The earliest and best example I can think of is Star Ocean 3, with it's 300 battle trophies. There must be something before that though...anyone know what it might be?

edit: using urk's description of achievements, since it's exactly what I'm thinking of.

Achievements: "A defined list of in-game accomplishments that are tracked and trigger visual cues or "rewards" upon completion."

A high score table to me is an "achievement" although I assume you are talking about some part of the game where it tangibly rewards you for completing certain tasks and records it.

Really though, probably the first game that had a scoring mechanism was the first game to do achievements in the purest sense of the word.

It was definitely better than getting an arbitrary number that means nothing but to rub your epeen. Achievements definitely need something tangible to be rewarding. Right now, World of Warcraft achievements are a prime examples of what achievement systems should be.

No, I'm looking for something closer to what achievements are today. Have a list of goals, related to completion or gameplay niches. It's more of the point where it evolved beyond the high-score arcade unlockables.

Secrets just don't qualify.

Well we should blame the devs for that. Mass Effect has some of the best achievements on the 360, as most of them reward you with stats boosts, not only for your current playthrough, but for any new game you start. They also allow you to pick a extra ability for any new created class/character.

Did it even tell you what the achievements were though? I thought you had to look up a cheat FAQ to know what the hell to do to unlock the cheats.

I believe (and please correct me if you're going to go back and play the game) that when you beat a mission and haven't gotten the special objectives, they will list them in that mission after you beaten it once. It's been a while, but that's what I remember.

Okay, so we have Spyro 2 and Goldeneye as 64/PS games with achievements. Last gen, SSBM seems like it was the first to make achievements closer to what they are today (well, more, since they actually give unlockables). Star Ocean 3 probably has the most in-depth achievement system last gen.

i guess in a way, though not really the same, RPG's sort of have achievements with the whole level'ing up and skill tree stuff.

mortal kombat had fatalities which are sort of like an achievement.

They are old as hell if you want to coun't things like Getting all pokemon or Trophies in Smash Bros. But achievements in the purest sense to me sounds like the Star Ocean example someone else gave. That being said really the fact that all games have them and they go into an overall pool of points on the 360 (and PS3 now for the most part) makes them a hell of a lot different then any single game that came before.

I think if we're talking capital a "Achievements," then you need to define it a bit. Something like: "A defined list of in-game accomplishments that are tracked and trigger visual cues or "rewards" upon completion." Otherwise it might as well be "Defeated older brother in a game of Pong."

I'll go ahead and use your description then, since it's exactly what I'm thinking of.

Stuff like "getting 151 pokemon" are not achievements, those are player set goals. They are achievements in the literal sense, but not achievements in the sense that we now know them in gaming.

I'm sure it's been done before this, but Vagrant Story had titles based on sometimes insane accomplishments, such as beating the entire game without saving, not using a single item, not using a single spell, as well as lesser ones like killing x amount of enemies, defeating certain bosses, using certain weapon types x amount of times, etc..
