"What have you done to my game?!?"

Burnout Revenge - Traffic checking. It just seems cheap, never got it.

Same with me. I remember actively avoiding traffic, then hitting a car, thinking I'm about crash, then the car bounces off of my car like a newspaper. It really cut down on the tension of the races.

One recent example I can think of that didn't ruin the game, but it did result in a double-take was Mass Effect 2. I avoided almost all coverage of the game, and on an early mission when I got a new weapon, I was ready to pause and check my nventory to compare stats with my existing gun. Yeah....not so much. :lol

Ok, let's take a look at Mass Effect 2:

- Improves the shooting. That's good.

- Divides game into distinct missions, each with a "Mission Complete" screen at the end. Each mission area is also locked off, so you cannot return once a mission is finished. The net result is you lose a sense of world immersion that you had in Mass Effect 1. The whole effect is to make it feel more "game-y".

- For the record, I'd also argue that changing loading from the in-universe elevators to distinct loading screens helps reinforce this shift from trying to create a cohesive world to making an action-packed game.

- Universal cooldown; Removes the need to constantly pause battle to select different powers while also removing a lot of the non-gun strategy of the game. You're no longer thinking about how to combine a multitude of powers to neutralize enemies, but how best to flank them.

- Loss of the Mako. This is one that I doubt many people would agree with me on, but I felt that having the ability to go down to at least one planet in every system did a great job to make the universe feel expansive. And while the bases you'd encounter would be terribly generic, at least the environments would be different and expansive. Instead, it's replaced by mineral scanning, in which planets feel reduced to rows in a spreadsheet.

- Loss of ability to equip party members with armor. I know that this was done to allow the art team more leeway in designing the characters, but it further serves to separate them from me and make them feel less like my team. It also hurts the immersion aspect, when you see Shepard and Archangel go to areas fully suited up with a full helmet while Subject Zero is wearing practically nothing and only has a simple breather mask.

Basically, IMO, Bioware made a series of design decisions to tighten the gameplay at the expense of a feeling of a cohesive world and inviting universe, the net result is that I feel a lot more removed from the whole experience. It doesn't help that the narrative structure, for the most part, is unconnected to the larger story of the trilogy, and the nature of the endgame means that it's likely that most of it won't matter in the long term.

So, yes, I'd like ME3 to be more of an RPG, but what I want even more is to not be pulled out of the experience every 15 minutes or so.

Seriously Squaresoft, WTF?

Slightly changed, but this is what I think.FFXII is awesome, haven't played FFXIII now.But FFX is the worst RPG I played, although it was still ok,just far away from great.

Haha are you serious? Chapter 11 is one of the very few high points in that game for me. WTF!

Also I will pick FFXIII as well. And not just for the lack of towns but the absence of EXPLORATION in any sense at all.

Metroid Other M

No exploration, completely linear, awful and intrusive story, boring level design, poor controls, stupid design decisions like the pixel hunt bits, and a mediocre combat system that gets old halfway through yet is the main focus of the game.

Pretty much everything about the game made me scream this thread's title.

If FFX is the worst RPG you've played, then consider yourself lucky. There's plenty of shit out there. But I do agree with you on FFXII. The game is fucking great. And, do yourself a favor. Don't play FFXIII. Save yourself from being immersed in piss. That's what the game is. Piss.

Uncharted 2 Multiplayer

The fucking skins. The game game was balanced around that you could hear the enemies walk, the enemies would scream when you threw a grenade at them.

And then the skins came. No sound when they walked or ran. They didn't say anything.

And that's just the gameplay. Many of the skins are not recognizable as being either good or bad.

Guy in hawaii-shirt used to be good, now there is another guy in a hawaii-shirt that is evil.
Too much of some things is just bad. There is a reason Team Fortress 2 uses red and blue for their teams.

Might be a small complaint as the Singleplayer was fantastic and the multiplayer beta was great as well... It's just that I feel like they really did a disservice to the game by being so sloppy with the skins.

Also: Bad Company 2 and the 25% damage reduction 2 months after launch. Why have 2 betas on PS3 if you're going to make such a major change so long after launch?

What a crock load of shit it was.

Splinter Cell Conviction. Fuck you Ubi Soft, Fuck you

I don't get the GTA IV hate, San Andreas was the third installment on the old engine so it was pretty normal that it had so much features. GTA IV compared to GTA3 is a much better experience, nostalgia aside.

There were always silent skins in the game (Marco polo and Ghengis Kahn) they just added tons and tons more. I agree that they were annoying and had no place in the game though.

I have to disagree with the team color thing though. Teammates always had a big green arrow and their PSN name over their heads so it's fairly easy to differentiate between allies and foes. Not only that, but if you'd played the single player it was easy to tell by voice alone who was good and who was bad (for example, all of the female characters are on the heroes side. Lazarevich and all of the other Russian sounding people were on the villains side.

Of course, this became harder when they added the silent skins and the Playstation Heroes which some people probably weren't familiar with at all. Anyone who'd never played Resistance would think Hale was a villain from the way he dressed, for example.

SOCOM 3:
- Adding Vehicles.
- Making maps enormous.
- Attachments.
- Unstealthy single player unless it was forced.
- Update system.

Having said all of that, the vehicles were actually pretty fun on the game mode: Convoy. One of the best multiplayer experiences I have ever had. The strategy involved into stopping the convoy or pushing it through the ambush was absolutely spectacular. I still think my clan website has the 15 different convoy strategies for each map.

The community functions were also one of the best in a game. There were boards, Socom Mail, a functional clan ladder system, and a great create a clan feature.

I didn't know those two were part of the original game and not a post-release patch.

It used to be that those were only displayed if you got closer to a different player though.
So if you looked across the map you would have to know the skins.
Which I think was easy when both teams only had 6-8 different ones.
Now for a casual Uncharted 2 multiplayer guy it's just ridiculous.
Cole McGrath Blue stripes vs. Cole McGrath Red stripes
Skeleton with a metal hat vs. Skeleton with a red hat and red eyes.
Old Hawaii-shirt guy with brownish hair vs. Old Hawaii-shirt guy with grey hair and white shirt.

Not only that, but if you'd played the single player it was easy to tell by voice alone who was good and who was bad
Agreed. My main point are the silent skins and the ones that have no place in the fiction.

Burnout (franchise): removed Crash mode. New consoles have better physics and could do even more insane crash junctions, but instead they just removed it entirely.

Yeah, actually I think you do. :p

I think a lot of the changes they did with Battlenet 2.0 in SC2 are pretty bad. They are slowly improving on it now, thank God.

It will end with another rant how they fucked up the franchise and turned the most fun game in an average TPS and I think we've seen enough of these already so nah, I won't say another word.

Especially after I kinda made my peace with it after replaying it with a friend.

Fable 3 -

You had a nice workable system for interacting with other people that had been developed over the course of the first two Fable games. You just ran around, got near some people, and hit an expression. It was quick and got the job done, nevermind that it didn't really make any sense that you could make an entire town love you in a few minutes just by flexing a lot.

In Fable 3, you remove that system entirely and require you to start off interacting with someone by targeting them, hitting A, WAITING FOR A SEVERAL SECOND FADE TO BLACK, and then picking one of 3 interactions, and repeating them. You had to do this for every single person you wanted to be friends with, instead of just getting a big group all at once. So terrible.

And another thing, in Fable 2 the property buying portion was great. You buy the houses, you get money, you don't have to worry about them. And you even get a portion of your income when your console is off. Isn't that great?

In Fable 3, you buy houses and they give you income. You can even buy them from an overhead map to speed things up. Sounds great, doesn't it? Too bad houses have to be repaired fairly often, manually, one at a time from that same map, if you want them to actually give you money. And too bad the only way to get income for a long period of time is to leave your console on.

This would all be alright if an extremely major quest in the game did not revolve around making a relatively absurd amount of money to get the best outcome. But it does, so start grinding that Blacksmithing job or leave your console for hours on end.

God damn it.

Splinter Cell Conviction I still don't understand why they didn't simply start with another franchise. The stealth genre pretty much only had splinter cell as far as I can recall the past few years, other than the Thief reboot there's nothing purists of the genre look forward to. People defended it saying SC needed change. Change to what? Conviction was one of the most generic, lamest stop and pop shooters I've ever played in a market that is full of them. They ruined one of my favorite franchises, and the spies vs mercenaries online was truly unique and I wish they kept it.

Bad Company 1/2 I expect to get flak for this because for a lot of people this series looks like the savior of online shooters next to MW2. I just can't play it frankly, it's inferior to BF2/1942 in every way save for destruction. The maps are small and narrow, the classes suck, the gunplay manages to somehow be worse than BF2. The game is dumbed down in size and scope, and what's left is a shell of what Battlefield should be. Playing it, the classic BF moments just don't happen and I hate it for delaying BF3 by just a day. Worst of all, because of this series' success, BF3 is multiplatform now and will likely be horribly gimped on the PC.

Tomb Raider Legend and subsequent sequels- Tomb Raider was NOT an action game, it was action ADVENTURE. Say it with me "ADVENTURE", and what did you guys do? Added fighting mechanics, started focusing on gunplay, added all of the assists to make the game easier, and left the whole premise of Tomb Raider behind. I never felt the sense of isolation anymore, the puzzle layering, and then there were the team mates bugging you on the radio; it all just felt like a linear experience going from point A to B while shooting a bunch of dudes on the way. Granted, the grappling hook was a nice gimmick and the graphics weren't bad, but that's all the positives I could list.

Also, QTEs in Tomb Raider Anniversary...thanks for that...ugh.

Mortal Kombat 3 (and beyond)...Shitty combo mechanic and goofy characters and fatalities.

Metal Gear Solid 3...Enemies spot and shoot from off screen making it impossible to stealth. No radar.

This is significantly less of a problem if you play the Subsistence version of 3. Because it has a camera that actually functions.

The original version of 3 is nigh unplayable.

I agree 100%, but you're going get a whole bunch of people screaming about how you're a PC elitist. It happens to me now matter how calmly I explain why I like BF2 more.

For my series? Every Star Fox game after 64 has been a disaster. Thank goodness Nintendo's starting over by remaking SF64 for 3DS. This series has just gone down the gutter and the only people who still enjoy the games are creepy furries.

Every FF after X (and X-2).

This.

FF XII was a real-time/ATB mix that needed scripts (gambits) for combat to run more smoothly.

FF XIII was so lightning fast that they needed to design combat to control only one character.

IÂ’ll take my turn-based or slower ATB combat systems again, thank you.

I hear the VC version is the one to get. I suppose I could rephrase and say I want my Zeldas 2D again (with a normal control scheme, thx).

The Gamecube version (in Zelda Collector's Edition) is the worst because it has an emulation glitch in MM where it can erase your entire memory card. So I'd recommend the VC version.

Prince of Persia Warrior Within

Zelda Windwaker

Mario Sunshine
"Well so much for fun platforming. Think I'll just use hover with FLUDD instead."

Every Mario Kart since 64
"Dude, these battle stages suck. I miss block fort, and double deck, because there you got to drive, dodge, hide and shoot without worrying about a god damned pit every 2 seconds."

Every wrestling game since Wrestlemania 2000 and No mercy
"This. Is. Shit. My main tactic to even hit a grapple is to punch someone or do a running attack every 2 seconds. Why am I being punished for trying to wrestle in a wrestling game?!"

I don't care if you call it an "escort" title, Namco. Doesn't mean you have to place utterly nonsensical restrictions on everything and force in some half-assed Pokemon shit.

Mass Effect 2

- No loot.
- No interchangeable mods/upgrades for weapons and armor.
- Turning ammo mods into character-specific skills.
- Can't use the fun biotics until you strip shields.
- Can't crouch anymore for better accuracy.
- Having to reload with thermal clips instead of weapon cooldown.
- Shepard's skills being drastically cut back; weapon skills, persuasion, hacking, etc...
- Party members being reduced to four measly skill upgrades.
- Not being able to equip party members, and alternate outfits largely suck.
- Removed walking on/off the Normandy, for what reason I can't possibly imagine.
- Can't change armor while not on the Normandy, yet you come across weapon lockers in the middle of a mission that magically have all your weapons in them.
- Addition of the little cartoony Normandy you fly around. This isn't Sid Meier's Space Pirates!
- The game loses much of the sleek, elegant sci-fi feel of the first game.
- Mining. Unfortunately the idiots who designed it think it's awesome so it's coming back for the next game.
- Every mission environment is reduced to simple corridor shooter with nothing to explore.
- Mission wrap-up makes it feel even more like disconnected shooter levels instead of an immersive world.
- Not being able to level up while on a mission.
- Upgrades are placed directly along the path, so players could not possibly miss them.
- What we see of the Citadel is reduced to a few floors of a shopping mall.
- Nonsensical plot devices in an overall shitty story.
- Entire game is nothing more than a sidequest. Not a single thing happens to further the overarching narrative set up in Mass Effect.
- This was supposed to be a "darker" chapter?

Just thinking about it makes me rage. Thanks for getting my blood pressure up, OP.

He also took out the ability to charge arrows which I loved against bosses in NG2. The arrows became worthless pea shooters in Sigma 2.

But, at the same time he added the ability to walk and shoot the arrows.:lol

If only we could have both in Ninja Gaiden 3. (charge arrows along with the ability to walk and shoot them too):D

It's also nice to be able to jump and fire them while in the air.

I hope that he steals the idea of being able to roll while the sword is charged like Bayonetta did to improve upon it also.

Really disappointing after San Andreas.
Not a bad game by any means, but I wish they would've kept the "realism" far away.
The ironic thing is they were talking up the "realism" of the story in San Andreas.

John Singleton, etc., etc. making it more grounded. Then what we got was Area 51, Woozy, and jetpacks.
Toning down it a little was needed, but they went so far to the other side of the spectrum it was ridiculous.

Save your "storytelling" for other franchises Rockstar, I want good, over-the-top gangster fun.

Onimusha 3 takes place in modern day France and co-stars Jean Reno as a playable character. Also, delight to the antics of this retarded Mothra fairy that gives you orders!

Granted I really liked the game from a pure gameplay standpoint, but what the fuck at whoever took the story in that direction.

Tally up another vote for traffic checking in Burnout Revenge. Talk about invalidating the entire core gameplay that made Burnout 2 and 3 great. The series went from risk-reward gameplay to "hold down the boost button and plow through traffic without consequence."

Also, Devil May Cry 2: everything about it. They managed to shit on EVERYTHING that was great about the first game. Anyone who's played it needs no further elaboration.

I like the "defense" attribute, the battles in general are better... but...

-No citadel, no special companions, no mounts, less special armor, one magic less (I know you can have two action items, but it is not the same) and I feel it too darky (personal opinion)

Street Fighter 3
Ryu, Ken... who the hell are those other guys? Why is an American the main character? Why the last boss has such an ugly design? (I'm not criticizing the game's quality, just those were my first impressions)

The first thing that I think of is Devil May Cry ==> DMC2.

I loved that Dante would shoot with his pistols as fast as you could tap the button. The second went for a predetermined "fast shooting speed"

:/

I never played much of a Devil May Cry since a few levels into 2. It was literally the one aspect I found to be the most fun about the original.
