Yeah, it's repetitive but I love games for their ability to transport me to another time and place, and the original AC is revelatory in that department.

Elite Beat Agents
Best portable game I've ever played.

Metal Gear Solid 2
The one that oozes batshit insanity and ingenuity and pure glorious fuck-all.

Eternal Darkness
Maybe the most perfect synthesis of character, story, and gameplay that I've ever experienced.

Mass Effect
Just an incredibly polished game from a content standpoint. Stirring and beautiful.

Bioshock
Sometimes the most amazing art design is enough.

ICO
Perfection. I've played this through a bunch of times and it's still as haunting and moving as ever. If I was numbering the list, this would be at the top.

Beyond Good & Evil
The best Zelda game of the decade.

Katamari should be on my list. This is way too hard.

i picked katamari specifically because--not unlike either of the chibi-robo games--it seems to have slipped through some sort of dimensional rift, from a universe where instead of becoming all about a reckless tumble toward mature themes and seriousness, games are about crazy whimsical worlds and just making something as fun, weird, and awesome as possible. i want to step through the warp and live in that damn world.

Did we really not do this yet?

City of Heroes

World of Warcraft would normally have taken the top spot hands-down, however even though I haven't played City of Heroes seriously in over three years, it was not only the game that got me into MMO's back in early 2004, it's also the game that single-handedly got me into PC gaming, and for that I am eternally grateful :D

My forum name and avatar photo are both taken from my primary CoH character

** The online is so well refined that I respect it from a design standpoint despite not playing it much any more.
*** I go back to this game and some aspects of a game just cannot age. It gets this place because I have not since played a game that has manipulated with my emotions so eloquently, or so frequently. The structure of the game is incredibly solid for such an inventive concept, and it has this bitchin' gold cartridge yo'!

1. Team Fortress 2 - My most played game of the decade. The updates will keep me around until TF3.

Don't sell yourself short, Kabouter :lol - I care and did read your list, and a mighty fine list it is.

I have played all the games on your list except The Moment of Silence and I have not yet bought Heir to the Throne. Soon the time will come to get back into EUIII...

No particular order:

Mario Galaxy
Twilight Princess
Pokemon Leafgreen
Kingdom Hearts II
Resident Evil 4
New SMB Wii
Portal
Bioshock
Elite Beat Agents
Any of the Phoenix Wright games

I'd also throw on Sonic Adventure 2, Punch-Out Wii and FFIV (first time I played it was on GBA) as runner-ups. Most of these I've chosen based on how many hours I've plugged into them.

1) Pokemon Gold/Silver
2) Zelda: Wind Waker
3) Portal
4) Super Smash Bros Melee
5) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
6) Elite Beat Agents
7) New Super Mario Bros Wii
8) Zelda: Twilight Princess
9) Animal Crossing
10) Super Mario Galaxy

Deus Ex
Perfect Dark
Crysis
Rez HD
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Bioshock
Shadow of the Colossus
Portal
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Super Mario Galaxy

10. Prince of Persia: SoT - It had to go on the list because it's dialogue, story and atmosphere is among if not the best in the industry.
9. Ninja Gaiden Black - 3D action perfected.
8. Shadow of the Colossus - One of the most beautiful and evocative games I've seen and pushes the hardware in unimaginable ways.
7. Freespace 2 - One of the last space sims ever made and probably the best.
6. Metal Gear Solid 3 - Unlike 4, this was the perfect balance of gameplay and story, building up to one of the most amazing endings in gaming history.
5. Silent Hill 2 - If I tried explaining why it's so incredible this would break into td;dr territory. It's awesome.
4. Quake 3 - The most revolutionary and advanced 3D engine for years after it was released, as well as the most balanced and purest incarnation of old-school deathmatch.
3. Mario Galaxy - One of the most brilliantly fun and creative games ever, and easily the best 3D platformer of all time.
2. Half Life 2 - The most refined and polished fps ever made. Redefined the concept of physical interaction in gameplay, with some of the most amazing set pieces and scripting ever.
1. Resident Evil 4 - I've played through this game half a dozen times and it's still every bit as enjoyable. Amazing level design, pitch-perfect pacing, very lengthy playtime (but not so long that it wears out it's welcome), stunning art design, brilliant difficulty balancing and visuals that are eyecatching even today. I honestly cannot think of a single flaw. It's perfect.
