What if The Force Awakens sucks?

Doesn't matter if it's the best Star Wars movie people will still shit on it especially here.

At worst it's gonna be JJ's Star Trek 2 and i really enjoyed that film regardless of mixed reactions.

I'll wager that for the majority of fans TFA will fall somewhere around 'better than Jedi but not quite as good as A New Hope or Empire'. That is, it's going to be a really good movie with strong characters and dazzling eye candy.

The overall hype for the movie's quality seems less exorbitant than it was for Phantom, so I guess that's a good thing.

It won't have the weight of expectations the prequels did, and the prequels already "suck", so that precedent has already been set.

I doubt it will be a colossal Lone Ranger type failure though.

I plan on treating the movie like I would an expanded universe novel, and a lot of those I really enjoyed. In fact I hope its Heir to the Empire tier quality, but that may be a steep expectation.

EDIT: I do worry that if certain rumors are true, that audiences will turn on the film, regardless of how it moves the story or establishes the villain as a true villain and not some dude with a cool glow sword and ninja moves.

I refuse to believe it will be bad.

I think it's pretty safe to say this will be fucking awesome.

Nothing is safe.

The phantom menace had great trailed and hype too. And on opening night, many thought it was good. Then the real reflection began and people remembered how often they cringed during the movie.

If it sucks, i won't tell immediately, only after coming here and reading from hundreds of angry fanboys that it sucks, will i realize it.

kidding
?

Thats going to happen even if it's great. The angry ones, especially when in the minority are usually the loudest and post the most.

I just want it to be different and move away from the original trilogy. I hope by episode VIII they move away from Han, Leia, Luke and just focus on a new story. Star Wars has so much potential to be more than just what everyone loved 40 years ago. Stop making these movies rely on a few central characters and let it grow to something greater. Don't rely on nostalgia because that will lead you into a corner. I must be one of the few who groaned when Han showed up in the trailer. I absolutely love Han Solo and the entire original trilogy, but that's finished and I can watch them any time. Create something new that I can look forward to. I'm excited for episode VII but I'm not entirely convinced that they can remove themselves from episodes IV, V, and VI. We'll see.

I think it will suck anyway. From the look of it, it seems like your standard Science fiction movie. The world building and atmosphere of the original trilogy seems just not there.
But I hope I'm wrong.

Its gonna suck for some people. I can already read the future threads about it. "I didn't like TFA here is why" , "I have an issue with TFA", "TFA was a missed opportunity", "JJ Abrams has forever ruined SW for me." , "After watching TFA I can honestly say I enjoyed the prequels more", "JJ has nothing on Lucas and the original SW", "RTTP: TFA ranks lower than the prequels for me, here is why", "Changes you would like to see in the TFA extendend version that should make it good?" and on and on

Have you watched any of the trailers for TFA? The focus is almost entirely on the new cast, with Han only really being there to play the old mentor role.

I think they'll go all in with the nostalgia with episode VII, but more more away from it with VIII and IX. same with the spinoffs. theoretical Obi Wan/Boba Fett/Han Solo spinoffs will be nostalgia driven, but still like Rogue One will be really interesting to see where they go.

People online will complain about it forever, everyone else will get over it, and Star Wars will still be one of the most marketable and iconic franchises of all time

It's pretty doubtful, considering behind it all is Disney, and they have the utilities and funds to suck-proof most of their important properties.

But what if....just what if...it sucks balls? Like it's just a huge dissapointment. On par or maybe even worse than the prequels? What will you do? What will the world do?

People didn't learn their lesson after the prequels.

They've once again built Star Wars into something that couldn't live up to their expectations.

Meanwhile, the film will be more or less like the other Star Wars movies: Mildly enjoyable kiddie fare.

It can't be any worse than Episode 2. Really don't understand why 1 gets so much hate when that exists. Not even Jango Fett could save it.

I'm going in with expectations that I might get choked up a couple times because I'm seeing these characters and hearing these sounds I love again after so long. Other than that, I have no expectations when it comes to story or action although the action is probably going to be fucking awesome.

Well the movie is popular so by default a bunch of hipsters already hate it. Even if the movie turns out to be a flawless masterpiece, there will always be people that bitch about anything.

LTTP: I don't get the attention over The Force Awakens
LTTP: Am I the only one that didn't like TFA?
LTTP: Why did I watch TFA? I don't even like a sci-fi

Seriously thought the movie has to be alright at least.

The fate of my BB-8 toy depends on it.

I'm gonna crush it to pieces and send it to JJ if TFA sucks.

jk I'm sure TFA will be good

The inception of this post is how hipsterish it is to "call out" others that might take that route.

Truth is, controversial opinions will always exist, ESPECIALLY with high profile movies like this. There is never a 100% consensus for movies like this.

It'll probably suffer the same fate as the sequel. That is, it'll get made fun of and people will generally see it as pretty disappointing, but it'll still make tons of money and people will still continue to watch them anyways.

If it sucks, it will be a bummer, but you know... it's not like it will hurt the franchise considering the last three movie didn't seem to.

Q: Is JJ Abrams going to fuck up Star Wars?
A: How can he? I'd like to see him try.

Seriously, the bar is set pretty low at this point.

If it's worse than prequels it should at least be really interesting.
One of my friends said "what if it's worse than the Prequels?" the other day. Then we watched episodes 1 and 2. There's literally no way this will be worse than those. No. Way. I refuse to believe it's possible.

I think enough people have their hands in this pie to make sure it won't suck, as opposed to the prequels where it seem like Lucas' ideas went unopposed. The issue I can see is this movie being too safe or bland. It will probably end up being A New Hope Redux in a lot of ways. I don't see many risks being taken, at least for the first film.

If people dislike this film, I don't think they are going to come out and say, "That sucked" but instead "That's it?"

It will be the usual Abrams staple --- a pretty good Star Wars sequel but with glaring flaws that pisses off the fanbase.

I'm more curious at how many threads in the line of "Star Wars isn't anything special really." or "Did JJ just doomed Star Wars canon?" threads afterwards.
