• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

what framerate is "playable" to you?

What is the framerate in Deus Ex PS2 port? I can play it just fine atm.

How about MGS 3D on 3DS? Again, no problem, even though I can notice some framerate drops when you fire a gun etc.

I have played GTA V for 60 hours and haven't noticed any framerate drops.

But all in all, I think around 25 is completely playable, maybe even 20 in some cases.

I tend to give up if it dips below about 25. Though, if it maintains a smooth rate, I can get used to anything 20+.

25 fps is the lowest I'll go without mentioning it. Not unplayable, but I will make note of dips below 25 fps. However, after trying out DMC 4 on my old laptop and seeing what a fast paced hack n' slash is at 15 to 20 fps... I'll say that some genres are unplayable below 30 fps.

30 fps minimum without dips, with dips just destroys the experience for me
Played on PC for a long time now without any console time so 60 is very nice and does matter to me and basically required on PC. (I will deal with 30 on consoles though)

Well tbh if its console game Im willing to make some concessions...I played through SotC on PS2 and it was one of my favorite games ever....fps doesnt bug me when there is nothing I can do about it, but on PC its AMAZINGLY frustrating trying to squeeze out every last frame tweaking settings and there is always this little voice in the back of my head "y'know you could probably optimize it further"....one of the reasons im not a huge fan of PC gaming

So you're not a "fan of PC gaming" because your personal hardware isn't as strong as you'd like it to be?

Have you played fps and racers running on 60 fps?

Only CoD and the NFS games. I was actually playing NFS:MW last week (free from PS+ a few months ago) and I distinctly remember thinking "60fps is supposed to make a difference?". Definitely not as good as Motorstorm: Apocalypse.

Edit: And the Bulletstorm demo on PC.

I played through The Witcher 2 on my busted ass laptop which constantly overheats and was roughly around the range of 5-25 fps. Probably averaged between 10-15fps, do not ever want to do that again but the heart wants what the heart wants and I really wanted to play The Witcher 2.

The old MW or the new MW?

30 fps was never a "fucking slideshow" for me, but once I got used to 60 fps for shooters, I can never go back.

I don't give a shit about framerate, mainly because I don't play non-2D games on PC.
If I like a game, I'll play it. Part of the reason I don't want to be a PC gamer so I don't have to worry about it and shadows, AA, and all that stuff.

Low framerates don't bother me so much. I mean, don't get me wrong I like my games as stable as possible but in the console world that doesn't happen a lot of the time.

Hard stuttering bothers me the most. Like, if the game just freaking stops (0 fps ho!).

It depends on the genre.

30+ for racing. Forza Horizon recently proves that there can be a great game locked on 30.

25+ for everything else. I've been playing a lot of GTA, which hover around that on the 360, and have no problem.

It was Modern Warfare 2, so the new ones I guess.

I guess it's different for me - I value gameplay over framerate. Playing NFS:MW for so many hours didn't made me think that it was better than Apocalypse. In fact, I disliked MW only a little less than Burnout Paradise.

A ton of good games on the N64 had bad framerate issues and were perfectly playable.

60 is a nice ideal and preferred, but 30 (even with dips) is fine for a good game. Deal with it, imo.

Playable? 30, preferable? 60!
Anything bellow 28 is a slide show for me.
I'm with this opinion here. I would love if more games were 60fps more often but a steady 30 can be great. But it has to be a steady 30fps with dips here and there to 28fps to really enjoy the game. Once it starts getting into 25fps territory things start to feel bad.

Anyone naming Motorstorm clearly has no idea what the relationship between framerate and racing gameplay are. That kind of racer was never meant for precise control judgements, same for NFS MW.

60fps or bust for PC games, don't really care for console except for really low framerate like Dragon's Dogma. Never bought the game because of the framerate in the ps3 demo.

I prefer 60 fps when it comes to PC gaming just because I have a higher expectation for performances based on the hardware, on the other hand my expectations for console gaming are lower, so having a lower FPS is to be expected considering the hardware.

Anything between Sonic '06 and 60fps. I'm not picky.

I only find severe frame drops like in Sonic okay because they add to how hilariously bad the experience is.

Lol you mistake me, I was asking about NFS:MW, not CoD.

Edit: Framerate is part of the gameplay experience yo. I'm no graphics whore, I'll make necessary compromise to reach 60 if I need to.

Yep you are completely right, I am jealous of those with better of hardware and my inadequacies come out in my postings. My nights and days are spent wishing that I had better hardware that I cant afford. If only I could have your glorious PC, then all of my problems with performance would disappear and I would never have any issues with PC gaming ever again.

On console... I can probably play through anything after experiencing the N64/PS1 era. :P

On PC, it depends on the genre. For games where timing and reaction don't matter, especially singleplayer ones, I'll drop as low as a locked 30 if that means I can crank up graphics settings more. 60 for fast-paced action games. 120 for multiplayer games like shooters and such.

10?

What does that make Banjo-Tooie, like 5?

It would depend on the game. I just played Wind Waker HD and I gotta say that is quite playable (and downright beautiful). So 30 I guess.
