What are the Best Local Multiplayer Games of All Time?

I'm trying to put together some awesome fun couch gaming.

Games such as Smash Brothers, Mario party, Tetris Attack, etc. Can choose from any system/generation.

Not a fan of split screen though, I loved Goldeneye back in the day but these days I can't stand split-screen for some reason

Wait... Smash Brothers, Mario Party... where is Mario Kart?! :D

Rocket League is going to be super fun! Worms is always nice for a small round and also Towerfall.

Ugh... how could I forget Borderlands... really great fun!

And of course... Helldivers and Diablo 3

Bomberman should be a staple.

Speedball 2 for sports mode. I think the PSN/minis version has multi. Should do.

Worms in 4P mode.

Those three games are absolute staples of same-screen multiplayer in my opinion.

Aside from the usual party games which are already mentioned (smash/goldeneye/mario kart etc.) I'd like to give a shout-out to this:

Really awesome, frantic, hectic fun and soooooo addicting in multiplayer. The phrase ''just 1 more match'', has rarely been more appropriate to describe the addicting nature of a game. Recommended!
Edit: get used to splitscreen or buy a larger tv, because your missing out otherwise on a lot of gems multiplayer-wise. Another choice would be LAN-capable games.

Goldeneye N64 or PS3 even though you might dislike it, great fun when you setup the game to sniper rifles only or something!
Bomberman 8-players on Saturn
Nidhogg PS4
Sportsfriends PS4
Neo Turf Masters NeoGeo
Windjammers NeoGeo

Probably Gangbeasts? :D

Fifa, Smash Bros, Mario Kart - the holy trinity of my college apartment / dorm back in the day, and barely anything has changed.

Ideally I prefer local multiplayer to be with four or more people so, in terms of classics we return to Micro Machines Turbo Tournament is the best; mostly for endless rematches on Turbo Turns and the Sponge Ferry. Smash Bros, Bomberman, WCW Vs NWO and Super Monkey Ball 2 (for simultanrous Monkey Target) are also favourites.

There's been loads of great newcomers though: Hidden In Plain Sight and Mount Your Friends are now two of our most played multiplayer games. Sportsfriends and Towerfall are also magnificent.

Nidhogg. The tournament mode is particularly great.

Art of Balance (Wii U). The only bad part is that every player needs a controller, despite it being turn-based.

TimeSplitters 2 is easily imo the best. Campaign co-op, team, vs, bots, a ton of modes...it was great. I never played Goldeneye though so that may have been competitive with TS, I dont know.

Gears of War was pretty good as well with campaign and horde plus bots.

Funny, you already mentioned all my favorites! Smash Bros., Tetris Attack and Mario Party are all amazing multiplayer games. Mario Kart too, but I see you don't like split screen.

A lot of platformers are great multiplayer games too. LittleBigPlanet 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Adventure Wii), Super Mario 3D World. Also, Rock Band/Guitar Hero if you're into that.

Gee, I guess maybe Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

Fighting games aside, I'd probably have to with Goldeneye, which you mentioned, and Mario Kart 64 battle mode, even though you're not a fan of split screen.

One that my friends and I loved was Quake 64, I think it was. Every time someone returned a flag in CTF everyone would explode. Great fun that was...unexpected.

Edit: i never tried #IDARB, even though I downloaded it. It looks pretty fun with some friends. Also fibbage? not sure if that counts but it sounds like fun

Contra_(NES_version_screenshot).png
Contra for NES is a classic for couch co-op
TMNT: Turtles in Time on SNES was also a favorite of mine

oh my God, these are GREAT answers

Gauntlet n64 and before
Worms 2 and Armageddon
Diablo 3 PS4
Mario Kart
Mario Party N64

Depending on skill level, street fighter 4

Forgot a big one, halo 2 back in the day, 4 TV set up....friends huddled into one living room.

Smash TV
Smash Bros
Worms
Gauntlet
Perfect Dark
Halo
Mario Kart
Double Dragon
River City Ransom
Narc
Wayne Gretzky's 3d Hockey 98
Super Dodge Ball
New Super Mario Bros Wii
WWF Smackdown 2

In general, this is my answer to most questions, but in this case i think the game is a legitimate contender, especially with 4 consoles hooked up by LAN.

Can't go wrong with Bomberman or Tetris Battle Gaiden, aside from the part where you're forging long-lasting hatred for those in the room. Windjammers is another great local multiplayer game that could stand to get some more recognition.

--Edit--
Oh dang. I forgot all about Turtles in Time, so thanks for the people that brought it up. Konami had a few games like it that were pretty great to be honest. Sunset Riders is another one of those.

Bubble Bobble
Kick Off 2
Tekken 3
Pro Evolution Soccer (World Soccer and J-League Winning eleven) Series.

edit:
forgot Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge 2

Thank god someone mentioned it. I was getting more and more worried as I scrolled down without seeing any mention. Halo 1 is THE split screen game, no contest.

Did anyone play TimeSplitters 2 and Goldeneye? Which was better and why? I never played Goldeneye but I have a hard time imagining it or anything else beating TS.

Speaking of worms, what is the the most recent version that is actually good? I loved open warfare 2.
