What if The Force Awakens sucks?

I mean, no matter what it's going to be divisive, because us geeks gonna geek.

I think it's safe to say it's gonna be a fun ride though.

Disney bought SW for $4 Billion, they can't afford to gamble with a half-assed effort. I truly believe they put the best minds available on this task. The formation of the Story Team was a good sign of this.

I'm not convinced of just HOW good it will be. However I'm be willing to bet that, once the dust settles, out of the (now) 7 films it will be in my top 4. That's all I'm hoping for. So you can see, I'm keeping expectations fairly muted. :P

If it climbs higher i'll be elated.

I'm pretty sure it won't, but I'm also not expecting it to be the second coming of the Christ like others seem to. I just want to have a good time with a fun, well made action movie with some likable characters.

If it really sucks I'll just slowly forget about it like I did with the prequels.
The original trilogy exist, they're fantastic films, nothing will change that. Everything else is just a bonus.

I hope it's crap, because the meltdowns would surely be much more glorious and entertaining than a "yeah that movie was pretty good".

It's not going to "suck" like the prequels did.

It will be like jurassic world: it will make a metric shitload of money, general audiences will love the spectacle, but it will have the staying power of a wet fart to anyone that is looking for legitimately good movie.

That photo made me hit up the Google Image Search.

JJ Abrams, 2013, shortly after agreeing to take the job as director of Episode VII

JJ Abrams, 2015, yesterday:

This movie seems to be taking it out of him a li'l bit.

J J Abrams already ruined Star Trek so I wouldn't be surprised

You see, this is hyperbolic extreme talk and verbiage that's just going to seep into all conversations about SW for the next month regardless of how the movie is.

Star Trek. A 49 year old franchise that hadnt been touched on TV for a few years and whose last movie entries were not great at all. Trek '09 scored higher overall reviews, raked in nearly seven times as much box office wise than Nemesis and managed to capture a sense of fun whilst generally being respectful to the material.

Into Darkness wasnt great but Abrams has been on record numerous times about the issues and semi regrets he had about that. He was earnest and stepping into such a historic franchise invariably would be a delicate balancing act.

Whether you think they are good or bad movies, 'Ruined Star Trek' is hillarious. Yep it wasn't Nemesis. It wasn't Voyagers 'Threshold' or assorted crappy lows. It wasn't numerous choices made on the Enterprise show, not least fucking it's finale sideways with TNG references. It was all JJ - blame him! Hur hur Lens flare!

Why do people keep saying "Disney" this "Disney" that for this, but not for Marvel movies? Or ESPN? Or ABC network shows?

Lucasfilm, is a completely independent subsidiary under Disney like Marvel or ESPN. It has absolutely no connection to Walt Disney Studios the film arm of Disney, no one from there has any sort of involvement in the film.

Disney isn't making this film, Lucasfilm is. Disney is as hands on with this film as they are with a given NBA game broadcast on ESPN.

And the higher-ups and the creative force at Lucasfilm virtually all pre-date the Disney purchase.

Kylo Ren is a pretty bad antagonist. His voice sounds like one of a few generic bad guys from Smallville.

so yeah I think it'll be mediocre

SW2009 was the first ST movie I ever watched so he succeeded in reaching me. And I liked it a lot.

I haven't watched any of the trailers or anything, but I assume the movie will be pretty decent.

I'd honestly be surprised if it ends up being worse than the prequels, if it does that'll be amazing in its own right.

Regardless, if the movie sucks I won't really care. It's just a movie

People (dumbasses) will proclaim it to be the best thing ever for a while, no matter what. So it won't really matter.

I personally expected to be another entertaining but unremarkable JJ Abrams joint. I also expect people to proclaim it the best thing ever.

I don't have entirely high hopes for the movie since it's pandering towards nostalgia than making a new story. Part of me wants it to be less than stellar so people eat each other over it. Think about a world where Marvel defense force is amplified by 1000, I want to see this world.

Umm... You sure love your silly internet drama.

I would rather watch an entertaining movie but to each his own.

Yeah, but there are thousands of entertaining movies that are already out and I haven't seen yet. Being able to see the hopes and dreams of my friends getting crushed is one way to satiate my schadenfreude that rarely comes around.

If everybody around me would shut up about The Force Awakens for a few minutes, I'd probably have the chance to get hyped for it though.

They are probably going to play it incredibly safe. It's not going to be anything mind blowing, but it's not going to be terrible either. I'm expecting a modern action movie with a Star Wars skin on top of it.

Take something average to decent, add a bunch of hype to it and you end up people claiming it's the best thing ever made.

To Data West's point, the live action blockbusters-to-be that HAVE been under Disney's direct creative control include

Tron Legacy

So not only is pointing at Disney to determine Star Wars' quality incorrect, it's not even a good safeguard against mediocrity.

Bobby
Bobby what the hell

Waiting for this review for sure.

I'm intrigued for their Half In The Bag about it. If they review it in that as good or above, then I'm not sure a Plinkett review would or could be done or effective.

The Plinkett Prequel reviews were amazing roasts because of their source material. RLM are smart guys and I suspect they wouldn't want to return to that well if a follow up couldn't match up
