• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Currently like 5 hours into Vagrant Story. I like it al lot, but the systems sometimes make me feel like I'm doing things wrong. Wish weapons switching was faster. I sort of wish I could also combine weapons outside of a workshop. Have 2 blunt weapons and they both aren't as strong as my edged wepaon. My piercing is also lacking.

I'm catching up on the Atelier series (well starting with the PS3 era) and I must say I dislike Totori nearly as much as I loved Rorona.

Not a bad games but...
- IIRC the remake of Rorona is newer than the Torori one and it shows on some quality of life UI improvements.
- Subjective but when the stars of your cast are the characters of the previous games and the newer ones are just passable, you have a problem.
- Writing is... sparse to say the least.

Basically each multi-hour session consists of : 'fuck, yeah, this was not as bad as I remembered, I'm too harsh on this game', followed moments later by 'well I played for x hours now, nothing happened, nothing ever happens, please kill me'.

I've spent ten hours on Trails of Cold Steel and don't have it in me to continue. Everything is just so clunky - movement, the battle system, dialogue. It's actively a chore to play.

I am grateful I played totori before all the remakes came out. I loved it (still do) when it first came out, but they refined the systems very well for the sequals. I played it blind the first time through, and the last boss destroyed my party.

Oh God I'm shitting bricks here. Don't get me wrong I don't hate the game, but I've gone blind too and if I can deal with the idea of passing on the true ending, I supremely wouldn't want to be stumped on the final boss. And yeah my team is a little too under-powered to my liking.
But hey... I never forged armors or weapons until yesterday in year 3, maybe there is still hope if I stop being stupid ^_^

I always come across as an asshole in Atelier threads because I feel there's always enough time to update your stuff if you fought a final boss but got wrecked. then the asshole factor comes in when I read people actually do end up missing true end reqs because they ran out of time and I'm there wondering what the fuck did you do lol

Well, I've only played Totori Plus, but I imagine those people (like me) tried to experiment with the crafting system or explore the world, which was apparently something I was actively punished for as I didn't make it to the True End.

After that, Shallie became the first Atelier that interested me again due to removing what I felt was a dumb mechanic in the time limit.

heh I think the time you get also factors in exploration and fooling around with alchemy.

There's definitely enough time to explore all locales in Totori. by the time you get to the end, you'd have visited almost everywhere anyway.

Maybe people aren't making the time saving items like the World Gate or whatever. and for some reason are making multiple trips between continents with the ship when they only need to make three maximum.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the true ending is not only gated by time, far from it. Isn't there a character you musn't kick out of your party for many levels (25 ?) in order to obtain his ending ?

Lost Odyssey. Haven't played to many jrpgs before, this games seems to be pretty traditional from what I've heard for better or worse. The hidden short stories are much stronger than the main story thus far.

yeah, true ending requires you to get all character endings and one of them needs you to kick them out before hitting 25 because you'll hit a point of no return. plus there's the whole ending priority thing

k never mind the true ending. dunno why I even talked about that. I still think people should, at the very least, be able to hit good ending reqs on their first run

Jumped back into Persona Q after watching more of Giant Bomb's Persona 4 Endurance run. The game is great, I've moved past only using my favorite characters and I'm having more fun. Midway through the third labyrinth, but I'll probably stop soon because XCOM 2 is imminent.

I'm also playing through Trails in Cold Steel, haven't gotten too deep, it looks like I'm about to start my first "real mission". I'm enjoying it a lot, I hope to play some more before Fates comes out.

I've been playing Trails of Cold Steel, and Trails In The Sky Ch 1.

I'm thinking about playing Breath of Fire 3 when it comes out on the PSN. I never played any of the BOFs, but I heard a lot of good things about them, especially 3.

I'm like 35 hours into Trails of Cold Steel, and I still absolutely adore this damn game. It's like it comes from an alternate reality where JRPGs didn't go completely off the rails. It's a really nice change of pace from the enjoyable, but ultimately disappointing Xenoblade X.

Maybe the most exciting part for me is that I haven't played Trails in the Sky FC or SC. I have both of 'em, so I guess I know what I'll be playing next.

I have ended on an odd situation with three games started and not enough time:

- I was playing Persona 4 Golden until mi Vita died and had to send it back for repairs.
- I began playing Trails in the Sky in the meantime thinking I would finish it before the vita came home again.
- And then I got weird cravings after seeing somebody on FB commenting on FF X / X-2 HD Remaster and ended doing a impulse purchase and playing it almost exclusively during the weekend.

In the end I need to pick one of those games and stick with it until the end or I will go nuts but it's rather hard when you like all of them the same. I believe Trails would be the safest bet, as I haven't beaten a JRPG since 2011 and it feels like the most accesible one: Save anytime, shortest of the bunch and sorta "simpler" in gameplay terms.

Regarding not having completed anything since 2011, I had almost give up on the genre until Persona 4. I have lost the count of the titles I have tried to play to then drop unceremoniously: Tales of Symphonia, Abyss, Wild Arms 3, FF XIII, SMT 3: Lucifer's Call...

It's a western RPG but it's so inspired by Earthbound that it might as well go here... but I finally gave Undertale a shot. About to finish up the
pacifist ending, then it's on to the genocide ending
. Interesting game, some nice music and sprite animation... but I think it tries a bit too hard with the 4th wall breaking and the memes/feels... never got into Homestuck either so this style of humor is a tad lost on me. Still an interesting game though.

This week I'm going down to DC for Magfest and will start FE Awakening on the train ride. I also started Guardian's Crusade but died without saving so I don't have any real impressions so far. I think that'll be the next game I play when I get back from DC. I don't think I've ever heard anyone but demi (RIP) talk about that one before...

About ten minutes into it.

I am nearing the end of Xenogears for the first time (amazing game!) and I am trying to decide what to play next.

Do I...

Continue playing:
SMT: Nocturne
Trails in the Sky SC
Digimon Cyber Sleuth

or

Play for the first time:
Final Fantasy XIII-2
LISA
Suikoden 3
Vagrant Story
Xenosaga
Shadow Hearts

or

Replay something I haven't played in a long time:
Star Ocean
Breath of Fire 3

About to finish up Tales of Zestiria.

It's a okay game. It feels almost bare in comparison to other Tales games, and the plot doesn't have the twist and turns that usually accompany these games..but it's fine. The characters are all fine enough and the battle system is at least involved enough to keep my attention. My biggest problem with the game has been how the game pretty much makes you spam the armateus. There's only so many times I can hear "FEAR MY WIND" before losing my mind.

It's been a solid 7.

I'm replaying Lufia 2. Why can't they all be this good?

Taking a break from Star Ocean 2 and Final Fantasy 12 both which I wasn't enjoying much.

Scheduling interrupted my schedule, but I'm still playing Tales of Symphonia.

Earlier today, I entered the Temple of Ice.

Well I just finished my final pacifist playthrough of Undertale. After taking a few weeks to get Final Fantasy XIV patch 3.2 onto back burner status I'll either go through FFIX again, Suikoden 2, or I'll try my hand at Earthbound again.

I finished FF X and I absolutely loved it, but I am not sure if I should play X-2. The J-Pop intro was kind of crazy and I am not sure if I like the combat system.

P3P again, this time started as a FeMC on Maniac (which may have been a bad choice) since I've been told that the FeMC links and differences are a lot better so we'll see.

I rather liked it, just an interesting twist on the old job system using dress spheres. My big issue was the real lack of new areas. You just revisit FFX all over again for the most part. Kinda got old quick.

Suikoden 2 on my Vita

And...

Suikoden%20V%20cover%20(US).jpg

Suikoden 5 on my PS2 (yeah, I still got a PS2 and a copy of S5)

Have been playing but put on hold due to having my Wii on my other howse...
Skies of Arcadia: Legends
Xenoblade Chronicles

Cold steel from the trails series. I'm on chapter 6 so near the end I think. Wasn't the best, good gameplay but found the cast to be pretty boring.

Does Paper Mario count?

Just about to start the sixth chapter. It's fair to say that I am absolutely in love with this game. Will start TTYD after I've finished this one.

Trails of Cold Steel. I spend ages just reading the lore, I love the game world. Some of the party members I'm not that keen on this time around though. Sleepy aloof girl and generic timid guy are a bit tedious, and the instructor seems like a blatant copy of Scherazard from TitS.

I like the way that theres a variety in the kids from noble families, where some are indifferent, some arrogant, some scarily capable and some quite friendly though. For a game that has a lot of one-note characters I thought they'd take the usual easy way out in stories about class systems/inequality and make all the rich people arrogant idiots, rather than a variety of personalities despite their privilege.

I posted this in my LTTP thread, but I thought I'd post it here as well. I just finished Xenogears sooo...

What has a beginning must have an end.

Xenogears is a hell of a ride. I definitely need to let it sit in my brain for a bit, but I am certain that I loved it. I look forward to reading the translation of the perfect works.

I can't help but wish they didn't have that cutscene at the beginning of the game, it let you realize way too many things before they were stated in the story.

Story was epicly great, I find the generational aspect very interesting, soundtrack had some amazing highs, gameplay was pretty fun, though fighting on foot was much more interesting than in gears. Spirte work was great, but most of the backgrounds were only okay or good. Only real downers for me were how convolted learning deathblows was and how it fell into the JRPG pitfall of having no progression in characters once their personal arc of the main story ended (also the Chu Chu were an absolutely awful concept done much better later on by Nopons). I feel like the game constantly shows the fact that the devs didn't have the time to do their ideas justice and yet it still works out beautifully. Because of this I actually liked the second disc, it allowed for the game to be more than it might have been. Tetsuya Takahashi and his team have to be some of the best seen in game developement, I think playing Xenogears not only introduced me to an amazing game, but also helped me appreciate Xenoblade even more, I see where it came from now. I look forward to playing Xenosaga even if it is not looked upon quite so fondly as Xenogears.

Xenogears is my favorite game of all time. I found Xenosaga boring and couldn't finish it. Unfortunately I have to say don't expect too much from it.

The only other VG stories that resonated with me in a way close to XG are Mother 3 and Nier. Maybe Last of Us too.

Considering what you just said about Mother 3 and Nier I think we probably share similar tastes, even still, gotta give Xenosaga a shot.

Tales of Zestiria.

Was on the fence a looong time for this one, but I must say I really like it. Story is a bit weak so far but the great crew and combat make up for it.

Playing through Digimon Story at the moment. I'm about three quarters in and clocking at around 30 hours.
I got the Vita version and the PS4 one but apparently since I bought them on different region accounts, even if I'm trying from the same user, I can't use cross-save. :( So that's pretty sad, I'd have liked to play on the big screen at home. But really enjoying the game so far.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel.

About 13 hours in. It's a bit of a slow burner so far (a little into Chapter 2), but I hear it picks up.
