• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

what jrpg are you playing right now ?

I'm currently playing Dark Cloud 2/Dark Chronicle and it's so amazing I love the sidequests they remind me of Zelda Majora's Mask and I love building my own town, it's really satisfying to see how it grows.

EDIT: Also I love how the things you accomplish in the present change the future.

Almost finished Xenosaga Episode 1. Its such an average game, I'll probably just watch the movie version for 2 since I hear its even worse and then buy and play 3 since everyone says its the best and the reason worth playing this series.

Playing through FFT: Advance. Its basically the fun of the tactics series gameplay without any attempt of having a story like the first game had. Not a bad thing since I really didn't care much for the original's story.

Also just bought Skies of Arcadia: Legends for the gamecube because I hear its pretty good.

I got back into Etrian Odyssey 3, which is terrible because my backlog won't stop.

It's not a JRPG but I want to play the whole P4A storymode, is it worth it?

I played P4A only for the story mode pretty recently. I found the overall story pretty decent, but it can be a drag. A lot of the individual stories rehash the same stuff. Still, I thought it was worth it.

Its fucking garbage. Its pretty much the same exact scenario for every character. I finally gave up after I did every story but Labrys.

Thanks, this will help me keep my expectations low... not a fan of it being constant rehashing.

found my old PSP so finally started Trails in the Sky. 6 hours in and ... It's ok? Initially found the battle system frustrating due to moving around an isometric grid with a dpad/nub, but used to it now. The story has been pretty generic so far, but at least the characters are likeable. They sure like to talk in this game huh.

Never got to play it and saw it was a cool $4.99 on PSN so I picked it up. Amazing game and I'm still in the beginning parts of it.

PS3

Drakenguard 3

PSP

I just finished Y's Seven on the PSP. Fun little game, loved the combat and gameplay. Story was as generic as they come but it had some funny characters in it.

I'm not replaying Legend of Heroes: trails in the Sky for the PSP in preparation for the release of chapter 2.

PSvita
-----------

I am starting Persona 4 tonight after finishing Dragons Crown.

Still playing FFX HD on the PS3. This time I managed to capture all monsters ten times and clear Omega dungeon including defeating Omega. What's left is 24 blitzball matches, grinding to fill up sphere grids, defeating dark aeons and monster arena bosses. It feels like after this point, the game is going to get more tedious. I'm not sure whether to do everything tbh.

There is a game with an old savefile that I decided to continue with. It's a 2008 game that was released in Japan only and sold around 2000 copies. I would be suprised if other gaffers played this game, it's Coded Soul: Uketsugareshi Idea.

My savefile is from 2010 and it had 12 hours on the clock. Fast forward about a week later, I've played the game for a total of 25 hours and am exploring the last dungeon.

It's basically a random generated dungeon crawler with monster collecting and an action RPG battle system . The monsters are from Folklore (PS3 exclusive)! The game has a unique take on its design decisions and mechanics, though it is also flawed and it was clearly made with a tight budget.

Its progression system is pretty addictive. The way you customize your weapons and monsters is done well. You fuse monsters with your weapons to make your weapons stronger and select which ability to pass on. The monsters themselves can learn new abilities through items and equip stat skills or skills that add effects as well. The game doesn't look bad and it doesn't sound bad either. It has a nice futuristic style to it and there is also a story that is voice acted pretty well, even though the story itself is one you've seen plenty of times before. I do like that even though the premise of the story is very predictable, it is about adults for the most part instead of kids. You have a time limit to explore dungeons but it's not as bad as it sounds because once you find orange teleport stations, you can continue where you left off and the time resets from that point forward. The teleport stations are spaced out pretty well, so I never really felt like time was much of an issue. Because the map becomes visible as you explore, it adds some nice tension and dynamic to reaching the next room.

That said the main character has a funny walking animation, he also walks slowly. I wish there was a run button somewhere. You also can't escape from battles (as far as I can tell) which can get annoying sometimes. *Edit: Escape can be selected from the menu. I must have not noticed this sooner for not making use of the menu during battles* There are 6 dungeons in all with one main hub that acts as a town. The characters don't have a lot of animation or are visually expressive besides the 2D portraits.

It's a quirky game that despite not being all that great, it has some charm to it and I enjoy playing it. You don't have many of those kind of games being made anymore. You know, experimental RPGs with that kind of setting and not relying on t&a to sell a niche game.

I remember Coded Souls. I remember thinking the promo art looked good. Didn't someone note worthy work on it?

I just finished Ys Memories of Celceta. It was ok. I like Ys games because quite honestly they are pretty pick up in play. It's not like the combat is complex, it's just frantic. It's smooth and responsive so I can easily get into it. I kind of just ignored the story in this one and 7. Just not something I find really interesting.I did like the world and how all the parts of it didn't feel too copy and pasted. Though, I thought towards the end the game added a much un-needed deathblow thing that forces you to switch to Adol and thus kills the momentum of battle.

I've been playing Type-0 because of the Translation patch. Seems ok, though I think it suffers from the same problems XIII has. The story kind of just throws you into it without really explaining much. You aren't eased into anything, even the characters. The characters seem even more "teen anime" then usual, but then again I guess this is FF high school even though it's weirdly violent. The mace girl is obnoxiously cute and a obvious waifu character so I don't think I'll be using her.

I also have been playing Grand Knights History which is a very beautiful and classy jrpg.

I need to get back to The Last Ranker which really kind of feels like Lightning Returns the proto-type. It has a very similar battle system in how it's semi real time and you control one person. It even has a "break" mechanic.

But really I've just been playing a lot of FF14.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that. And yeah, it has nice and appealing artwork that's pretty unique!

The games you've been playing, if I try and play 3 RPGs at the same time it would be too much XD You're doing that and more.

Thanks, this will help me keep my expectations low... not a fan of it being constant rehashing.

I played around half the characters and I'd say play one from each of these groups. You'll get the full story. Some characters have a bit of extra exposition at the beginning only to let you know what they've been up to, e.g. Akihiko. Spoilered only for the most dedicated who want to go in totally blind, no story spoilers here.
1) Someone just from P4 who stayed (Yu, Yosuke, Chie or Yukiko)
2) Someone involved with P3 cast (Mitsuru, Akihiko, or Naoto - I recommend Mitsuru or Naoto, they have the most interesting exposition). ~50-60% overlap with P4 cast, but some cool stuff that ties into Personaverse.
3) Labrys - her story is lengthy, 90% unique and the best part of Arena IMO
4) Velvet room lady whose name escapes me

I don't remember exactly where Aigis fits in, I think with the P3 cast. Didn't play Teddie.

Since the World Cup is on, I'm mostly sticking to my Vita and phone. So in addition to doing the FFV FJF, I finally decided it's time to blast through the original Grandia. I've started it many times, and made it past the wall once, but I feel like now's a good time as ever to just finish it.

Does anyone know if Remote Play (PS3->Vita) will let you change the resolution of PSone games? I have the Dragon Warrior 7 discs and I'd love to play it, but it's so stretched on the Vita screen it's just horrendous. I've tried to find an option to change it but I can't find it.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I was only looking at holding down the PS button options, but I think you can hold down the touchscreen and get more, right?

I mean like it had some interesting people working on it.

And it did. The team that made Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner was behind it and I guess Hitoshi Sakimoto supplied some music.

I've never played it myself, but maybe one day I'll import it. It can't cost too much.

Yeah, I've got a lot on my plate. I haven't even played Lightning Returns, but quite honestly at this point I don't know if I'll ever get to it. I'm ok with XIII. Thought XIII-2 was pushing it and I just can't care about whatever LR is about. Maybe the gameplay is good, but it just seems like a miss mash of crap gameplay wise and story wise. I mean XIII-2 got crazy when it through in time travel into a story that already had shaky world rules, but was about normal people with a crap destiny. LR just looks like it went off the deep end and I can't bring myself to play it.

I'm playing Bravely Default right now. Just returned to it after a month or so break. I'm only in the first chapter after the prologue, and it's kind of difficult. The dungeon with the
thief from the watering hole as the boss
took me close to 2 hours last night, the boss fight taking a majority of it. Then I got my ass whooped when I fought
Profiteur.

After I'm done, I plan on playing Xenoblade, Ys: Memories of Celceta and finishing FFXHD.

Great writeup - I've never heard of this game before and it seems I'm not alone (with those sales)... that's what I love about threads like this - discovering games I've never heard of before that sound interesting.

Figured it out - if I set my PS3 to 480p, 4:3, the game isn't stretched when I remote play with the Vita. Still get some weird flickering from time to time though.

Playing SMT: Nocturne. Currently at level 94 and grinding at ToK 3 with all 25 mag. trying to get a good team together for the final final boss for that special ending.

Finished Soul Hackers the other day, took me a while because I couldn't find any demons with defense buffs until I just kept fusing demons. The ending was pretty brisk and strangely sombre, I did enjoy it though because it just ends rather than ripe up the melodramatics.

Started Xenoblade the same day I finished Soul Hackers about 22 hours in and really enjoying it so far, I thought it'd be hard to break into but after the first few hours I'm actually hooked. The further I get the more intriguing it'll be to see that Shulk in Smash rumour come true.

I'm working through Bravely Default on 3DS - and "working through" is the correct terminology. I'm currently on Chapter 8, since I didn't want to shortcut through to the end. Hoping to finish the game by the end of the day.

Such a promising game with such a fun job and battle system - completely ruined by the copy and paste nature of the later chapters. They should have cut about three chapters out of it; I got the "twist" of the game the first time it happened. The "remixes" that you encounter are fun, but could have been done much earlier in the game.

It has some key features I wish they included in more jRPG's: being able to set your encounter rate to whatever you want, no matter where you are, and useful job skills like "Obliterate" that make grinding painless and easy. But damn, they should have just gone with a shorter game, even if it cut out 10-20 hours of repetitive play time, and left things on a high note.

After this, I'm finally turning to "The Last Story" on Wii (it's been sitting in my backlog for a year), and someday I'll actually do a second playthrough of Xenoblade, since I deleted my original PAL save when it came out in the US.

Don't do it. I trivialized the fight with my team that way on hard mode. It's probably too late for you already at 94.

Can you imagine how awful to play the original game must have been? No changing the encounter rate, no speeding up battles. Those latter chapters must have been even more of a torture.

Tales of Xillia. About 14 hours in. WOW! I think this is my favorite Tales game that I have played yet. The narrative is damn intriguing and am loving the pace. The dialog that happens in response to doing in-game stuff like raising stats is a nice touch. Changing main characters opens up incredible variety of playstyles. It also is a godsend to be able to teleport between areas early on.

So yeah, this looks like it will be the first Tales game I will actually beat since Destiny 1. As a non Tales fan I am happy that they finally won me over.

Currently playing Xenoblade Chronicles for the first time. I started off loving the game, but I am getting close to YouTube-ing the rest of the story because I am not attached to any of the characters, the pacing is slow and the battle system has become tedious. Will play a little but more before deciding, though.

Edit: I kind of want to play something difficult on the NES such as Bayou Billy, TMNT or Abadox. Otherwise, I am considering jumping into something Damon's Souls, A Link Between Worlds, Valkyrie Profile or Final Fantasy Tactics.

Final Fantasy Type-0 on PSP. The intro movie was so epic and it hooked me immediately. The gameplay is very fun and fast unlike normal Final Fantasy games. I'm only 3 hours into it, but I'm liking it a lot so far. I might get it for PS4 if they properly HD it (unlike FFX/X-2).

Finished FF X HD the other night, still makes me do a little tear.
I contemplated going for some more side quests and trophies but I just can't bring myself to bother, and FF X-2 won't be getting played for a while either now, if ever.

Might make a proper start on Tales of Symphonia HD, I was thinking about doing all the extra things in Ni No Kuni but again just couldn't bring myself to bother. Not enough time for grinding these days!

Xanadu Next. It has some very uneven difficulty and it doesn't control as nicely as the Ys games because it is designed for mouse/keyboard, but its still fun.

Loving the art style and the little doll guide dude is pretty funny. Combat is also interesting.

First impressions of the open world is it looks huge especially with the camera panned back so far. Reminds me of the older FF world maps.

Golden Sun and The Denpa Men 1.

I put it off for a long time, but I'm glad I'm playing Golden Sun now. It's a lot of fun. The second boss fight (First Lighthouse) was a very nice challenge, and I like the whole Djinn/summoning/standby/mix-and-match stuff. Thankfully I have the second one as well.

The Denpa Men is very straightforward. My favorite part about it are the boss battles because the music is awesome and they can be challenging. Getting to them can be annoying, though, and the late-game dungeons were brutal, I felt. I unlocked the post-game dungeons and am doing those now, but I have to grind to reach the recommended level. Regular battles can drag, honestly.

Don't know how far you are in Xenoblade, but I was in the same boat until recently. I'm about 35 hours in and a plot point increased my interest in the story. I'd still play w/o that event though, since I like the battle system.

I finally got a 3DS so I'm going through Bravely Default. It is great so far! Hoping to grab Rune Factory 4 within a few weeks, might snag SMT IV while it is still on sale if my meager finances will allow it.

I'm playing SMT: Nocturne at the moment. I'm at level 37, got through Kabukicho Prison (which was a nightmare because I didn't realize I had to talk to the NPCs) and fused Daisoujou.

SMT Devil Summoner Raidou vs the Soulless Army

Im excited for the sequel being released on psn next week, and right now I'm enjoying this one. The combat is alright but the setting and music is amazing,

Started Xenosaga 2 some time ago but then got sidetracked by DMC4 and did another play through of that, which led to another play through of DMC3 (once with Dante and once with Vergil) and that resulted in another play through of Bayonetta (finished the lost chapter, woo hoo!).

Anyway... now I'm back to Xenosaga 2. Can't remember much from Xenosaga 1 and 3 (played them years ago) but 2 already has my attention in terms of story just a few hours in. Even if I don't enjoy the battle system I will probably finish it for the story.

It would be nice if characters ran faster though.

Ni No Kuni

But i'm not really enjoying it, I find it somewhat childish, easy with a not so appealing combat system.

Not sure if I was expecting something else after all the rave reviews and such, or if I am just getting too old for Jrpgs.

Playing Xenoblade Chronicles again since XBCX has me so excited. I played this on my Wii last time so I'm doing myself a favor and playing it on the Dolphin in HD this time. So good.

Friend of mine has over 40 years and plays in jrpg only. :)

NNK is very specific jrpg. I couldn't understand fight system for many hours, but at least I did it - I think so. IMHO NNK is a good game. You should play it a little longer. Maybe you'll change your mind.

Just finished Digital Devil Saga 2.

What a journey, what a journey. I hope that ATLUS will make something similar to DDS again.

Next, I'm gonna continue finishing Innocent Sin on my Vita.
