What Animal Crossing Wii U could look like (TheBitBlock)

If they do a video like this for Paper Mario Wii U....

This looks great but it makes me sad that we'll most likely be waiting for NX if we want another console AC game.

This reminds me too much of Project M talk where a handful of neat ideas from an individual suddenly means they are the messiah of games and the development team should bow to their wisdom. Please.

Cool, what other insider knowledge do you have on the AC franchise?
I don't really believe he could single-handedly make the best AC ever, but just looking at the ACs Nintendo has produced so far (no insider knowledge necessary) and looking at his ideas, it seems clear he'd be an asset to the team in terms of finding an appealing look for the franchise going forward, and adding some cool features and functionality.

I know a lot of people don't like Josh Thomas because he comes off narcissistic at times and petty at others, but just looking at his ideas and what he created here... Well, it's good. Like, really good.

Here's what he proposed:

New transport, which he even shows is just an extension of what they have already done. The customisation feature is neat, but again you could something similar in New Leaf by changing the Train Station's look.

The toolbox. This is a good idea, as using the envelope trick is something I'm sure the development team must be aware of people doing.

Stickers. I'll be honest, letter writing is the least used feature in any animal crossing game for me so while it looked pretty I wouldn't make use of this type of feature.

Then you have the graphics, which is where the video really shines, but considering we have no idea what Nintendo would do for Animal Crossing NX (because we all know it won't be on Wii U) we really can't comment on what Nintendo's approach to this is. Remember this is the Nintendo that's really impressed this gen with their graphics (remember Mario Kart Wii to 8?) so honestly I wouldn't bring their lazy Wii effort into this. New Leaf however was a nice looking game for 3DS.

And that's it. New Leaf on the other hand introduced oodles of ideas that the series really needed, like greater house expansion, public project, town creeds, item customisation and even changing the character proportions to name just a few.

I'd say the series is in the hands of a competent team. Even Happy Home Designer added interesting new idea to the house designing element (ceiling items, changing windows, exterior decoration etc) of the series and that's just a spinoff.

If you were to say this video demonstrated more ideas than New Leaf that would be quite frankly poppycock.

No one suggested that. What it -did- clearly demonstrate was a bigger leap in presentation than any of the existing AC titles has ever made, despite spanning several generations at this point.

Also, you missed some features, like the map annotations, outdoors camera, and the individual concepts for hot air balloons, public works, etc. Hopefully he'll go into more detail there in the future. Lots of cool decor and decorations shown off.

And it's worth noting he probably has more ideas, but he doesn't present them until he creates assets for them. Being one person, that takes time.

But yeah, it's mainly the visuals that are impressive at this point.

Too ambitious for Nintendo. Something like this would require actual effort put in.
I'm hoping Nintendo will start to invest more in the production values of these games. I'm sure they'll make back the money.

For clarification, this is just part 1 of an on-going series. Presumably he has more ideas for AC he hasn't talked about yet

Nintendo is staying afloat thanks to realizing they don't need to increase the development costs of their big sellers for no real reason. Animal Crossing and Pokemon staying as they are and not becoming bigger budget affairs allows for nonsensical games like Xenoblade X to exist.

Sure, but after the gorgeous presentation of Mario Kart 8, I can't help but want to see similar love given to another big franchise like Animal Crossing.

I don't see why this matters at all. I'm sure Nintendo has business justifications for literally every they make. It doesn't mean the end-product still can't be a disappointment to the consumer

AC is the Seinfeld of videogames — a game about nothing — so Nintendo should at least invest in the immersion factor. That way I can enjoy beautiful landscapes and great atmosphere while, well, doing nothing!

This looks beautiful! Love his ideas as well.

Well, it doesn't exist yet, for one. So he's already way ahead

I would be more surprised if it didn't exist. It's been a long time since new leaf and considering they skipped a proper version on the Wii U I'm sure the next proper installment isn't just beginning development. I'm betting these animal crossing projects in between are just fillers until the NX is ready. Id be surprised if it didn't come out before the end of 2017

If the NX is a console-and-handheld combo, AC would be a perfect title for it. Play on the TV at home and bring your town on the road on your portable.

In addition to these things, I kinda wish Nintendo would add more reason to play the game daily. Watering my flowers and talking to people so they don't move out is kind of boring after a few weeks.

Yeah, I forget how lazy is Nintendo with franchises like Splatoon, Animal Crossing, Zelda or XenoX because that one rihductive Mario Party disguised as an Animal Crossing game...

I hate stuff like this

My wife doesn't play any video games but she does play animal crossing. She put hundreds of hours into the 3ds version.

She would get a new 3ds animal crossing in a heartbeat. She would also get a Wii u (which we don't have) just for animal crossing.

I tried to explain the house decorating one (the new one) but when she heard about the cards and stuff she was immediately not interested.

I don't know the economics of all of this but I do know that Nintendo missed out on at least 1 3ds sale for no new true animal crossing and 1 wii u and game sale for no no animal crossing on wii u.

Lots of cool ideas, great video.

What if Animal Crossing is the next Nintendo series to have a yarn installment, like Kirby and Yoshi did?

A Wii U Animal Crossing visually probably would've looked identical to that Amiibo Festival game.

Still wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that's a repurposed 'Animal Crossing U' that got canned when Nintendo figured it wouldn't sell enough and they decided to cut their losses. Unless the NX immediately bombs I'd be surprised if that console doesn't get it at least.

This was a much bigger tease considering it was real and running on the Wii U hardware:

No way the next AC could have these small but awesome upgrades.
Josh is clearly a big fan of Animal Crossing and if anything that helped keep his ideas grounded in reality. Things like new transport, customisation features and inventory optimisation are all fairly believable things that could happen since similar things were introduced with New Leaf.

Wow holy shit now I'm remembering how disappointed I was at E3. I leaped in excitement for a Wii U Animal Crossing but as soon as I saw what it actually was...

Some cool ideas, but he doesn't really propose a coherent game idea. What a console AC really needs is something to justify it being on a home console, and therefore make it different from the earlier games that are very pick-up & play (and work the best on handheld). I'm not here to speculate on that, but when you look at the things New Leaf introduced to the series, that is what makes the prospect of a new AC interesting. Not just stickers or being able to draw on the map, I was hoping for something more substantial. That said, the visual elements he created are awesome. The hot air balloon designs especially.

Would like a version where I can transfer between my Wii U and 3DS.

I just want to choose where people move. Nintendo please...

I would like a bigger Animal Crossing game that takes place on a larger map with possible regions where specific animals could live. The Mayor story element adds alot to the mechanical structure of the game, so having to manage a whole region and keep animals happy would be great.

Guys, you should Nintendo know better by now. Do you really think a official Animal Crossing would look as beautiful as this on the Wii U? You are expecting too much. If all, this is what it would look like:

Just add a little bloom here and there.

yeah, all of nintendos first party games for Wii u look just like the previous gens games with bloom. good post man. great job.

That was pretty cool. I love the blimp idea and the lighting. But some of the color palette looked a little flat. The menu revisions were really good as well.

It originally appeared on home console, so I don't know what more it needs to justify being on one. Particularly if they make it look anything like Josh's video. I still think the original's the best game in the series, and prefer playing AC at home where I can fully relax.

I was hoping for something more substantial.

This is only Part 1 of a multi-part series; he's not done yet

These assets and engine are from the DS/Wii era. 3DS version proved (and MK8 level too) that there is much more potential.

With NX there is that much potential. I hope they won't kill it with micro-transactions.

I think they should save it for the NX, if it really does have a portable/console connectivity gimmick Animal Crossing would be a great game to take advantage of it.

I've wanted a toolbox for awhile, but I never really thought about being able to draw on the map and his ideas involving mail. Those are concepts I'd be super excited to see in a future Animal Crossing game.

Rewatching the video made me remember how much I want them to bring back the hills of past AC games. I'm tired of the flat world in the newer ones.

Oh, and soccer balls!

I want it just like Mario Kart 8 has it, and make it 3rd person with fully controllable camera. I'm tired of the spool world, and feel like full 3D is the next step. Plus taking pictures would be awesome.
