What 2D game had/has the best backgrounds?

PUT ON YOUR 3D GLASSES AND BE AMAZED
What an awesome nostalgic trip. Was that an industry promo video or a commercial that really aired on tv?

That Runaway game was beautiful and I had no idea about that Warcraft game. I've never been big on Warcraft, but seeing it as an adventure title is just magnetic in appeal for me.

Saga Frontier II murders everything(with the exception of Legend of Mana). Sorry, YI is beautiful, but it just doesn't hold a candle to those two.

BECAUSE NONE OF YOU SAID STRIDER YOU HAVE ALL FAILED.

Man I forced myself to play through this piece of shit just because of the backdrops, but I couldn't take it. Fuck Kawazu.

Last Blade 2 was great, also, I had forgotten about that.

There was an action RPG for Saturn that was very nice looking. Unfortunately, (all) action RPGs suck to me, so I can't remember the name right now.

I seem to remember Power Instinct: Matrimelee having nice backgrounds, too.

But I'd still say Daraku Tenshi wins this contest.

Gotta say I agree with most everyone on here, especially VP and Yoshi's island.

But as far as recent stuff(my memory sucks haha) I would have to say Touch Kirby. I was pretty surprised how good some of the levels look.

for me it's:

Last Resort
The Parodius Series
Goemon series (Super Famicom)
Metel Slug series
Layer Section
Thunder Force 4
Gunners Heaven
Rayman

No offense, and keep in mind I respect your opinion...but from the imgs you posted Kirby looks pretty simplistic...regarding backgrounds. I believe Kirby 3 on the SFC looked better but well, I haven't beat the game...

The backgrounds in Runaway: A Road Adventure are all pretty awesome.

Fuck... These shots and those from Monkey Island 3 make me so nostalgical.... Almost makes me shed a tear, because those days will never return! Just look at the graphics! Adventures games are STILL my fav. W0rd. Damn, adventures games rocked.

EDIT: This Runaway game... Was it ever released in Europe? I think i've would noticed this game if it was, me being an adventure freak and all. Anyone?

The general look of Kirby (DS) isn't probably THAT amazing, but here's one good example of truly stunning backround:

Yeah I didn't find the best images(Lazy and only looked for about a minute), the other poster put some better ones up.

Overall I really just liked the style, but it was really the first kirby game I played in earnest.

I'm a little surprised at the lack of older adventure titles. I suppose they don't age all that well when you look back at them. But I was always rather taken with games like:

King's Quest VII

The Kyrandia series as well

And of course Quest for Glory

It still pisses me off to this day that I paid for this game at full price, but I'd be lying if I didn't say the graphics on this game aren't amazing

That backgrounds do get a lot better toward the end of the game, but overall the game is pretty lazy graphically.

Radiant Silvergun had some great moments

You really have to see these backgrounds in motion to truly appreciate em though. That Blue City level in particular makes use of a vector style grid that covers the entire screen combined with some crazy fast scrolling, all atop a lit up cityscape making for great effect. The Moon boss speaks for itself... You have a moon, a subtle cloud effect, some stars, and a baddie that spans across the entire screen. So simple, yet sooo cool. One of my favorite moments in the game.

Some of my favorites (I wish I had screenshots for):

Popful Mail
Valkyrie Profile
Earthworm Jim
Earthworm Jim 2
Strider
Quackshot

Hell yeah. I loved the moon part.
