What are the essential mech games?

Besides all the great answers like Armored Core (especially AC2 and For Answer), Front Mission 3 and Zone of the Enders 2, I think everybody needs to try out Ring of Red.
It's one of the best TRPG's on ps2, filled with intense battles and weird low-tech mechs.

I loved this as a kid

You gotta leave examples man! It was a good game for its time and something indeed different. Though the AI did cheat like a motherfuck at times though.

While I hate linking people to vids with commentary heres 2 different review vids

Sorry man, should probably have posted some videos. I don't think videos really do justice to how nerve-wracking the gameplay can be though. It's slow paced, but one of the most intense games I have ever played on the later levels.

The intro is still pretty good though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UuvwB4NvHk

really nice game, was quite difficult iirc

We so need a current gen mech game... Other than Xenoblade.

And Titanfall is more like an infantry shooter that just so happens to have mecha.

Already lots of love for everything I'd recommend in this thread with the exception of MechCommander Gold which I only saw mentioned once. MechCommander is a fantastic mech game if you like strategy games. I don't like MC2 as much, but it's still worth playing.

And now I want to replay MechCommander for like the 4th time since it's been a few years... thanks OP, my backlog hates you now.

Incorrect, in Ring of Red you directly control the mechs and can only order infantry around.

I finished Ring of Red and I wouldn't say direct control. The mech hardly moves. You do aim the mech gun but it takes forever to take an accurate shot. I spent more time controlling the infantry than controlling the mech.

Lost Planet had probably the most satisfying mechs in recent memory. It's a stealth mech game really since only few people remember how big of a role the mechs played in that game. The mounting animation alone was so goddamn cool.

Game was so underrated mostly because the sequels soured everyone.

I'm a huge fan of mechs, and LP is the best time I've had controlling a mech and really feeling like I'm navigating the walking machinery. I also really enjoyed LP2. It has an insane space level where you can combine mechs. This needed to be expanded upon.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but Front Mission Evolved was a lot of fun. The end game gets pretty crazy with a very difficult last boss. Again, this game feels like I'm controlling a mech. Stuff like ZoE doesn't necessarily feel like I'm in a mech.

I reviewed a game years ago called Mytran Wars on the PSP. Not so much a "mech game" as "a game with mechs in it".

I belive my summary was it was like playing a game of chess, only your opponent is three storeys tall and can blow your pieces to, well, pieces

When it was still up and running Chromehounds was the best mech game since MechWarrior 2. Nothing came close.

A sequel will probably never happen but I hope to god that someone makes something similar one of these days

Gungriffon series (particularly Blaze)

Armored Core (my personal favourites are the original, 2 and For Answer)

Gundam Battlefield Record U.C 0081

Wasn't it called Robotech : Battlecry? I had so much fuckin fun with that game, and I didn't even know Robotech was a thing, lol.

That is indeed what it was called, I just couldnt remember the subtitle because it was late at night lol

I believe there were two Robotech Games for Sixth Gen consoles: Invasion and BattleCry. BattleCry was the better of the two.

Mechwarrior 2 Titanium Trilogy

Don't get the Titanium Trilogy; it made a lot of unwarranted changes.

I wish the MechWarrior games were on Steam.

MechWarrior 2 is worth playing for its soundtrack alone.

This thread warms my hart. I hope we get some great mecha games for current gen. Vanquish always made me wonder what Platinum could do for the genre. I don't think I've seen them mentioned but the Gundam Battle franchise on psp is also freaking great. Second ps3 Gundam game War, record uc81 it was called I think, was also amazing. Reminds me, the Wii Gundam game was great fun too.

Yeah Macross 30 was not as good as the other Macross titles unfortunately. Since they made it some weird action rpg.

The PSP ones are still fucking awesome though if you never got the chance to pick them up.

that picture is missing the best macross game!

AI that someone in japan created shit is insane. Once you start playing you will realize just how messed up this things movements are.

What it looks like fighting that AI from a human player perspective. Thing is so fast the games targeting system has trouble keeping up with it.

I don't even... I can only second what others have said, ACFA and ZoE are great games but seeing this... I only ever managed to cheese myself through the story-mode of ACFA since I for my life can't control the game anywhere near properly which might be related to my disability or not though seeing this... I thought I've seen all there is to see on YouTube about the game but this is on another level, this AI is scary as much as amazing it is o.o

Gundam Side Story 0079: Rise from the Ashes for the Dreamcast. It's really good.

PTZrg69uzw_DpBbnBZO-Lhiz7zgLZbv1Fybd2Ny4.jpg

The most realistic Gundam game. Fewer mobile suits and the ability to fail objectives and trigger new ones. An excellent game.

Rise from the Ashes is my favorite Gundam game. I really wish somebody would make another 1st person in-cockpit gundam game. It really captured the 0079 era mobilesuits and mechanics well. Everything had a good amount of weight to it.

Also, the PS1 DYRL Macross shooter:

MechWarrior 2
MechWarrior 3
MechWarrior 4 Mercenaries
MechCommander Gold
MegaMek

MechCommander Gold is really pretty much perfect as far as translating BattleTech gameplay into a real-time game. They nailed the aesthetics of the Mechs, the landscapes, and the weapons systems. PPCs looked like harnessed streams of lightning particles, Gauss rifles shot silvery ferro-magnetic slugs, and the missiles fired in long volleys with bright exhaust trails. The one aspect that it lacked was heat management, but I'm not sure how you'd really model that in real-time.

MechWarrior 4 really missed the mark with the aesthetics, I feel. The Atlas looked like a complete joke, with hands that were simply large polygonal blocks with stripes across. The Summoner had symmetrical arms, which is completely wrong. And the missile ports were all hexagonals instead of round circles. From a visual perspective, MechWarrior 3 was far superior in capturing the correct BattleTech look. You had actually detailed armor plates instead of giant criss cross marks. And when you took a cockpit hit, the cockpit glass HUD would actually crack and splinter to show damage. This was all stripped away in MW4. Oh, and of course they straight up re-engineered Mech designs in some cases. The Mad Dog, for example, no longer looked like a predatory vulture with thin long laser barrels, but got standard boxy omnipod arms, along with some sort of rotating turret in the chin. What a mistake.

MW2 is probably the most immersive of the MW games. The grand Refusal War between Clan Jade Falcon and Clan Wolf, those two great rivals, was a perfect backdrop to introduce the Clans to new gamers. The concept of zellbrigen, Crusader and Warden factions, the Exodus of General Kerensky, and Trials were all woven together in this epic war and delivered a wonderful sense of alien culture and mystique. Quotes from The Remembrance, the revered Clan historical saga, delivered poetic justification for the actual gameplay missions.

By comparison, MW3 and MW4 weren't all that interesting. MW3 was simply about a secret mission to a backwater Smoke Jaguar planet named Tranquil. While it was supposed to be related to the larger mission of Task Force Serpent sent to the SJ homeworld of Huntress, Tranquil ended up being rather boring and isolated. It would've been amazing if the game had actually been about Task Force Serpent and their desperate conquest and last stand on Huntress while Smoke Jaguar reinforcements landed en masse.

MW4 tried for some emotion by having your family killed off in the beginning of the Fedcom Civil War but it just ended up feeling lame playing the role of a whiny young Duke, accompanied by terribly laughable FMV. Even now, it gives me a bad taste in my mouth. This was stuff even the Syfy channel wouldn't want to air. MW4 Mercs thankfully did away with the lame FMVs and simply delivered a Mercenaries campaign with choice, roaming around the Inner Sphere to take on a variety of jobs, and even heading to Solaris VII, the Game World. Engaging in gladiatorial arena battles with other Mechs to earn money and fame felt a lot better than plodding along on a stupid revenge plot. Still, there wasn't that amazing sense of lore that MW2 had in spades. You were just a dumb mercenary for hire, paying bills and selling loot and buying up Mechs. At a certain point, I believe you had to choose sides in the Fedcom Civil War, but I don't believe there were any real differences, other than the final mission being different. If you picked Davion, you had to go and assault Nondi Steiner on Tharkad, along with blowing up a bunch of Overlord dropships, which was fun. And if you picked Steiner, I think it was some mission to go after Arthur Davion or something... it's been way too long for me to remember. And of course, the final close of the game ended with a giant bloody red hand, signifying the Word of Blake Jihad. Ugh. Less said about that, the better.

Getting MechWarrior 2 running on a modern PC is really tough. I want to try it out but am too incompetent with PCs.

Gotta roll with Zoukka and Adam Blue on Lost planet 1 & 2. Although Zouk I dunno how the heck that is considered a stealth game.....

MechWarrior 2 on the PC. I don't even know how to get it to run on modern computers.

It might as well be a Mech simulator, such a fantastic game.

I really like Mechwarrior 3. I know that is not a popular opinion.

It has a few issues. The weapons are completely imbalanced because they simply converted over the weapons values from the boardgame, without compensating for the fact that all the weapons in the boardgame fired at the same rate, one turn. So now you've got small lasers that deal the same amount of damage, but fire way faster than a gauss rife. Well guess what, the small laser is gonna be super freakin powerful as a result.

Also, the multiplayer was a horrible laggy mess.
