Sony really made gaming cool, and I think it was the PS2 we can thank for that. The PS2 era had wonderful wonderful marketing. It was this edgy "The Third Place" type surreal dream world stuff that didn't even show the machine. The PS2 logo was super cool and original and had this awesome teal-blue gradient. It was an awesomely marketed machine. It played DVDs which was such a big step up from VHS. It felt so so sharp.

I believe the attach game:console ratio for PS1 was a lot lower than N64. PS1 had something like 1:1, while N64 was 4:1 (4 games per console on average). And I think that makes sense. Fewer N64s were sold, but people who had N64 were really into it. Many people in my school who had PS1 mostly played demos and pirated games.

Ill have to intervene right there and state that Kagey and FGC aren't alike. FGC made his popular threads after his actual opinion was loopsided. Kagey K has not pushed that card so hard and has only made this rather strange thread.
It might be that you aren't that active to know this or simply don't care considering, but it is something to take into account imo.
I am not going to judge for you, but in general, if someone makes such an out of the blue thread, i am more tempted to ask what is going on rather than calling him a snowflake, imply he is unhinged, and suggest his mental level is significantly below yours and mines.

Not their job. That's your job as part of the community. Their job is to makes games, hardware to play them on, and networks to connect them together.
What? If you don't like Sony's rules, choose another platform holder. You might consider Microsoft or Nintendo, or dumping console completely for PC.

The real answer is that the Playstation was the first console successfully marketed towards young adults, as opposed to kids/teens. Considering how dominant Nintendo/Sega were at the time it made sense that they parlayed the "grown up" appeal of the Sony brand, into making Ridge Racer/Tekken/WipeOut etc. the sort of thing that was a legitimately cool thing to play before/after a night clubbing.

I have one I would give Sony. Compared with their main competitor over the generations, they have really funded and invested in story-driven games. Nintendo is really light on stories. Without Sony, we would still have games that are story-driven, but we wouldn't have as many of them.
I think this is probably the only one I can legitimately give them, by the way. They've attempted some innovations over the years, but which ones have actually stuck? Sony, for their part, seems good at building affordable, attractive electronics packages (ie. PS1, PS2, PSVR). It's not like they invented the modern analog stick with any of these, though.

On other hand, if Sony, or any company, dont keep customers happy and are not competitive they will perish.
The question that OP asked may as well be asked for any other company. The fact that a lot of people love Sony, as mentioned by OP, means that Sony must be doing something right. Even if it is regarded as "advance gaming" or "staying true to old values".
A more interesting question would be what have other companies, like Sega, Atari or NeoGeo not done right and as a result are regarded as failures.
