What do you think is the best JRPG party size?

I think it's less about party size and more about EXP distribution and switching mechanics.

FFX spoiled me with the real time switching mechanic. I love that to death. I also like anything that gives EXP to players who aren't in the party.

So a game like Suikoden II, while super awesome, sometimes frustrates the hell out of me because I have my 6 I like and then the game forces me to take an underleveled person with me. I had to grind recently and it just killed all momentum I had in that game, and I know I was just at a big story turning point too...

4 or 5 for standard JRPGs, 5 for dungeon crawlers.

3 isn't enough for meaningful party construction. The 6th character slot in the Wizardry-styled games that I've played (Class of Heroes, Operation Abyss) seems like it's only there to justify chest traps/floor traps/appraisal and is not missed in Etrian Odyssey.

Action JRPG's: 1
I'd rather just play alone with encounters and situations designed for a single character than having to deal with AI party members

Turn Based JRPG's: 4
I don't know, I just like numer. Not too small and not too big

I thought of 4, but seeing the 5 and 6 party composition looks quite good too. I think 5 might be my prefer party number though. I always preferred sticking the main protagonist right in the middle.

There tend to be more characters you can play with than there are room for, id like it if (60-80%)exp could be given to those that couldn't be played as well.

Always dislike having to relvl a weaker character just because you couldn't play them. Often time id just ignore them, because of the problems of the new areas are overlvled for them and they tend to just hold you back.

4-6. Give enough characters for interesting dialog and gameplay options, but doesn't leave you stuck with one character if you just hate them.

6 of course
