What is the general consensus on the Infamous series?

With all the current next-gen speak, one ps4 title that seems to get a lot of mention is Infamous Second Son. From watching the trailer I can already tell I despise the main character, but I was still intrigued by the gameplay. Having never played an Infamous game, I decided to pick up the Infamous Collection.

I'm a few hours into Infamous 1.

The characters are boring (so far).
The gameplay is kind of clunky (sometimes trying to detach from a side of building is annoying).
The graphic novel style cutscenes are awesome.
Maybe I'm not far enough in, but the game seems to lack a main antagonist.
I just got to the part where you save the girlfriend on the roof after just seeing the "trash baggers" (or whatever they're called) leaders.

Does the game pick up soon after? If it doesn't ill probably try Infamous 2, because 1 just hasn't been doing it for me yet.
Or should I stick it through? I heard 2's story is largely dependent on 1.

It's really good.

EDIT: Serious answer:

- InFamous 1 really picks up in the second half of the game. The main antagonist is the guy they're constantly referring to as "Kessler."
- Cole McGrath is insanely boring. I'm surprised to see you say that Delsin looks unappealing in Second Son. After Cole, I can't wait to play as someone who WANTS their powers. Either way, the character actors they hired for Second Son are considerably better (Troy Baker!) and they're using proper motion capture, so if you like games like Uncharted/TLoU/etc, then Second Son may appeal to you more.
- The graphic novel cutscenes are awesome but there's less (maybe even none?) of them in InFamous 2.
- InFamous 2 is definitely more polished, but I wouldn't say it's drastically better than the first. I'm about halfway through the second game.

Stick with it. The game clicks once you have more powers. The story in either game isn't particularly great, outside of the endings for 2, but it's a fun comic book hero tale. The main villain is coming soon and you will face a few major conduits. I love both games because they exemplify the badass playground that so many open world games strive for.

One of the best new IP of this generation. Worth sticking with. Some characters *cough* Zeke *cough* are arseholes in the first one, but the story is great. I2 improves a lot of things from the first.

I am not a fan of the infamous series at all. Infamous 1 was 66% too long. If they condensed that game down it would have been way better. They just really strung it along.

Infamous 2 is better but I still couldn't get into it and the community created missions are atrocious.

Horrific characters
Boring plot
Lifeless silly
Hilariously bad "moral choices" with zero grey area
Motion comic cut-scenes which are one of the cheapest bullcrap ways to save money in gaming history.

Crappy super powers that mostly amount to Power X is a pistol, power Y is a sniper, power Z is a grenade! etc

I'm hopeful for second son though.

I've only played Infamous 1 and it was fine. Not great, not terrible. I really wish Sucker Punch was doing something instead of Infamous still.

InFamous gets better as you play, and it has one of the best endings ever.

InFamous 2's story didn't do justice do that ending, but everything else was improved

Does infamous 1 pick up speed? Is there a villain or something that makes the game interesting?
Yeah, and there's a somewhat cool plot twist. Not super huge, but the latter half of the game is better IMO.

I suggest finishing 1 first, but 2 is a much, much better game in every sense.

Thanks for the response. The game has been boring me to tears. But at least now I know there's something to look forward to.

Both have their issues, like some missions where the sheer number of enemies throwing projectiles at you and whatnot get frustrating, but I generally say each is worth playing. The second game is an improvement on the first in nearly every way.

And yes, there is an interesting villain, and you don't realize how interesting until after the final boss fight.

I'd put the Infamous games as the best superhero games this gen, tied with the Arkham games.

Delsin: "I asked for this"

Favourite IP of this gen. inFAMOUS 2 improves on the original in every way.

Sucker Punch seem to be stepping up to the plate for Second Son. Can't wait.

The original inFamous was a little rough, but I found it to be really great fun. inFamous 2 just improved on it, was fantastic.

I liked InFamous 1. It is a solid open-world game with good collectable hunting and platforming. I generally prefer 1 to 2, but 2 still has some good ideas, even if it does mess up stuff I really liked from 1.

And yes, InFamous 1 does have good villains. Just give it a little time to set them up.

The game really takes off though once you've acquired a few powers. The best thing that Infamous 2 does is give you the traversal powers from 1 right off the bat.

I tried 1 and 2, and for some reason, just couldn't get into them. I can't put my finger on it.

Instant water death made me quit #2

Great core mechanics and fun powers, but for me everything else is lacking

Bland lifeless cities with little to do
Story takes itself too seriously
Missions are generic as possible, things like "blow up a power station"

Not feeling like the new game is improving that much.

InFamous Festival of Blood is the peak of the series, its a dlc which is worth playing and it is standalone as well

I really like the series the abilities you unlock are really well balanced. Also jumping off of high points and landing feet down shaking the world around you never got old once.

IMHO, fun open world games that do a good job using super powers. Infamous had a a surprisingly great story with an awesome twist. Infamous 2's story was a let down but it played better than 1.

It's "fun". But nothing special really. Some parts are a bit redundant/tedious but the games are rather short anyway and fun for a play through. Got Infamous 1 for free when the PSN was hacked and Infamous 2 the last week for 9€ during E3 sale.

Oh yeah, forgot to comment on that. The biggest reason Infamous 1 can be somewhat boring at first is that you're stuck running through buildings. Train rails lack electricity and you can't glide or grind at first. Once that gets out of the way traversal gets way, way more fun.

couldnt get into it

i think if i had given them more then a couple hours to unlock more abilities i might have enjoyed them more

With Demons'/Dark Souls, inFamous 1/2 gave me more than any other series this gen a sense of place. I can't really put my finger on it, but they were the ultimate "Saturday morning" games for me, with a lore or atmosphere that really grounded characters and gameplay.

This is also one of the reasons why I'm nervous about Second Son -- the switch to a "real" place may challenge the fantasy of locations I loved in the first two.

Edit: holy shit, I jsut realized that both have no bg music. I wonder if that's why I love them both so much lol.

Powers are great, gameplay is fun.
Story and characters are forgettable, bordering on bad
Missions are nothing out of the ordinary

Still alot of potential for the next games in the series

Yeah. My initial impression was "wtf, this is not a fun game to get around in."

General Consensus and Internet Message Board don't go together.

In my opinion, fun series well worth playing. Could do with more enjoyable side distractions outside of the missions.

I Personally love the series. Second Son is what sealed the deal for me on PS4.

I liked how your powers developed more and more and you really did feel almost invincible. I think the story is kind of neat and I really liked how you could be good or bad and how your actions changed the game as well as the powers your gained.

Its not perfect but its sure is great.

This is me, pretty much. Hoping for good things from 3, but think the first two are mediocre games. Not really expecting much of 3. Hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

Only played Infamous2, really enjoyed it. Heard its DLC is super fun too but never had a chance to play it.

Invincible? I'm on easy and I'm finding infamous 1 to be a hard game. So many of the enemies constantly hitting you from really far away. Tons of grenades and rockets flying at you. And using major powers depletes your meter so quickly, Cole McWhatshisface feels like a weak super hero. So far anyway.

I just started playing inFamous recently and it can be boiled down to:

-Mediocre start
-The powers you end up getting near the halfway point onwards make it completely worth it
-If inFamous 2 is basically inFamous 1's midgame from the very beginning, I'm going to enjoy it

This, I feel, is an IP that you've got to get over initial hesitation/disinterest in before you find yourself truly having fun, but once you get to the fun, it's hard to stop.

I loved infamous 1 but it strangely felt like a mod of a more polished game in some respects.

Some tips to enhance your experience:

- characters and dialogue are all terrible, skip the cutscenes and save the headache.

- Missions get very repetitive, if you are bored 2/3rds through there is no need to finish it.

- The satellite up-link missions are so bad that you will want to take a forget-me-now after doing them.

It's an okay series. I thought the first game was a piece of crap with almost no redeeming qualities (though I quit a while after I got access to the second island, so maybe it got better), but the second game was great fun. It's just too bad that they put most of the focus on really bland, poorly-designed combat encounters. It's a blast when the game actually puts you in situations where it allows you to get creative with powers and lets you really take full advantage of the traversal mechanics.

The most fun i had with either was traversing the environments (which are more interesting in 2 imo), looking for shards and getting upgrades, that was fun and pretty addictive. It reminded me of Crackdown.

Everything else was pretty good if unspectacular, i'd say they're good games though and both are worth playing.

I hope the late game is worth it. The first 4ish hours have been the slowest and most uninteresting I've played in a game in a long time.
