• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Lucky. I'm hoping to get a Vita later this year and this along with FFIX will be the first games I play. I played through dragoon a few times when it first came out and I'm long over due for another play through.

Keep in mind that Legend of Dragoon isn't actually on the Vita store, you have to purchase it through the PS3 and then download to the Vita.

Tales of Xillia. It is my first tales game and I am loving it. Bought it during the sale and the first few hours were so so, but now I can't stop playing. I find the characters very endearing (especially in the skits), I'm interested in the story (its not great or anything, but it's enough to keep my paying attention), and I'm really enjoying the combat - its such a difference from turn based games I am used too.

I'm almost done with chapter 2.

I am enjoying it so much I went ahead and bought tales of vesperia, hoping I'll enjoy that as much as I am ToX.

I think it's way better. ToX was somewhat of a bore for me.

Awesome. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of my enjoyment of ToX is because of how novel the combat is to me. So if ToV is better, that means it can only go up.

It's exciting that I may have discovered a whole new franchise I enjoy.

Currently playing some Yakuza 4. Love this series!

Final Fantasy 13-2. Unlike most I enjoyed the first one quite a bit. I am an hour or so into it and all I can think right now is that the writers were on mind bending drugs when they wrote this script. Gonna stick with it though so I can play Lightning Returns.

Just beat a really hard and cheap boss fight in Suikoden 3
Sarah in the Ceremonial Site
, so basically right near the end boss. But then I had to leave, I'll finish the game (finally) tomorrow morning or something.

Good game but I like 1 and 2 more, overall.

Yeah I'm just finishing up 13-2 and the story actually gets even weirder.

It's a good game, but I think I prefer the first one. Pretty hyped for LR though, sounds like it bringing the challenge back

let's see.......(obvious spoilers below):

assuming you're around the level of your enemies, you're still 2 areas away from the final boss

It usually takes me a couple of days per area as I take it easy, so I've still got a decent chunk of game left to cherish. Thanks!

Right now, none. I'm a one game at a time gamer and Assassin's Creed 4 is my current game (and I love it). My next game will be a JRPG though and will probably be Tales of Grace F or Ni No Kuni, I don't know yet. Any advice which one is better GAF?

Didn't touch Ni No Kuni, but ToGF is kinda meh. Combats are nice, but the rest...

Almost done with DQV. Yep, it is the best Dragon Quest ever made.

Couldn't agree with you more. As for what I'm playing, my never ending replays of Final Fantasy IX to help get my FF juices flowing for the hopefully not too disappointing LR. I'll finish it like I did the previous two, but I sure as hell won't understand what is going on by the end.

Currently playing Crimson Shroud new game plus. It's a fun game, but some of the obtuse design decisions (Chapter 2, new areas in new game +) hurt it. Combat is solid, one of the few JRPGs I've played where buffs and debuffs are so important.

JRPGs are games I don't play that often, but the 3DS has got me buying a lot of them because so many of the good games on the system seem to be of the genre. In the last year I got Fire Emblem (left off gathering the children), SMT IV (~16 hours), Pokemon X (finished!) and Etrian Odyssey IV (bought on sale, haven't played yet).

Playing Neptunia 2 still. I wonder what happened to all gaming jokes, they forgot to include them this time? (><)
I like new shares, combat is better but still not good enough. Locations are better though, a little.

Would you guys consider Dragon's Dogma a jrpg, or is that more western-style?

It's safest to just assume the genre is split by origin to avoid arguments, but I understand what you're saying. WRPG's tend to feature open worlds more often. The Penny Arcade games (especially 3 & 4) play basically just like JRPGs, and they are made by Westerners.

There is no set convention and it really depends on who you ask. I personally consider Dragon's Dogma a WRPG and stuff like Septerra Core, Anachronox, etc JRPGs, despite their countries of origin.

One of my top 3 games of all time, Final Fantasy IX, I haven't completed it for years so I decided to get it on my Vita in the Final Fantasy sale and I've put almost 80 hours into it the past week. Absolutely love it!

Yeah, exactly that's why I was wondering

Easily my most replayed Final Fantasy. I do really love FF VII and X too and I thought VIII was also fantastic, but I've finished them all maybe twice. I've finished IX like 5 times.

Wish I didn't have this massive backlog, would love to replay it yet again

Tales of Xillia is the first Tales game I've played since Tales of Destiny. Thingss sure have changed. I get kinda bored with it, and then no longer. Also playing Final Fantasy XIV.

Hey, I'm playing Suikoden 3 as well. Only finished the 1st chapters, though, so I have a long way to go. Loving it so far. :D

Finally got started Lunar: Silver Star Harmony psp. I know people said it not the best version but the game look gorgeous on the vita, aged rather well.

Finished Tales of Xillia. Easy to a fault on normal, and the plot is a formless mess, but the fun combat and character moments made it a enjoyable forty hours overall.

It alternates, honestly. I get bored, and then it's fun again.

Yeah, beginning of chapter 4 on Millia's story was a tedious slog. The end of that sequence though, awesome.

Still on FF Type-0 after a little break.

Honestly, I am not really enjoying grinding in this game. Far, far too much EXP required to level up at level 30s and the Killsight system really draws things out just like the Break system in FFXIII and any other game that heavily relies on these "weak points".

Also struggling to take the loading time. If a Vita version ever happens, this along with regular fog effect are 2 gripes I hope to see much improved (and tone down Killsight/exp requirements and more enemy types...).

Won't be doing a second/third playthrough any time soon.

Over 40 hours in Ni no Kuni and I'm still playing.
I haven't any idea, that this game can be so hard in a few moments
boss fight in Fairyground and in Hamelin with this robot (after meeting with Prince)
. I am after found of
3 magic stones to Mornstar. Fight with pirate captain was great. 2 minutes and the end. One of the easiest opponent in NNK, so far.
My team has 41/42 lvl.

^ I'm just leaving Hamelin too through the graveyard area, my characters are about 30-32 and I thought I'd been grinding a lot.

I got really frustrated with the battle system around Al Mamoon, but I trucked through it and Hamelin was probably the first area where I felt I knew what I was doing a bit more and enjoying it. The battle system is still very flawed, most boss fights end with just Oliver left depserately hoping the enemy drops some blue orbs so I can throw a fireball or two. I never have enough MP and the MP-regen items are very expensive and I don't have the ingredients to make them.

Part of the problem for me is the HUD, I'm concentrating on what I'm doing and when to defend against big attacks and before I realise, Esther and the other dude are dead. The party stats are in the wrong place imo, the left handside of the screen is probably the worst place to put the party health bars.

You have a strong point here!
but doesn't it beat all purpose of Neptunia? It was to be comedy about gaming supposedly. What is it now?

I stopped mainly because of this, the dialogues just felt.. half-ass'd imo. The combat and maps are definitely better. I kind of like the 2D sprites better than the 3D ones when they were conversing. I have Neptune V waiting for me to play, so I should probably just force my way through it

Final fantasy XIII. I am trying to platinum it. then onward to XIII-2 before Lighting Returns comes out.

I recommend you take a break from plat'ing the game. Farming long-gui's will take a lot of time from you, which would be better spent on FFXIII-2 since Lightning Returns is coming out soon.

I took almost a whole year break before I got back into XIII to plat it.

currently playing Final Fantasy VI on PSVita. Got it in the latest PS Sale. Will play Lightning Returns as soon as it is released

it will take some time to plat these, depending on your progress it might be wise to play XIII-2 before you go for plats

attached 2 screens from my plats, as you can see plat for XIII took me 20 days and XIII-2 14 days. (i think I played 3-6 hours a day, too long ago to remember it more detailed)

i think the images are spoiler free:

Hey, I'm playing Suikoden 3 as well. Only finished the 1st chapters, though, so I have a long way to go. Loving it so far. :D

The game has some really nice twists in it, definitely keep with it... and try getting all 108 stars, you get a nice little bonus at the end for doing so... Finished it yesterday and now taking a break from RPGs till BD gets released.

Just bought my first PS2, and with that...... FFX :)

So far, I am loving it.

Enjoy ! Lots of superb jrpgs on that system. The best with tonssss of jrpgs.

As in my last post, I'm still playing raidou 2, just over 33 hours and am in the final dungeon. I'm seriously contemplating on whether I should do a new game plus since you can fight a certain boss on second cycle (I'm on chaos alignment).

Over 40 hours in Ni no Kuni and I'm still playing.

Are you guys per chance playing it on easy ? you can switch the difficulty. I've never had to use any MP items until very late game; mostly hp items but it was rare iirc.

I'm playing Earthbound for the first time. I'm still pretty early on and will be leaving the first town very shortly. The writing is great so far.

I finally decided to go through Legend of Heroes: Trails in The Sky on my psvita, a little bad timing on my part as the Steam version was announced not that long ago, but hopefully I'll be finished with it before the sequel comes out in a few months.

I'm about 12 or so hours in and have really enjoyed what I've played so far. The characters and dialogue are my favourite aspects at the moment while the battle system is sort of serviceable and not too overly complex. The interface is a little basic and you kind of have to dig in to access things like the bracer notebook which irks me a bit. The visuals are also a bit basic, but I realize it's a psp port of a pc jrpg which I'm playing on the vita. Those really the only minor negatives I have with it so far. It's been a while since I played a good honest old school jrpg, and Trails in The Sky certainly captures that and reminds me that we don't get enough of these types of jrpgs all that often anymore.

I had no idea there was a difficulty choice. If I chose one at the start, I've totally forgotten but would've chosen normal/default most definately.
