What does Sony PlayStation look like without Xbox around?

Dream scenario: SEGA announces Dreamcast 2, Will be the only console to get true physical copies. Becomes niche hardware, but has full support by SEGA and third parties.

Then we wake up and see it was all a dream lol.
Dreamcast 2: 9/9/29. Imagine if they were somehow able to again land Peter Moore as the head of the brand. I would buy one and probably every launch title immediately.

My prediction is that without a real competitor, Playstation will have to expand. Xbox not being a direct competitor does not mean they cease to exist necessarily. Sony has free reign to expand into other ecosystems without the threat of customers going to another competitor. I think they will take this opportunity and try to further grow the business. This technically puts them back in some form of competition. People have coined the "Platform Wars" as that battlefield. I tend to agree. There's no way Sony is gonna just sit back and watch Xbox proliferate into these other arenas and not try to get a piece for themselves. The kicker is...they don't have any incentive to remain a console-only publisher with Xbox in the position it is right now.

Don't like Sony putting their exclusives elsewhere to make more money? What are you gonna do about it? Not a damn thing. There's no place else to go.

Post-2018 – Exclusive Content and Corporate Messaging: As Sony secured major exclusive titles and made strategic business decisions (like the controversial focus on digital sales or platform exclusivity), some fans and media outlets again described Sony as "arrogant" or overly confident.
Interesting that securing exclusive content to elevate the value of the platform that your userbase is investing in (Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Deathloop, Ghostwire exclusivities; COD, Avengers and GTA deals; early access to betas and content from third-party, etc) is seen as "arrogant" by the AI chatbot, when actually a sign of arrogance would be to believe that you don't need to invest into anything that would constitute another reason to justify the value of, in this case, a PlayStation 5.

PS6 will definitely be more expensive without real competition. I don't know that it will have any effect on their first party games, which have already been too few and far between this gen. I am secretly hoping this will mean less moneyhatting for PS5 only, as I've been moving over to PC. I do think this will help PC, and could lead to a more powerful Steambox eventually.

PlayStation 5's rumored heat issues should be solved in final console
Sources say the PlayStation 5 runs hot, but Sony should compensate with a powerful cooling solution.

New reports suggest Sony is currently wrangling PS5 overheating issues. Supposed unnamed dev sources tell reporters like Windows Central's Dan Rubino and Jez Corden that the console is simply belting out too much heat for the cooling array to handle.

UPDATE: Jason Schreier, who has close ties with developers in the games industry, says the overheating rumors aren't true.

The end of Xbox is better for the entire industry; perhaps then a new competitor will enter the market.

One that isn't based on fake news and FUD, led by a frustrated idiot with fantasies of buying Nintendo (because, according to him, Nintendo doesn't understand games, LOL) and who keeps playing the victim for being "forced" by "evil Sony" to buy a PS5 bundle* with Horizon Forbidden West.

*I bought a PS5 in Brazil during the pre-sale without a bundle, and Spencer the Clown in the US is earning 100,000x more in dollars than me. Can't he?

What's the price of the PS6? Is it the same as what MS is charging now for the Xbox SX?

It'll definitely be less than $800.

In USD? Who knows, probably less than $800 if released in 2027. I just think they will be less likely to subsidize losses on hardware for as long as they would if they had a legitimate competitor. I also think that not having a legitimate competitor may cause them to extend the release to 2028 or later. No reason to put out hardware as often if you don't have a competitor releasing hardware.

I have a feeling we'll see a PS6 in 2028 or later if Xbox exits this gen. That wouldn't be a bad thing, since we have the PS5 Pro now.

Heck, even if Xbox does release a next gen console first, it doesn't seem like it'll affect Sony that much by releasing one later.

People forget about price elasticity of demand.
Things won't change too much, because console buyers have an upper limit they're willing to spend on consoles. They can't exceed this, lest they kill their own golden goose for no reason.

  • Does anyone else step up in the console space? If so, who and how?
I think the high end competition, in the living room, may end up being PCs outfitted with a Gaming Linux that runs mostly Steam games.

I'm not sure how sony will behave, they already are sucking us dry with the prices on the PSN (which, unfortunately, Microsort doesn't offer a real solution to).

Hopefully they keep their studios, but even those, the output has been pretty low this gen.

That is the one thing I am expecting. There was no benefit to anyone, least of all Sony, to release PS6 any time soon. They need to make another round of 1st party games and launching them before PS6 is even brought up.

In the driving seat of what? Modern PS consoles are 99% AMD inventions.

No man, the coprocessors as Tempest and Kraken, the architecture of the IO system, the extra instructions and layers in the SSD, even the way it handles power to balance out GPU and CPU are totally unique features of the PS5, and implemented by Cerny.

Proof is, those aren't in Xbox Series, and it's also an AMD design.

I think not. Switch 2 and even steam and PC are a big competition. Even mobile phones like Iphone. Sony will still target a competitive price for ps6 and psp2.

We've been here before, it'll be fine…

I hope the Steam Machines will be a new competitor:

- Nintendo Switch
- Sony PlayStation
- Steam Machines

This way, I think there will be a much more thriving and interesting market for us.

Branded Steam boxes will fill the void. Especially if they keep to ~500/600, some how.

But they confirmed new hardware so guess we'll see. Both brands are a bit shit to me these days anyway.

Well, that's the 1%.

Those worried about the "competition" or Sony being left alone (it will NOT be) without Xbox must be joking, Xbox is the brand that has a 5 year old console at $650-$800, the one that just released a $1000 portable console with Asus, the one that has the GP at $360 (more than double that of Sony's premium plus), the one that raised the price of games in May, etc... don't worry, Sony is not going to beat those prices.

Sony has already shown us how they will react. Increased prices justified by fluff language for the same or worse service.

The online tax, i mean PS+, says hi.

Even if MS were to drop out of the picture, whether or not we recognize Switch 2 as a competitor to PS, the brands are still competing against each other in store aisles. Parents don't really get this shit generally. Some parent shopping for a system for their kids for the holidays is just gonna see Nintendo vs Sony and a price without understanding the underlying tech. That's the way it's always been. Those of us that understand the tech in the boxes are a drop in the bucket vs the general population.

Parents who probably grew up with gaming in the 90s before dropping out are more likely going to recognise Nintendo and PlayStation than the green Xbox brand.

They'll recognise Mario and Donkey Kong or Spider-man and Gran Turismo, but not Starfield or Avowed.

Gaming was still pretty niche through the early 90s, it was still gaining traction. If you were a gaming kid in the first half of the 90s, everything was a Nintendo to our parents. Nintendo had to create PSAs to not call other consoles Nintendo. That was before the PSX took over. Most of us 90s kids also remember how shitty MS was pre Xbox. Sony has been a big name since the 80s with Walkman and CD and everything else. Both brands have a much better reputation than MS who has a reputation for monopolistic practices.

The hardware industry will be fine if MS leaves, if anything it just leaves room for someone else to come in.

Without any competition from Xbox, they'll probably innovate less and become more complacent knowing they can do whatever they want. And probably raises prices on all their services, just cause they can. Competition is always a good thing.

The arrogance will go to their heads...it'll be more stuff like thinking people want to go see a concert of incredibly forgettable music that accompanies their games...or that people want a Magic The Gathering card of Aloy.

Another player has to enter the market (like Sony did with the OG PlayStation) to shake things up. That would be the ideal scenario, but who's willing to do it?

Apple won't sell hardware at a loss

Valve don't make enough games and SteamDeck only managed 5m

No Chinese company can combine hardware, platform and games.

I just don't see anyone, too much risk.

I think we will see fewer single player games that showcase the console and more live service games overall

What about Elon Musk? He seems to be the only one that's crazy enough to do it.

He's never been bothered about getting into established markets.
That's true. I just saw the thread about him wanting to make an AI game. He's a disruptor.

I also don't see anyone wanting to take the risk. Apple would've done it years ago, but they definitely don't want to lose money.

Now that everyone has a smart TV Apple COULD just put an M series chip in the next Apple TV and market it as a AAA gaming device and see what the feedback is.

Won't amount to much I imagine

What are you going on about? Playstation has always been better and always will be. All Xbox ever had going for it was Halo and they can't even do that right anymore.

We won't be paying to play online and Sony won't be releasing their games on PC.
Online for paid games will finally be free? I hope so, but I'm afraid that Sony being left alone are going to ramp up the prices PS+.

If Sony reps reads this I just want them to know: Now it's time to add free online gaming for [Bloodborne] paid games

I'm not sure if prices would go up, but I could see them removing games and features from each tier.

My guess on price is $699USD without a disc drive, like the Pro and the Pro will get a perm price drop before 2027 holiday to justify this price point.

It's either that or $799USD but then Playstation will include the drive. Maybe. They gotta really show what games will utilize the hardware out of the gate in order to justify a reason to get it at launch. Otherwise it's just a rinse and repeat where cross-gen is more of a thing in tandem with a lack of true next-gen games.

I've got a feeling we'll see a $599-699 base model PS6.

So hard to tell what the economy will be like by that time, but let's hope they keep it around there!
