What 2D game had/has the best backgrounds?

IYO ofcourse. I was replaying SotN and wondered what 2D art gaffots prefer.
Concider the art, the enviroment and the immersion.
 
I'm going to have to agree with Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, though I also like some of the things Capcom did with Maverick Hunter X, especially the first Sigma Stage with all the webs.

Jungle Beat for this generation. I think overall Super Castlevania 4 wins for me, though. It looks like your standard SNES game for most of the adventure, but has some amazing bits every once in a while.

Yoshi's Island, Astal, Yoshi's Story, and the new Gunstar are also pretty nice.
 
Metal Slug games usually have impressive looking levels. lots of character to them

the small size of the player and enemies probably helps
 
Seeing Curse and Runway make me sad that there aren't more games of the type, especially nowadays. It's probably my favorite western outlet, and easily has some of the most creative, original minds around.

Runaway is not that old.. and the sequel is on the way out. It has nothing to put up against the golden era of Lucas Arts, but it's still a pretty nice adventure game considering you don't see a whole lot of them anymore.

Man, I wish Warcraft Adventures came out. It was using the Curse engine

Playing WoW makes me really want to play this part of the Warcraft storyline

That and a Blizzard adventure game would be godly.

My point exactly. Good to hear some are still trying, but you said it, the Golden age (which, to reiterate, had some of the West's best creative output) is long gone. =\
 
I'd say Rayman ...


... partly because it had very little banding compared to most of the other games mentioned.


Basically, decent art - with better technical execution than nearly everything else mentioned.
 
It wasn't a phenomenal game but...

Magic Knight Rayearth still impresses me today with its onslaught of vivid colors and breathtaking imagery.

Some horrible bouts of slowdown though, unless Vic added those while porting it over.
 
While I sit and look at this thread, I wonder... Why the hell isn't XBLA a nest for old school Adventure titles?
