• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

what jrpg are you playing right now ?

I don't play many of these any more but the last two I played, besides Pokemon X and Y, were Ni No Kuni and Earthbound. The Mother series I play randomly every year or so just because I love it so much and Ni No Kuni I played because it was only $5 on PS+ and because it really is a charming and relaxing game.

Gonna buy a Vita soon and my first games are going to be Chrono Cross (played before, still have complicated feelings but mostly love for it) Persona 3, and Persona 4 Golden.

Ni No Kuni

But i'm not really enjoying it, I find it somewhat childish, easy with a not so appealing combat system.

Not sure if I was expecting something else after all the rave reviews and such, or if I am just getting too old for Jrpgs.

Ni No Kuni is kinda of an odd duck, it's obvious aimed at a younger audience despite the fact it was marked as a game for studio Ghibli fans.

I need to get round to playing Ni no Kuni too. I bought a PS3 for it, and have yet to get much farther than Ding Dong Dell. :X I like what I played of it (though would have preferred a more turn-based combat system), and I love the music, but I was stupidly expecting the in game graphics to also look like a Studio Ghibli movie so naturally was a bit disappointed. The staff interviews at the end of the Ni no Kuni strategy guide mentioned they had younger audiences in mind when they made the game, I think (can't remember the exact phrasing). Maybe the marketing focus shifted with the English version.

I'm playing Jeanne D'Arc, Bravely Default and Totori at the moment, though Totori is kind of in limbo.

Bravely Default:
Just beat the Barbarossa/Praline/Qada/Kikyo/Kamiizum battle without using bravely second! Took my a bunch of tries to get my strategy right.

That was the first battle I had to significantly deviate from my typical class/party setup. Those bonus fights are quite enjoyably challenging.

I've been working my way through Xenoblade Chronicles.

At about 30 hours, I'm getting pretty bored by the rinse/repeat gameplay going on with getting to a new location, exploring it, getting/completing quests, then moving on. Some of the stuff, like the relationship chart and heart-to-hearts sounded pretty awesome early on, but I realize I care about neither at this point. I think I more interested in the overall story and how that affects the characters, not small moments between town NPCs. It all feels like a massive amount of padding, but missing it means missing out on a good deal of items and money, so I feel almost forced to do them.

The game areas are pretty big and beautiful though. I'll stick with it, but things might slow down if I can't overcome the tedium of all these quests.

Count me in as one of the people bored out of their minds playing Ni No Kuni. I've been playing for a bit over 13 hours and the game is still moving way too slowly.

Combat is both easy and tedious. The familiar designs are awful. The taming mechanic is really terrible. When I saw a sidequest that required you to get two specific familiars, I thought for sure that the game would eventually introduce some way to have some input as to what you want to tame. Found out that's not the case. I also read horror stories of people having to grind away for 3-6 hours on the mid and endgame errands of that type.

I just got the ship and I suppose this is where the game is going to open up. Though I also thought that on the last 3 towns I got to...I don't think I can take more than a couple more hours of this before I drop it all together.

The game looks really nice though even ignoring the Studio Ghibli scenes. I haven't been able to say that about a non-Final Fantasy jrpg in almost a decade, so it has that going for it at least.

Forget the side quests and just go for the story.

At first I considered doing them but then they started giving the quests every two steps and I thought nope. Not to mention the battle system isn't good enough for that much extended play without getting bored.

Played the game just following the story and it was great. You will have to stop and grind some towards the end for a little while but that's about it.

Going through Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World.

Went in with extremely low expectations and so far it hasn't been too bad. Definitely not great by any stretch of the imagination but it's been okay so far. The bits of fan service thrown in are nice enough to keep me going.

Emil and Marta are such shitty characters though. And the change in voice actors for the main cast is kind of distracting too. Raine's new voice is way too shouty at times and Genis sounds completely like a girl now.

I just got my account registered. Been lurking on this thread for awhile, love playing a good JRPG. I've been playing Suikoden II the past couple weeks, almost finished with it, I love the pacing of the game and can't believe I gave up on it last year for Grandia 2.

After I'm done I will start up on lucienne's quest for 3DO, looks fantastic.

After an on and off relationship with Final Fantasy XIII since 2010, I finally got to the last dungeon
(Oprhan's Cradle)
yesterday and I'm really glad I decided to finish it as it has been a very good experience for the most part.

Now I was wondering if FF XIII-2 is worth it and Lightning Returns for that matter.

Haven't played LR yet but if you enjoyed XIII then you should definitely at least give XIII-2 a shot, both are great imo.

I'm playing through Ni no Kuni for the first time. I'm about to
stop Old Smoky from erupting.

It's really good so far.

Me too, I just finished the event before heading over there and the battle system continues to evolve.

For those who feel the game is too slow I recommend giving the game a little more time. I'm about 10-11 hours in (really took my time with side quests ) and I just now unlocked the Pokemon elements of the game that I had heard about. A little bit before that I unlocked something that opens the battle system adding more depth and strategy than the simple press x, ocassionally heal pattern. I suspect (due to the nature of this expansion) that the battle system will open up even more later in the game.

The game was a bit slow at first but the story and art style helped push me along and now the game is really starting to click. Can't wait to start collecting everything/leveling up my dudes/etc.

Final fantasy viii. Never played it before, I have beaten ff v, vi, vii, x.

I just started but junctioning seems cool so far.

I've been playing Persona 4 Golden for a few weeks now. At about 40 hours in and I can't describe how happy I am with this game.

Seemed slow at first before the first dungeon started. But now I'm finding myself looking forward to doing everything outside the dungeons.

With about 30 years of playing RPGs under
my belt I ashamed I never gave persona or SMT my time. Other than watching a friend play Persona 1 back on ps1 and I tried P3P a bit.

Recently finished both atelier rorona and hyperdimension neptunia 1.

Not sure whether to continue with atelier totori or hyperdimension neptunia mk2.

Also, which would be more friendly for playing without the us of FAQs.

Started Xenosaga 2 some time ago but then got sidetracked by DMC4 and did another play through of that, which led to another play through of DMC3 (once with Dante and once with Vergil) and that resulted in another play through of Bayonetta (finished the lost chapter, woo hoo!).

Anyway... now I'm back to Xenosaga 2. Can't remember much from Xenosaga 1 and 3 (played them years ago) but 2 already has my attention in terms of story just a few hours in. Even if I don't enjoy the battle system I will probably finish it for the story.

It would be nice if characters ran faster though.

When I had a Xenosaga replay several years back, I youtubed Xenosaga II. I can never replay that game, especially how Namco altered the 'difficulty' in the English version.

I recently found a new copy of Xenoblade for $45 so I'm playing that. it's my first time playing it as well. I'm about 5 hours in and loving it

Playing through Final Fantasy IV for the DS. I stopped the first time because I got stuck at some part in the game. This was a couple of years ago. I started over again the other week and I'm doing much better!

Still playing Xenoblade. Side quests. Les Sigh(d) quests.

I did them all. Absolutely awful, almost killed the game for me. If Xenoblade Chronicles X has as many sidequests, I'm going to skip any ones i don't pick up through natural play.

As for what JRPG I'm playing right now, -- I'm playing the Star Ocean: First Departure on the PSP. It's really fun so far. The combat is a nice change of pace from DQ9's(the last jrpg I finished).

I'm so scared to play FF IV on the DS due to its supposed difficulty.

Yeah, some bosses can be a bit challenging...

I think I was a bit under-leveled the first time I played. The Dark Elf (boss) destroyed me a few times before I just gave up. This time I did a little bit of grinding and so far I'm doing all right. I actually beat him this time around. I don't usually like grinding, but I figured a little bit wouldn't hurt.

Started Persona 1 PSP. Heard lots of mixed things about this. I'm not very far yet (heading to the police station for the first time) but so far so good.

Do not neglect your guns. They're just as powerful as your magic attacks for some reason. You'll actually need those at the very end. I end up using the personas as a form of defense stats boosts.

PSP version included mini maps onscreen thankfully so the high encounter rate isn't so bad when you can see the "dead ends" nearby to avoid.

I've heard that advice yeah. I got quite a few tips before starting (thanks PK Gaming).

High encounter rates haven't really bothered me in other games but we'll see how I feel once I get lost haha.

That said though, I find Persona Revelations serviceable considering I've only played SMT If... on snes years ago. I got a lot of this series to catch up on. And yeah thankfully, I'm playing them in their release order to keep myself from being spoiled from the newer games' fusion formulas or rather the simplicity of it.

But yeah if you're going backwards, you can find this game harsh and archaic but that happens naturally if you GO BACK from having played better games today.

Finished Bravely Default. Final classes:

Tiz Knight/Templar
Agnes White Mage/Time Mage
Edea Performer/Spirit master
Ringabel Monk/Dark Knight

Overall, a great game. I agree with what appears to be the consensus about the middle of the game, but the boss battles at the end. I especially enjoyed
that the final dungeon didn't have any dumb puzzles or purposefully confusing design. Could focus on just getting to the bosses instead of filler.

Started playing Final Fantasy X earlier (finally), got about 25 minutes in when things started happening and my PS2 crapped out, I wasn't sure if it was the adapter or console itself but there was a fairly loud *pop* and it went off, so yeah guess I need a new one of those. I then decided to start on Final Fantasy VIII instead and I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far, about 4.5 hours in already.

I have never really liked JRPG's, but always had good memories of FFX. Decided to get it on Vita recently, as I thought I might give up on the PS3 version. Cannot stop playing it, just as good as I remember.

I don't know the first thing about JRPG's, I have only played FF games. Is there another similar Vita game I should try out? Aside from X-2 ofc

Ys: Memories of Celceta(real time) and Persona 4 Golden(turn base).

Currently I'm playing Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the new world from Tales of Symphonia Chronicle. Obviously using Japanese voice option on both.
