What does Nintendo mean to you?

Maybe I'm feeling a little nostalgic (grew up with Nintendo games) but the more older I get, the more Nintendo means to me. I more and more realise, fancy gfx don't cut it anymore for me and tbh, gfx don't excite me the way they did last gen. They get old real fast.

I was very disappointed with the games being released on PS4 and Xbox One thus far, so been looking into some 'oldies' to fullfill my personal gap. Bought some GC games last week. Odama and Twin Snakes are on the way.

The masters of remasters. Polished gameplay. Beautiful atmosphere. Sweet, sweet memories. Finishes games before shipping them.

I'm really not a fan of some hardware choices in recent generations though (motion controls/3D). Call me old fashioned I guess.

Good to very good, but expensive first-party titles.

I've owned everything except the NES, N64 (my cousin did, we played it at his place) and Wii U.

My childhood. The NES started my gaming addiction, and Nintendo kept feeding it through my life with quality, fun games.

Nintendo is games.

No matter what, for better or worse, at peak popularity and the nichest of niches, Nintendo is games to me.

No matter the resolution, 8-bit or HD, arcade, home console, handheld. Retro, modern, faux-retro. Minigames, microgames, full games. 1985, 1995, 2005, 2015. Cartridges, discs, downloads. They were there when I started, and I hope they're there when I'm done w/this hobby.

To me, Nintendo is games.

If Nintendo's debut was the Wii U and they were making the games they have now, do you think they'd struggle? People wouldn't have the "same IP" argument I'm always hearing. Still, it's limited hardware with a GamePad the general public doesn't see the point of.

Few games that appeal to me, but incredible polish on them.

Synonymous with outdated policies, terrible decisions, and in general a confusing message from different parts of the company.

Nintendo was part of my youth.

Sometimes I imagine rubbing Reggies body with some lotion and getting sticky hands from his breasthair.

Profit over my satisfaction.

Still I love playing games from Gamecube to older platforms and playing all of the portable games form Game Boy to 3DS.

They're the reason why I've been so into gaming as a hobby, and they're still the reason why I'm so into the hobby. Their high quality of standards and push for interesting game mechanics has always been consistent and most importantly, their games are just straight up fun. I played with my family growing up, and I certainly hope to play with my kids when I have them.

One of the few companies that can appeal to a dinosaur like me. I'm not even old and yet I'm always craving the style of games that were king 15 years ago, rather than the big budget AAA shooters that took over as the staples of gaming. Nintendo has me covered, even if they can be a little boneheaded at times.

Christmas.

A child trapped in a man's body.

A digital account system like a serrated blade dripping with poison slicing through my gut.

pretty much everything when it comes to gaming

last non nintnedo consoles ive owned were ps2 and xbox og, but ive owned every nintendo console since. its just the games and philosophy resonate with me like no other. the music too haha.

mario, donkey kong, wii sports, smash bros, metroid primes, the entire 3ds experience, zelda ( i just played loz 1 for the first time recently and it was one of the most amazins games and experiences ive ever had). i love their gameplay first philosophy and they will always be the best imo. pokemon too, shit, they have just made so many amazing games

even the digital stuff, im going 70 percent digital on my 3ds and its just so nice for me, i know theyre behind on internet stuff but they still make the best games so any effort on their part is appreciated

An almost-impeccable history of quality in terms of games produced, coupled with a fanbase that has members far more on the overly-rabid defence force than any other of the big names.

Nintendo frustrates me, I grew up with the NES and SNES but aside from Donkey Kong Country and Yoshis Island games on the PS1 left far more of an impact with more nostalgia even though I got it after the previous 2.

As a Wii U owner I love pikmin and mario 3d world but nintendo really frustrates me with how detatached they are from their fan base. Look at how they handle the pokemon franchise despite us begging for a 3d world we have yet to get anything like that.

What's a word for someone who has everything, and gradually throws it all away and even though people are saying "don't do that" he does it anyway and just makes things worse...

The Good: Good-to-great games, family-friendly image, trendsetter with home console controllers. Mario.

The Bad: Somewhat stubborn business decisions because money (carts on N64, mini-discs on GC), abandonment of good IP (F-Zero, Metroid, Wave Race, Eternal Darkness), family-friendly image

The Ugly:
Holds virtual monopoly on the retro scene despite the fact they weren't the only console maker before Sony joined, draconian practices on 3rd parties w/ NES/SNES, Virtual Boy, family-friendly image, too many fanboys/fangirls engaging in revisionists history

They gave a 3D world in the past two games :)

Also, this thread is the first time I've seen "family friendly image" called "ugly" lol

I always loved games on Nintendo platforms, but I never had any preference for them... I even traded away my NES with a stack of games for a Sega Master System with like 3 games... (HUGE mistake that I always regretted). But I always went for the Sega, and then Sony systems over Nintendo.

rather than the big budget AAA shooters that took over as the staples of gaming.

Kind of OT, but isn't this an outdated sentiment at this point?

AAA shooters are like what, less than 2% of the market these days? Seems like they're not even a blip on the radar outside of a couple "Mario franchises" like CoD and....I don't know, Battlefield or something?

When I think of Nintendo...

Good
  • Tons of childhood nostalgia
  • Unsurpassed quality software
  • Nintendo universe feels like the Disney of gaming
Bad
  • Frustrating business decisions
  • Horrible third party relations
Ugly
  • Virtual Boy

A company that I used to really like.

It's more that pretty much every major release these days is a shooter or involves gun combat in some way. Outside of Valve's titles, it's never appealed to me.

Does that count Bloodborne? :p

I don't think so. Destiny, Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, 1886, that Division game, etc etc. Maybe not all FPS?

a legend in gaming, the only true video game company to produce hardware. Originator of the most recognized and beloved characters in gaming. Yet, makes me scratch my head too often.

A company that keeps regurgitating the same shit ever since I was 10 years old. That's just too much of the same thing for my taste.
