What genre should the Pokemon brand apply itself next?

Open-world ARPG.

Imagine Dragon's Dogma, Monster Hunter or Dragon Age: Inquisition, but with Pokémon and structured like a Mystery Dungeon game or Pokémon Colosseum/XD. It should include a somewhat comprehensive, but closed, set of characters you can use to form your party of 4. They should represent different variations on the common RPG/Pokémon archetypical roles (a tanky physical attacker, a quick in-and-out rogue, a magic user, etc.). Your characters can evolve and learn different moves just like in the games, but the combat and movement would be in real time. And it may even have a proper equipment system (i.e. not just one held item per 'mon, but at least three or four different items that affect different stats).

Disclaimer: I don't want a proper, turn-based, classic Pokémon game on Wii U. That format is best suited for handheld devices, while something more "active" fits better for a console.

I'm laughing at the image of Pokemon yelling "Arisen!"

I want a X-men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance style action RPG. But with Pokémon.

A Sim City sets in Pokémon universe would be cool too. Build Pokémon centers, gyms, dept stores...

I was kinda hoping for it, Pikachu did become a mascot

Murder Mystery/Detective Noir.

Sounds really nice.

With Nintendo patenting gba emulation I think something a mobile Pokemon rpg combined with geocaching would be fun. Like that google april fools, but better.
I would always start thinking about pokemon while camping and imagine what new Pokemon I would find there as opposed to at home or in the city.

Nintendo wasn't patenting GBA emulation. They just updated a patent filed in 2003 and granted in 2012 in order to have a legal way to stop people from doing it.

You hit it at the end OP, I've wanted a Monster Rancher (2 on the PSONE is my favorite) style Pokemon game for almost a decade. They sort of kind of erred torwards it in X and Y with the Amii stuff, feeding them a treat and doing some side mini games but I want a full fledged farm or ranch where I raise individual pokemon then take them out on an adventure. I could see it working where there's the rancher game then you transfer pokemon from it to a mainline game where you then use them as normal. Would make taking care of your team so much more personal and rewarding.

They didn't patent GBA emulation and can't use this as a way to stop people doing it. It's a patent used to protect innovation. Here Nintendo is claiming techniques to "optimisation" of emulation that are innovative and deserve patent protection.

[0017] The present invention solves these and other problems by providing a unique software emulator capable of providing acceptable speed performance and good image and sound quality on even a low-capability target platform such as a seat back display for example.

Pokémon really wouldn't work as an MMO.

Not this again.

If by what you're saying you actually mean "Pokemon as the exact same game as the handhelds changed into an MMO would not work."

If they can make Pokemon a typing game, they can make it into an MMORPG.

Crime scene mysteries. You know that would be hilarious.
Like a Voltorb was murdered and it's body outline at the crime scene would be just a circle.

If friggen Megaman can get a soccer game, I can't see why Pokemon can't

Bonus points if it allows Pokemon to knock each other out with crazy moves, Mario Strikers style

I would love Pokemon to just rip off Mega Man Soccer, beat a team of Lucario and you could recruit one to your side, etc.

3D Action/Adventure game for WiiU. Pokepark did this in a very limited way from the videos I've seen.

2D Platformer for 3DS with playable Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur. I haven't played their Genesis game, but Gamefreak showed they can do sidescrollers justice with Drill Dozer.

You know, I always wonder if fans of a specific mon get annoyed/frustrated when they get ignored in representation of a spin-off. I guess NFE mon fans get annoyed too but have a reprieve that their line is represented, at least.

I think it would be very well suited to being a MOBA. Unless its on the PC I don't think I'd really want to play it though, so it'll never happen.

I'm still shocked they haven't just made a Pokemon centered around figures, like Amiibos. They should have been the first Skylanders. Gotta buy them all!

Whichever genre would actually make it have a good/memorable story for once.
If one of the games actually had a good story then I probably can't remember it..
which is why I said memorable.

If you leave it up to Nintendo and Game Freak, they can go for 20 more years making and remaking the same games in the same vein.

And it's a shame because the brand is unbelievably strong and if they ever decided to transfer it to a Nintendo home console as a fully-fledged 3D game with a few MMO aspects (if not a complete MMO experience), they would drown in money.

Even a gritty reboot would be nice.

So...OP lists like 10 genres it's been in and you...say that?

Whether a few of the games were mediocre or not, you can't say they didn't branch out. It's probably the most branched out franchise ever besides Mario. FF is decently branched out as well.
