I think it's less about party size and more about EXP distribution and switching mechanics.
FFX spoiled me with the real time switching mechanic. I love that to death. I also like anything that gives EXP to players who aren't in the party.
So a game like Suikoden II, while super awesome, sometimes frustrates the hell out of me because I have my 6 I like and then the game forces me to take an underleveled person with me. I had to grind recently and it just killed all momentum I had in that game, and I know I was just at a big story turning point too...
