tikka masala
balti
sunday roast
toad in the hole

You guys have hip hop, girls go to clubs in short mini dresses everywhere, etc etc
