What class do you usually play in MMOs?

SolVanderlyn

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I've recently returned to Guild Wars 2 (Expect a RttP thread as soon as I hit 80 - 75 now) and have been leveling my Guardian.

I almost always play the Paladin type class in MMOs. Something about being the hero, the protector, the beacon of faith and charisma for the team - it appeals to me on a deeply intrinsic level. I was a Blood Elf Paladin in my WoW glory days. I was a Paladin in FFXIV. I've always enjoyed the class more than any other. Tanking hits, healing friends, and wielding a blade all at the same time - it's the best of all worlds, and they look great doing it, too. Honorable shout out to Warriors - the more offensive version of the Paladin. If I play Warrior, I usually make it female for whatever reason, which started after I played through Mass Effect as FemShep and thought she was really cool.

My second choice is usually, somewhat ironically, the least honorable - the assassin or thief. Lurking in the shadows, unseen, nuanced and extremely deadly. Backstabs, poisons, subterfuge, you name it: you work behind the scenes, and you do some of the biggest damage of all. I was a Nightblade in Elder Scrolls Online and an Assassin in Ragnarok Online, and enjoyed murdering things on both.

What's your favorite, and why?

I like support characters who buff friends and debuff enemies. Bard from ffxi was pretty much the perfect type of role I like to play.

DPS clases because I suck at any kind of support role and I only tank when no one else wants to or can't.

DPS for similar reasons. I hate tanking and maintaining aggro or healing and avoiding aggro - just let me wade in and fuck everything up and have everyone else worry about party dynamics.

Almost always a Healer/Healing class. Love the feeling of supporting a party and being there and saying I got you fam, go ham.

Tera: Mystic

BnS: LOL everyone is dps because there are no roles and part of the reason why no one plays that game.

Currently playing FF14, which so far I'm enjoying, Scholar leveling was been fun and probably the 1st MMO where I havent't skipped through text/cutscenes.

Either a healer/support or a thief/rogue. I like being the pillar of the team, a back row kind of guy that helps the hitting party get shit done.

Recently, the thief/rogue type character (usually squishy but fast, mobile with some kind of gimmick) has also been on my list after pretty much ignoring it in any kind of RPG. Usually characters like this are a bit more technical but very rewarding if you can do them right.

Black Mage (Magic DPS) currently in FFXIV.
because magic is awesome!
big explosions and destructive power!
and because Vivi is my fav FF character (FFIX) :3

Support. Currently main BRD (Bard) in FFXIV since it's about as close to support class you can get IMO. Thinking of switching to straight DPS though (black mage).

If we are talking in pure general terms I tend to gravitate towards melee classes mostly because I hate cast times but I'll really play anything that has good flow for pve or feels awesome to play in pvp.

I don't really have a set archetype that I'll play. Some times I wanna be fast and mobile, other times I wanna be a truck and some times I wanna be sneaky. I just prefer melee.

I have a personal vendetta against healers and feel like they are genuinely fun suckers so I generally tend to avoid them.

Paladin.

I played as a Paladin (tank spec) during my short stint in World of Warcraft, and I have been maining Paladin ever since FF XIV A Realm Reborn was released. I enjoy tanking.

DPS with fun mechanics, generally. DRK in XI, MNK in XIV, etc. Also, the hardest class to blame for wipes. Even if you did fuck up a DPS check, you're in the same boat as the other 4+ DPS.

WoW: Warrior, Paladin, Druid
FFXI & XIV: Warrior/Paladin
Mabinogi: Lance
Vindictus: Karok
ESO: Dragon Knight focusing on Sword+Board/Earthen Heart/Heavy Armor

So tanks.

MMOs:

Magic warrior hybrids are the coolest to me. It can be either dps, healer, or tank. I generally like to have one of each tri.

I also really enjoy Buffer types. In recent times, I really enjoyed Bard in XIV. It's not a pure buffer. But I very much enjoyed using my songs appropriately.

In ARPGs: Everything. The struggle is real.

Rogue/thief, pretty much always. Unless it doesn't exist, then I might just not play the game. I sometimes fall back on warrior dps types, because I like to swing a big weapon around.

DAoC: Infiltrator
SWG: Smuggler
WoW: Rogue
GW2: Thief
WAR: Choppa/Witch Elf
ESO: Nightblade

Always seems to be Tank, even though I get nervous leading the party and fear losing enmity. Especially with people who are speedrunning a dungeon and it's my first time doing it.

I always go for the swordsman type which tends to be Tank, hey at least I get to see the bosses up close.

Always DPS, and if possible, always Monks or hand to hand styled classes.

My main in both WoW and FFXIV is currently a Monk.

If I can't be a Monk, it'll either be another physical based DPS class, either a dual weilder or a melee magic hybrid such as Enhancement Shaman or Frost DK. Mage Knight kinda deal.

Failing that, it would be a DPS class with a very large weapon.

In fantasy-themed games, I tend to prefer the plate-wearing 2-handed melee weapon DPS class.

I realize that's a little vague when it comes to WoW these days, but to be more specific, just the straight-up Warrior. No magic, no nonsense - hitting people really hard and taking hits.

Occasionally I will make an archer-type or a healer of some sort, but most of the time - Warrior. I can't play cloth caster classes, though. My brain just isn't wired for it.

Changes from game to game. Depends on how the class is made, what their armor looks like, what races can play them. I loved Necromancers and Shadow Knights in Everquest, but I strongly dislike Death Knights in WoW for example.

I usually go with a Hunter/Archer or a Rogue/Thief type class and a caster if it's interesting like a Warlock or something i don't much care for bland wizard/mage type class.

In the past I was always the healer (White Mage) and in the present i've been DPS (Dragoon/Samurai/Etc) for a change of pace.

Generally as my main, I'll do a Tank character, unless tanking is super unsatisfying. Then I'll do a side rogue and mage, and slowly grind them up as DPS almost always takes longer in MMOs than tanks.

Really though, if the MMO is good enough, I'll make one of each character and see where I have the most fun in that particular game (almost always tanks still). I just like being able to control the pace of play.

I have found I really really hate games without the Trinity though. Guild Wars 2 was just a mess from a group standpoint, and is the reason I don't play it anymore.

I almost always end up maining a pure healer, even if I start off as something else. I like the robes and other gear that comes with being a magic class but often dislike the slow cast times that come with being a Mage. Plus, I prefer support.

Secondary is generally a paladin, cuz I love sword and board but dislike looking like a barbarian (warriors).

This is really only based off of WoW and FFXIV as far as MMOs go though. I haven't played enough of other MMOs to settle, but I mained Druid in WoW and main WHM in FFXIV. FF is also getting me into ninja/rogue DPS.

Once upon a time I liked to be the special snowflake. I like utility and all of that jazz. Now I don't really give a fuck and I look for cool abilities before I make a choice. I gravitate towards stealthy characters generally, but I've been pretty eclectic overall. I will say I prefer melee or light ranged/bow and arrow types. Not really into casters.

Muds I used to play: Rogue/warrior/mage generally.
UO: I was mostly melee built
EverQuest: Monk
Dark Age of Camelot: Berserker
Star Wars Galaxies: Some kind of smuggler, I forget how that game even used professions but they were varied IIRC
City of Heroes: Broadsword/Regen Scrapper
World of Warcraft: Rogue, then Death Knight
Rift: Cleric (Game only had 4 classes, I liked that Clerics could do all roles)
Tera: Berserker or Destryoer or whatever it was
Guild Wars 2: Guardian
Wildstar: Engineer
Final Fantasy 14: Warrior primarily.

I think that's everything I seriously played.

Typically Mage/Support. What I'm best at has always been an offensive support. Basically quick decision making and fast reflexes to save someone, CC a group, etc.

Ive never played an MMO but I know if I do its gonna be FFXIV.

But based on what I always pick in rpgs that allow it im always a thief/rogue type.

Im just concerned ill get sucked in and itll be a huge timesink i cant afford to have.

Ranger/Hunter and Hybrid classes (druid, shaman, for example). I like the bowman archetype, and the playstyle of hybrid classes has always appealed to me. Even in games without hybrids like that, I end up playing a mixed role if I can (dps with buffs/heals for party, for example).
