What is making the PS4 a massive success?

What does the 360 or xbox one have anything to do with this discussion?
I only pointed out the ps4 features that you were desperately grasping at as being great, are actually far from it.
I would consider it "revolutionary" if it actually felt like playing the game on your own console- which it doesn't.

lol

hilarious how some people are painting ms as the underdog and how they knew sony was going to dominate if both consoles were launching at the same time. some of the usual suspects though...so not really surprised.

as if they forgot last gen even existed and sony was coming from the ps2 and ms was coming from xbox. lol

Well Sony was always going to dominate worldwide so all they needed was a plan for north America. As soon as they had that they were automatically in the game. Anyway the gens not over yet but they were already going strong with ps3.
I have no idea what ms was thinking at the end of the 360 cycle it was sad.

I'd say its probably the strength of the brand and the lack of mistakes on the part of Sony as opposed to what went down with the PS3.

I bought a 360 last gen but in all honesty, Sony has to fuck up for me to not buy their console given the type of games I like.

A globally popular company leveraging its world renowned brand through social media wins and technical superiority (seriously, the PS4 is super sexy).

Good price and player friendly policies were the icing on the cake.

MS failed spectacularly at cultivating any global gaming presence in the past ~15 years.

Nintendo put their eggs in the wrong basket (casuals) and suffered accordingly.

Sony will forever remain the face of console gaming.

This isn't the reason for its success. The Xbox was vastly superior to the PlayStation 2, but was outsold by a landslide despite comparable pricing.

Controllers are important to the success of a console & also the size & design of the console. Xbox had that big controller & the console was also a big heavy box it was never meant to succeed.

Even those aren't significant factors. What it ultimately comes down to is marketing.

*Clear Messaging:

PlayStation 4 - The fourth PlayStation

Xbox..One? The "All in One Entertainment [something]" *sigh*

*Better Specs

*Lower price point

*Better posturing:

Playstation Plus was a non-required service people willingly subscribed to for its value.

Xbox LIVE was extorting people that just wanted to watch Netflix out of $60 a year.

I love my PS4, but this can't be the answer. Only just recently PS Now bumped up the # of available games I want to play on the system.

There are games, yes...but I'd argue there are better games on the PS3. Maybe not graphically better, but better.

Sony simply needed to correct the glaring mistakes they made last generation.

Add to that, Microsoft starting out with perceived mistakes this generation...AND Microsoft not being that liked by the rest of the world outside of their Office/Xbox divisions.

This is heavily biased... and partially incomprehensible.

LIVE and PS+ are essentially the same product, Sony just happens to be a decade late with its implementation.

Ps4 has a large number of third party games that are available on both the Ps3 and PS4. for many gamers that is all that matters.

He said was. On PS3 Plus was optional while Live was forced on you. Now both are almost mandatory.

I don't believe this was what he attempted to say, but you are correct that they are currently both mandatory to play online multiplayer. It just seems silly that some gamers are rationalizing nonexistent stratification in PS+ when both services are marketed at comparable prices and offer similar incentives.

It wouldn't be doing near as well if Microsoft didn't screw up so much. The price and their marketing image drove peple to get a ps4

Yes because you don't care for the games means that nobody can like the games. Great logic.

The controller has always been important.

It really hasn't.

The PlayStation controller changed very little since the introduction of analog sticks (aside from some interesting legalities concerning haptic feedback). Only recently has it been revised.

Microsoft's initial reveal combined with pricing derailed the momentum they built up with the 360.

Also, the "How to share your games with friends" PS4 video during E3? That was a kick in the nuts.

Xbox also released a year after PS2. Not that that mattered too much. If Xbox released the same year it still would have been trounced. PS2 hype was monstrous.

And every PlayStation has been successful so that should tell you that it's controller is a part of it's success. PlayStation controller was like the successor to the SNES controller.

Wii U would be at over 30 Million right now if it's main controller was a new & improved Wiimote. The Wii was basically a Gamecube with a new controller & it went from being the loser of a generation with 21 million sold to being the winner of a generation with 100 million sold.

PS4's success is down to salt.

It's the first virtual salt' powered console, so the more it sells the more online salt is generated, the more power each PS4 gets, the more it sells.

Of course, when there are finally some games available its fucked because there will be less salt.

No lol. Wii U failing was thanks to it's shit marketing, not a controller. Wii mote was old in the eyes of the casual gamer that went to tablets.

We should all take a trip down memory lane to demonstrate to the true magnitude of Sony's success:

Man, no one really gave Sony a shot in that thread, mostly betting on Nintendo being top and MS still edging pass Sony doing horrendous.

Well, except for Nostradamus here:

Sony finally puts their money to good use and actually creates a more powerful console than Microsoft and multiplats do look slightly better with higher resolution, AA etc but due to the cheaper pricepoint of Microsoft's console it sells better and generates more hardware and software sales.

That is until Sony finally gets some good 1st party games out that utilise the power of the PS4 enough for them to become system sellers. Sony uses their Gaikai streaming but it doesn't REALLY take off due to licensing issues in Europe, it does ok in the US.

Microsoft focuses on integrating all their hardware and services so the tablet, phone, kinect 2 and xbox work together and have one integrated service. The focus isn't heavily on Kinect anymore but they still make one and it has it's share of decent games and casual fans due to the (fairly) cheap xbox.

Nintendo's 3rd party support is comparable to that of the Wii and their 1st party games sell well but even Nintendo can't make innovative use of the Wii U's abilities and with the casual market not really being appealed to the hardware sales drop off fast and don't do that well to begin with.

People was still waiting for the Wii HD. A more powerful Wii with a nextgen Wiimote would have been successful.

From that thread.
I agree with this.

The PS4 will do worse than the VITA, they have lost to much brand recognition, exclusives and they have IPs noone gives a shit about besides nerds on the internet. Coupled with no backwards compatibility (due to the abandonment of the Cell), Sony is destined for last place again. Failing all that, the PS4 will be $499-$549 and we will get a repeat of the PS3 but this time it will be much worse.
Lol, Nostradamus was so wrong.
Quote me in 2 or 3 years. I know when something is about to bomb. Sony is very easy to read, even Patcher can do it.
Done.

He is pointing out the fact that you have Sony over Nintendo, which seems pretty insane.
Man, that thread is a comedy goldmine. Lol.

Hardcore Nintendo fans that already bought a Wii U, sure.

Everyone else? Nope. That market went to smartphones and tablets. Sony with their own PS Move moved that tech into the controller because no one wanted to play with a stick, so at most, Nintendo would've had Wiimote tech in the controller.

Just looking at the sales numbers, the Wii was dropping fast. The huge market Nintendo caught were not waiting for an HD Wii. They were already gaming on smartphones and tablets.

The sells was dropping because it was already close to 100 million & it was week console that wasn't HD when everyone was getting used to HD. Kinect & PlayStation Move was moving in on it's market & they was on more powerful consoles.
