What console has the best game library?

The PS1/2 libraries are phenomenal and even though it's small the diversity of the Dreamcast's library is nothing to scoff at either. That being said I think all around it's gotta go to the DS. That little machine is just a monster in every genre.

If MS had kept up the pace from earlier this gen I probably could have possibly even held the 360 up their. With the company's current and seemingly lackadaisical attitude towards first party content I'm finding the 360's library currently an order of magnitude less than the PS3. Sony has been putting a lot of resources into having good quality exclusive content in several genres.

So are we going to do list wars or what?

THE FUCK OUTTA HERE WITH THAT PS2 SHIT!

PS2, no contest.

not really much else that needs to be said here.

For those saying the SNES- the SNES had about 750 games released in NA.

The PS2 had over Five Thousand.

It's not close at ALL.

edit: Wikipedia is quoting the PS2 at 10,000 games, but no doubt a lot of those never made it over to NA or EU.

The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling console of all time, having reached over 150 million units sold as of January 31, 2011.[6][7] This milestone was reached 10 years and 11 months after the system was released in Japan on March 4, 2000. Further, Sony said it had 10,828 titles available for the system and that 1.52 billion PS2 titles had been sold since launch.

You can almost certainly come up with more QUALITY titles for the PS2 than the SNES has, period.

NES, PS2 and the NDS. Those are my pics. If you'd say "platform" instead of "console" I'd have to go with the PC.

But out of those I mentioned the PS2 wins because of the experimental stuff. It had such a huge variety of games.

(EDIT) Oh, the Xbox 360 also has a ton of variety of games. XBLA, Indie, regular releases and the Japanese exclusives.

PS2 and DS. SNES a close third, and then Xbox 360.

How so? The library of a console is the software that's available to play on it.

No it isn't. No one says MGS1 when they make a list of great PS2 games.

PS1 games are not part of the PS2 library, they're part of the PS1 library. They are PS1 games that can be played on the PS2, not PS2 games.

Probably the Xbox 360.

The PS2 lacks any decent shooters, especially first person. It's library isn't that well rounded to be honest. Simply many, many hardcore japanese-centered type of games. That's fine if it's your thing (It is mine too, personally :D)

But on Xbox 360 you have a little of pretty much everything.

Lets not forget that classics such as the following all meet up with halo, gears, and the western juggernauts in one place: The 360.

-Resident Evil 4
-MGS3: SE
-MGS2
-Devil May cry 1,3
-Silent Hill 2, 3

etc. 360's library is the best if you're looking at the bigger picture.

DS, IMO.
From Ouendan to Radiant Historia, Super Mario 64 to Ghost Trick and the Pokémon Series to the Ace Attorney Series... it has a lot of variety. It even has Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty! I hope that the 3DS gets at least the same variety of great games to choose from, so that it succeds what the DS did. But, for starters, Nintendo must get rid of the region lock -.-

Nonetheless, I think that PS2 has tons of great games and variety, too, so it comes in close second to me.

I can pick four or five systems that have had dozens and dozens of classics. NES, SNES, Genesis, PS2, Xbox 360.

But it's hard to think of which one, to me, had the MOST classics. Or whom's classics are so good that they surpass the other systems.

I think maybe the SNES and Genesis are my answer.

And SNES probably surpasses the Genesis.

Yeah, okay SNES.

SNES, PS1, PS2 are all pretty close in my opinion. With backwards compatibility considered, the PS2 wins hands down.

For handhelds, it's the DS by far, especially when you throw in GBA compatibility.

PS2, PS1 or SNES. Pretty equal levels of greatness and variety. For handhelds it'd be PSP, GBA, DS, but that's a controversial opinion.

Choose your poison.

Between DS and SNES...

DS has loads of great little quirky games and is great for RPGs.

SNES has the best first party line-up of any console in history, most likely. And a great third party line-up too!

I spent a lot more time with my DS because I just prefer the convenience of handheld gaming and I was older when I was exposed to it. Whereas until recently, I only really played SNES when I was like 8 until I rebought one recently. I'll go with DS as my favourite but concede SNES is probably the best.

Going with PlayStation 2.

I'm still buying games for the damn thing, and it isn't out of some retro craving or nostalgia or the need for "pure/simple" game mechanics that are already so often emulated by today's indie/downloadable/app store offerings.

The library is full of legitimately "current" style gaming experiences that I've somehow managed to overlook in the avalanche of titles. I doubt I'll ever do this with another system again.

Quality of great games > Quantity of great games

Well yeah, but on a system like the PS2 you have thousands of games to pick from with hundreds of good to outstanding games so you're more likely to find a ton of games you love on it.

Just looking at the boxes on my shelves... Nintendo DS by a country mile. My game library has never been so massive before the DS.

Probably the Xbox 360.

Lol Wut.
PS2 had Half Life, Deus Ex 2, TimeSplitters, Quake 3 and No One Lives Forever

The SNES is probably my *favorite* console, but since the PS2 library technically includes every PS1 game, which in turn contains (albiet frequently shitty) ports of some of my favorite SNES games, the PS2 kind gets defaulted the win.

Then again, the PS2 has no port of the undeniably, objectively best SNES game:

PS2 library wins, even without the PS1 stuff. It's just ridiculously massive, successful, and popular.

Hahaha. maybe you want to take the state of technology at the time into account?
