What are the essential mech games?

Start grinding that kanji for SRW

Not really, as long as you memorize what the skills / attacks / menu whatnots do its hardly an issue. Speaking from experience 20 years ago when played SRW games with 0 Japanese knowledge for the most part.

What is the difference between Armored core 4 and Armored core for answers? They seem to have two different wiki pages.

And when you get real good you can have matches like this lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6IpcH_HqzY

ah, so they are different games. Same applies for ACV and Verdict day?

Yes.

V day is the better one. Though ACV is a HUGE step away from what the series was. They might as well named it Front Mission as thats not only how they look, but perform in general vs the cores of the previous AC games.

Ok, Armored Core seems the most technical. If I want to just play single player which PS3 armored core should I get?

fA. Would most likely be the easiest to find than trying to track down the older ones and no sense in getting 4 when fA is the superior version.

Though might fetch a higher price due to it being the popular one.

Just be ready though the game and series in general is not exactly nice to new comers. The pre ACV games that is. Since will take folks time to get used to the controls, massive amount of parts, weapons then finding optimal builds they like etc. But if you are into the mech stuff esp fast combat there really is no other title like it.

Metal Wolf Chaos.

My first thought exactly.

...and shame on you lot for not mentioning this

Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries is pure gaming bliss. I have such good memories of playing that game for days on end back when I was a kid.

I also want to go back in time and prevent myself some selling Steel Battalion.

:(

Yup, pretty much this. I have 0 Japanese knowledge and I enjoy SRW games.
You don't also have to learn Japanese to understand the story, as the stories are usualy taken from parts of the anime shows. You'll understand them if you've watched the anime.

Don't sleep on Xenosaga either. Well episode one had pretty lame mechs and mech designs for the most part, but episode two and especially three had some fucking awesome designs and fights with the mechs, even with episode two's shitty battle system.

SHOGO: Mobile Armor Division

Except that it's more just a good first person shooter that happens to have the player shooting giant guns in the hands of a giant mech half the time. The only unique mech mechanics come in the form of a not often used vehicle transformation mode.

So maybe not an essential mech game, but still a good game with mechs! Eh? Eh?

THANK YOU I HAD FORGOTTEN THE NAME OF THIS GAME

Thanks. It seems to be much cheaper in the UK so I'll try it out.

Always nice to see a potential new pilot be born lol.

due to the series being old and recording equipment not as good back then all the stuff below is LQ footage.

That is a AI for ACFA called "Rhinemaiden". "She",installed in pc, analyzes the packet of online play of acfa and makes the input to the controller of ps3, separated from pc.

What it looks like fighting that AI from a human player perspective. Thing is so fast the games targeting system has trouble keeping up with it.

re: AC for answer - play the 360 version if you can help it. the load times on ps3 are pretty abhorrent. I also managed to turn the game into a literal slide show with certain plasma weapons against large enemies which never happened on 360.

Mechwarrior 2 Titanium Trilogy

I wouldn't recommend the titanium trilogy since there were a ton of bugs and cut features. Stick to the original DOS versions. Since DOSBox is a thing they're way easier to get running these days as well.

Yeah, I got lucky. I picked it up a year or two ago for 70 USD.

The Gundam vs Gundam EXVS games are basically the Gotcha Force/Virtual On successors.

game is close to 270 and up brand new. Used fluxes depending on quality. But all are most def over 100.

------

Not sure how many remember S.L.A.I. (S.L.A.I. -Steel Lancer Arena International-) but was pretty great back in the PS2 era. Shit was hard though if you didnt manage your resources as everything costed $$$.

Pretty much all these answers are on point, but I will definitely give a nod to Cybernator (Assault Suits Valken) and Metal Warriors on the SNES. I think Cybernator was recently released on the WiiU VC.

Yes! Game is a bloody masterpiece. Not even it's spiritual successor, Gundam vs, could top it. Only flaw is that you need dolphin for solid 4p games.

I love me some Gotcha Force, but...

otherwise holy shit someone made a real nineball

terra nova strike force centauri
heavy gear 1 / 2

wish I could play metal wolf chaos

edit: also cybernator and metal warriors on the super nintendo weren't mentioned enough in the thread yet. there are some nice looking pc clones of these on steam, been meaning to check out some of those.

And holy crap, the load times on the Macross vid are soooo long. I heard the last Macross game on the PS3 that was kinda open world or something like that was butts in comparison.

Yeah Macross 30 was not as good as the other Macross titles unfortunately. Since they made it some weird action rpg.

The PSP ones are still fucking awesome though if you never got the chance to pick them up.

(I have tens of hours logged on the AC games, and I'm still not sure how they do most of these effects)

Lots of good ones to play.

Steel Battalion - High price of entry but worth it for the experience alone.
Front Mission 3 - Fantastic mech SRPG. So many missions to play
Mechwarrior 2 - Was a fave of mine when I got my first windows pc back in the 90s. Wish I could play it again now.
Gundam VS series - pretty much every game in this series is a gem.
70s Robot Anime Geppy X - A shooter that is one of the best homages to the mech anime world of the 70s. Pure awesomeness!
Super Robot Taisen series - although I haven't played a lot of the newer games since Ive fallen behind on newer mech anime and so I have no idea half the shows in it, the old ones are some of the most enjoyable SRPGs around
Sakura Taisen - I really loved the characters and the stories in this one, well mostly from 1 and 2 at least, but the series is still a blast to play.

Theres more Im sure Im forgetting but those are all a blast to try out.

I kind of think an action RPG is a good way to do Macross, though. Are the controls bad?

The action games have totally gotten it beat in all aspects. It went a step backwards mechanics wise compared to Artdinks other Macross titles.

Its not a bad game and still well received, but its not at the same quality level of their previous titles either.

this game is like mega obscure but there is a massively novelty factor to it as it's just a giant love letter to getter robo
i seriously did not think i'd ever see it mentioned anywhere ever

Yeah it deserves to be mentioned in any thread like this. The care and attention to make this game like they did with all the wonderful additions, like eye catches, commercials, even the old style tv clock before each episode, great voice acting, such an amazing game. I still am so glad I was able to find a copy at an incredibly cheep price when I first came to Japan over ten years ago. Now I see the game is very hard to find and pretty expensive. Its one of my prized games in my collection and really worth getting and trying.

You don't also have to learn Japanese to understand the story, as the stories are usualy taken from parts of the anime shows. You'll understand them if you've watched the anime.

Additionally the controls and menus are similar between different iterations. I would say that if you play one of the localized GBA games for a bit you probably know enough to play most of the other SRT games out there.

I really really loved Mech Commander.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MQPWE_M_EM
If you love the feel of the video, then the gameplay has got plenty more where that came from:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLjn8JvgOMA

...also, Metal Fatigue:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSCOaowF2UI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Kx5yOnqIX4
MechCommander 2 actually pretty good as well, darn shame Microsoft disbanded the team right after the first patch (which was more like a hotfix). I've always considered the hardpoint-based loadout superior to the purely weight based one.

As stated several times, the Gundam Vs. series are bliss.

I also would like to add Gundam: Zeonic Front to the list, shit is so good. Tactical mech game where you play as the Zekes, it's fucking fantastic.
