What console did you enjoy the most?

For nostalgic reasons and my age/social life at the time, probably the Nintendo 64. The library complimented multiplayer parties very well, and I've lost countless hours in GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, and Diddy Kong Racing. Rare were at their peak and I was buying more or less everything they shit out, along with Nintendo's gems which gave me a lot of post-school single player stuff to fuck around with. Even though in retrospect I could see it as a system with luls in the library and its awful market performance in Australia, I always had games to play that I was loving, friends eager to play those games with me, and a good few friends with their own N64 library to swap games with.

As I grew older and came into my own economy, time management, etc I've naturally become more critical, picky, and economic with my gaming purchases and time. Which is fine. But in terms of blissfully ignorant golden years of youth gaming, nothing beats the Nintendo 64.

PS1.

I loved gaming back then and while the PS2 was an awesome jump, half way through I leaned heavily on the Xbox so it was more of a half generation for each console.

Twisted Metal 2, Legend of Dragoon, MGS, Syphon Filter, GT2, every game I played was amazing and diverse. There wasn't templates for control schemes and pretty much zero homogenization so everything felt unique and fresh.

I loved going to the rental store and picking out games based on their cover, or hearing from a friend how awesome this and that is.

PS3 is a close second, I love the embrace of the artsy games it had from high budget to PSN games, after a rough start it became consistent with quality. Maybe in time it will surpass the PS1 but right now I'll stay with the OG.

Probably PS2, followed up by PS3. There were just so many amazingly good games made for it, and a lot of weird low selling shit too that I love. Such a good console.

gosh, just looking at it gives me a rush of emotions.

plus this and pokemon yellow..

goddamn.

Dreamcast cause it came out when I just started uni (so the workload wasn't what it was going to be!), I was single for those couple of years (pretty sure I cancelled a date to play more Skies of Arcadia), had a job (so I can pay for stuff) and I was still at home (so I just paid for petrol and that's about it).

Definitely one of the Xboxes. To me, games that looked like PGR 3 did and the way it played online were conpletely unprecedented in 2005. The fact that I was playing this game with other people who weren't there was amazing. I never had XBL on the original console so the 360 will always hold a place in my heart as the introduction to online play. It did just about everything right, and I have such fond memories of playing the Halo games on it too.

The PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16, followed by the NES. Despite limited application, I was blown away by Turbo's CD-ROM use for games, years before Sony decided to make a console.

I'd probably put the 360 as my third favorite.

Call it nostalgia if you want, but I can't think of a better and more enjoyable time overall with a console than the NES. So many absolutely fun games and also so many challenging ones. I can still remember the first time I watched the cinematic sequences in Ninja Gaiden and having my mom come look cause it was 'movie like'. Yup, pretty sure I used those exact words.

But yeah there were so many games that were good and are still fun today. SNES would be a distant second.

In terms of library depth, the PS2 is unmatched by any other console but I think I'm going to go for the PS1. 3D games were such a new thing back then and developers were trying all kinds of shit, some that worked and others that were horrible but still kinda interesting. That kind of uniqueness that made gaming fun and interesting went away for a long time before eventually being revived by indies.

It also doesn't hurt that of all the generations, it has the most of my favourites. MGS1, Suikoden 2 and RE2 are my big three but I also have a lot of fondness for Tekken 3, SH, Dino Crisis 1-2, FFVII-IX and a bunch of others.

I'm sure for a lot of people will answer with whatever they played in their young teens, or possibly in college. For me, the 360 came shortly after college though. I love me some FPS/TPS, and there were plenty on 360. Gears of War and Dead Space were amazing, Call of Duty was a hell of a lot of fun when it was still fresh, Mass Effect, Borderlands, and lots more.

My passion for video games and my most time spent in gaming came from this badass red and white gaming box. Famicom is still the best.

PS2. It's when I started working in high school and having the money to buy my own games that did it. Such a great library, plus I finally had the freedom to buy my own games.

Easily the PS2, for me it's not even close.
Second place would probably be the N64 but the PS2 will always be the king for me, and I sincerely hope that some time in the future there will be a console (I don't care who makes it) that gives me the sheer depth and variety of gameplay the PS2 offered.

Dreamcast.

Going from PS1/N64 to DC was a huge leap. There was so much fun condensed into those couple of years, man. I'd been gaming since the mid-80's but with DC everything felt so fresh and new. I never had as much enthusiasm for gaming before or since.

I was born in 1982 and I still put more hours into Dreamcast than most consoles. It simply had everything I loved from the arcades (MvC, MvC2, SFIII, Tech Romancer, Virtua Tennis, HotD) and it had great (for it's time) online with Phantasy Star Online.

Oh and Shenmue.

After thinking about it I am somewhat surprised that I am leaning xbox 360. Was expecting to decide between a Nintendo system but 360 gave me some of my favorite games in Mass Effect series and Gears of War among many other great experiences.

Since I assume the PC doesn't count (it would be the clear winner for me by a giant margin if it did), I'm going to say the Dreamcast. Many of the greatest games I've ever played came out there, and the arcade sensibilities of many of the titles on the console really appeal to me.

Probably PS1, then N64. And I say this as a N64 fanboy.

That whole era had so many mature 2D genres + brand new 3D genres. Let's hope VR can bring that same magic back

N64 followed by the PS2, then it all went downhill for me.

Same here!

I upgraded to PS2 from N64 so some of those fond memories are from PS1 games I missed out on too. I'd choose PS2 though, such a great library of titles, there's something for every genera.

N64 and 360, because they were my primaries. I had a PS1/PS2, but it didn't get as much use as my N64 at all - didn't interest me as much at that age, I guess. I'm pretty young, that may have something to do with it. 360 still gives me entertainment to this day, so probably that over my N64, even though Nintendo was most definitely my childhood.
Pretty sure my first games are something like: Ocarina of Time, NFL Club 98, MGS, MGS 2, Diddy Kong Racing, No Mercy, some generic Mario Party thing.

Sega Master System probably, then followed by the Genesis. Nothing comes close to the various PCs I've had since the 80s though.

SNES felt the most videogamey. The ps2 felt as though I could play any game I wanted. Everything else that came after those two consoles have disappointed me sorely. this is the last generation I will have bought a console for.

The Neo Geo console. I miss those times. I had so much fun with this console. I wish Neo Geo would enter the console business again.

PSP was a blessing for me at a time when I didn't have much time for consoles. PS1 + PSP games any time I like. BLISS!!!!

Gamecube that console has so much quality games that all feel very unique and it was the console which got me into gaming

PS2 and Gamecube because that was the time when my brother and I gamed a lot together. Very awesome moments to me that will always hold special places in my life.

It also had the most appealing library to me at the time because I was around 10-16 when I played these consoles the most (no "real" responsibility) and I got really into any game I played.

I can't just choose one, but I have to say the GameCube/PS2 generation was my favorite. So many great games. It was a time when platformers were still a thing outside of Nintendo.

1st place: 360 the first 3 years before they changed the dash and went after the casual market. PDZero, COD4, UNO, 1vs100, Catan, Shadowrun, Lost Planet, Chromehounds ...

I think my PS4 will eventually trump the 360 mind you and I loved my PS3 waaay more than my 360 from 2009 onwards.

I started gaming on a ColecoVision so I have alot of consoles to choose from but online gaming has been my thing since 1999 when Tribes stole 2 years of my life. I always felt the 360 was there first console to truly emulate the online PC experience and that's why its my pick.

Edit: Honourable mention to the Turbografix-16 too .. Alien Crush, Devils Crush, Military Madness, Bonks Adventure, Blazing Lazers, Keith Courage in the Alpha Zone, Dungeon Explorer, 5 player Bomberman ... I loved that system too

My favorite platform is the DS since I think it has the best variety and highest quantity of games that I actually want to play available for it, but the one I've actually enjoyed the most is probably the Gamecube. I'd chalk this up to it having my favorite game (Melee), which gave me more enjoyment than some console libraries on their own. It's also probably the one console where I've played the highest percentage of games worth playing on it, on the DS there are still tons of games I need to get to, with the Gamecube I've played the majority of games worth playing through my collection + renting + playing at friend's houses. As a kid I only really played on it and my GBA and the Gamecube got more playtime than the GBA by a sizable margin. There are still some games to get to but I've played a higher percentage of what's worth owning than any other console.

I think it's kind of odd that the platform I answered here is one that wouldn't even rank on my top 3 favorite gaming systems, but it's the truth >_>.

The SNES. It guaranteed I'd be a gamer for life. It has so many timeless single player and couch multiplayer games. Hell, my old college roommate and I still do 1v1 smk battles!

Probably the PS1. I grew up with it and it was a magical thing. It captivated my imagination and attention by entertaining me endlessly. I miss the days where I was young, big imagination and nearly endless time to get absolutely lost in video gaming. PS1 hit the spot. SNES would be a close second, but it just wasn't the same. I wish I could get lost in games like I used to but there is a difference between somebody who was an early teen and a person now in their 30's. Feels like I have considerably less of an imagination and more interested in things like vagina or selective 8+/10 titles. Times change I guess, but wish I could enjoy my hobby like I used to where gaming was an enthralling experience.
