My folks surprised the family with an N64, Mario64, and Starfox64 - Twas' a good Christmas.

It wasn't until I bought the Dreamcast that I really started "gaming" as my primary hobby, but I remember seeing House of the Dead 2 being played on an import DC at a Babbage's and knew right then that I had to have one. I ended up buying a DC on 9/9/99 along with NFL2K, which was a great game... Except... I hate sports games. I always have. To this day I don't know why I bought it. Perhaps I thought it would change how I would feel about the sports genre, I dunno'... I ended up getting Soul Calibur and Sonic a few weeks later to fix my mistake. =P

I'd say my favorite systems at purchase were... SNES, Dreamcast, Xbox, and the DS. Dreamcast probably wins out. The only complete disappointment was having a Gamecube with only Smash. I managed to beat the single player like within an hour of starting, I was so let down. Oh and the DSi, but that's a given.

Xbox 360 - Took me around 3 months til after I got it til I actually went out and bought a game for it, which was Halo 3: ODST. I had just been borrowing things from my friends up til that point.
PS2 - It came with a bunch of crap games (bought it used off a friend as well) which I played for awhile, until eventually I got bored and went out and bought FFX.

Have always bought consoles for the sake of having a console. Whether there was a 'bonus' of some sort was irrellevant to me.

I know it's better to wait, but I can't help myself.

The only exception is the PS3.

I waited on that one, and bought it 3 months after launch. There was a deal where I got 2 games with it, and I couldn't hold out knowing God of War 3 was coming (I figured it would be sooner).

Now wit the slim, I'm going to buy a 250GB next year when I move into my house.

Then I bought a Wii at launch: Zelda, Excite Truck, Super Monkey Ball, and Red Steel. Never finished Red Steel or Super Monkey Ball, but Zelda and Excite Truck each got tons of play time.

Then I finally picked up an Xbox 360 last year. I bought the Orange Box and Burnout Paradise to go with it.
