I regularly hear this, but MD is definitely one of the more interesting US state flags IMO. Definitely busy, but it doesn't really clash color-wise, and it's very recognizable even in low-wind conditions.


Basically the worst flags to me are just the bland stripe ones. Looking at you, Germany, Italy, Ireland, et al.

At least in the US we've got thinner stripes and some stars to mix it up.

Yep, so boring and uninspired. At least Brown County spent some time designing their flag. They could've easily gone the lazy route and picked three random colors.

I actually really like the US flag. Stars and stripes both have meaning, the colors are taken from our history as a British colony, and the red stripes on the outside was designed that way because we were unaware and did not care about the standards for flags having white stripes on the outside.

In a way its become symbolic of America wanting to forge its own path not bound by European bureaucracy. Not wanting something that was told to be the standard and norm for every single flag.

A mostly bright red flag doesn't say 'nice' to me. It says aggressive and unreasonable. I know in vexilliology it's meant to represent the blood of those spilled for that nation's existence, but to me that just says nationalism and war-mongering.
