• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Over 40 hours in Ni no Kuni and I'm still playing.
I haven't any idea, that this game can be so hard in a few moments
boss fight in Fairyground and in Hamelin with this robot (after meeting with Prince)
. I am after found of
3 magic stones to Mornstar. Fight with pirate captain was great. 2 minutes and the end. One of the easiest opponent in NNK, so far.
My team has 41/42 lvl.

I had no idea there was a difficulty choice. If I chose one at the start, I've totally forgotten but would've chosen normal/default most definately.

yeah, there's no real point in playing it on normal.

I feel like I've started too many and had to put a few on the backburner.

Playing right now:

Bravely Default
Valkyria Chronicles
Final Fantasy VII

Played to some degree:

Xenoblade
Persona 4 Golden
Etrian Odyssey IV
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy IX

I'm alternating between BD, VC and FFVII for the moment, trying to finish the first one soon but I always get sidetracked and being the completionist I am, it's taking longer than it should. I'm almost done with Chapter 5.

In VC I've already reached Chapter 6 last weekend, trying to remember where I left it years ago. Incredible game, still.

As for FFVII, I've basically just started it and reached the Wall Market but I wanted to revisit the PSone era Final Fantasies. Had to switch to my US account to buy FFIX on Vita and since I'm too lazy to switch back to the EU account, I'll finish FFVII first.

My focus is all going to Etrian Odyssey IV at the moment. If New Little King's Story counts, I'm playing that here and there too.

Now back to Etrian Odyssey IV. I'm in Cloudy Stronghold, did 3 maps (Windy Archive, South Sanctuary and Golden Deer something) and explored the fourth labyrinth. Floors 1 and 2 are fully explored and the third one less than halfway through. It has become clear that I'm around the last 20% of the main game.

I've put 76 hours into it and it's still as engaging as ever. Other fans have stated that it is best to pick 5 members and focus on them, but I have been using and training all my characters. They're around level 45-46 except for one runemaster who is level 48. I'm going to keep using him because he is becoming a powerhouse with his runemaster and medic abilities.

Not sure if 76 hours is too much at this point in the game, but it's just too enjoyable training all characters and learning new skills. I can't bear picking one over the other, they're all useful depending on the situation.

Glad that you enjoyed it! It is my favorite RPG of all time.

Thanks, your avatar also makes a whole lot more sense now :P
Fei's different personalities along with the incarnations are the best parts about the game.
I can understand why it's your favourite RPG of all time, it definitely belongs on the list of memorable and special RPGs.

FFI here. Bought it in the last sale for the Vita. Why in the hell S-E didn't do FFVI with those sprites? Either way, cool game, it has its flaws but it is to be expected.

Juggling Chrono Cross and FFIX, both of which I played when they were new and have played several times. Especially Chrono Cross, goddamn I replayed that so many times back to back to get all of the characters and see all the endings. It's been well over 10 years and I'm honestly still kinda burned out. FFIX, I've been chipping away at the JP version which I never quite finished back in the day. I'm a couple of hours into disc 3. I started a new game back in 2009 when I got an imported PS3 and was suddenly able to go back and play all my old JP imports from the PSX era. I went pretty wild with importing back the PSX and PS2 eras, good times. I haven't played many imports or JRPGs in general since last gen started.

Also, the other night I started a new game of FFXIII after playing the Lightning Returns demo. Yeah... I was pretty drunk.

Not sure what to make of that.

Crappier as in your nostalgia goggles are off? I always thought the events came too quickly with little explanation and how it was over the top at times (I played the GBA port for a couple of hours). The rest of game still seemed pretty good for its time.

Either way, the DS version is a great way to enjoy FFIV if you don't mind the change to 3D.

I picked up final fantasy origins for 6 dollars on psn so I'm playing ff1. For the first time. I never realized how critical grinding could be. I love playing this game on my vita though, feels great

On top of Etrian Goodness in the form of II, I picked back up my Magician build in Demon's Souls.

Dungeon crawlers just ain't good unless they're brutal indifferent affairs...

Playing:
Dragon Quest V SNES (reproduction cart! I'm finally playing this in English on my SNES woooohooo!)
Xenogears PS3
Dragon Quest VI DS
Persona FES PS3
Star Ocean Last Hope PS3

Just bought:
Secret of Mana 2 SNES
The Bouncer PS2

Just beat:
Parasite Eve PS3

Are you guys per chance playing it on easy ? you can switch the difficulty. I've never had to use any MP items until very late game; mostly hp items but it was rare iirc.

No. I never play on easy. The game must be a challenge.:)
I changed difficulty level on easy in one game. The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, but this game was so boring to me.

I beat FF8 over the weekend and started playing FF9. It's ATB is so much slower than I remembered, especially after Auto-Haste+Spd junctions in FF8 D:

I stopped mainly because of this, the dialogues just felt.. half-ass'd imo. The combat and maps are definitely better. I kind of like the 2D sprites better than the 3D ones when they were conversing. I have Neptune V waiting for me to play, so I should probably just force my way through it

I'm struggling through it, still in second chapter though, it's funny how the first one was so short and second one is so long in comparison. Ya, it feels like a better game and it is, only it seems kinda pointless now.
Also I've met Nisa and Gust and although my characters know them from the first game, they pretend, they don't
I hate when devs do things like that in sequels.
I have Nep V myself, that's why finishing 2 seems like a right thing to do. Only I somehow imagined it being more fun, not mentioning much more funny.

Still trying to finish up Wii RPGs. Should I finish Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn or Xenoblade next?

Both aren't short games, you would want to choose one you want to play more, with time investment required.
Xeno especially overstays its welcome

I'm playing The Last Story for the first time. Very fun and it has it's moments. Battle system is AAA tier but it's a shame there are a lot of FPS drops. Story is expected but OKish. Surprised I haven't heard about it too much, also, multiplayer is dead, I can't even find any randoms to play with...

Played the Lightning Returns demo and it was better than I thought it would be... combat system reminds me of a mashup of Valkyrie Profile and FFXIII. The unorthodox gameplay structure also sounds appealing to me... but I had no idea what was going on so far in the story (and even though I platinumed FFXIII-2 and was one trophy (you know the one) short of platinuming FFXIII, I couldn't tell you the stories for those games either).

Preordered the collector's edition from SE's website after some trouble (not getting the confirmation email until 2 hours later).

Just finished Persona 3 Portable. It was brillant in every aspect (design, art, story).
Thrid time a charm I guess, since I never managed to get into P3 and P4 on PS2...I think it came from my anticipation (playing a great jRPG and something close to SMTNocturne) and what I got (social-sim+dRPG+dating)
I think since I was more "aware" of what I was getting, I had a blast with Portable, I was able to enjoy it for what it is. Also the game seemed to move at a faster pace thanks to the change in presentation. Also I can't believe I was actually EAGER to know what the characters had to say and how the story would progress. I can't remember the last time it had happen for me in a jRPG. Also, it made me THINK. It was a bit the "Evangelion" of videogame in that regard...full of anime cliché but done in such a manner, with so much wit that it becomes something else.

I have just begun P4 Golden...and the intro is sooooo long (well, P3 had the same problem), I think they could really improve that with P5...it's the only problem I seem to have now with this serie. Oh and the dating stuff, It was so lame...even if I didn't want to, I had to date all those girls in the end when all I wanted to do is to know them better...

I just finished Wild ARMs Alter Code F.

All and all I think it was a suitable remake. It's basically the story of Wild ARMs 1 in the style of Wild ARMs 3. Dungeons had a suitable balance of maze-like qualities and puzzle variety, the overworld is a little barren but does allow for some non-linearity and there are a couple of extra areas (and a bunch of items to discover). A large chunk of the music changes I thought were not drastic enough to be insulting, but there were a few that I didn't care for, such as the 'destroyed town' theme and the sealed library.

Even though it played a lot like WA3, ACF is much more shallow when it comes to party member builds and customizations - you can't do anything with the guardians other than cast them, and the only character you can effectively manipulate stats is Rudy. But I suppose the original WA didn't have much in the way of that either. The best aspect of the game is probably the 'collecting' of new guardians, passive skills, and such, and figuring out the dungeons. Because you can't change up your party make-up all too much, the general strategies don't really change throughout the game, so it did drag at times. Fortunately, you can skip most random encounters with the Migrant Seal system.

All I have to say about the story elements is that FMV scenes with self-paced textboxes were way too slow.

I just finished Valkyria Chronicles 2. It's a good game, but not quite as good as the first one. Time for some Bravely Default next when it releases tomorrow! If I finish that up before Tales of Symphonia Chronicles releases, I'll likely start up Valkyrie Profile 2 or try out that Valkyria Chronicles 3 fan translation.

I've finally been getting started on Ni no Kuni and am also checking out my first Tales game (Xilia).

I like what Ive seen of both so far but neither of them has really got me hooked. I think I'm about 10 hours into each but haven't really touched either of them for a week or so...

I was at a similar point with Dragons Dogma when I started Ni no Kuni, should probably give that more time as well.

Getting back into Fire Emblem: Awakening, after putting ~50 hours into my hard/classic file I've restarted because I can't remember for the life of me how I was building my team.

I also started playing Etrian Odyssey IV. I've found that the pacing has slowed right down though as I'm approaching the third floor of the first large dungeon, mostly due to the amount of grinding that seems to be needed to progress.

I will say it was amusing at times when AI-controlled Akihiko would go nuts on an enemy set chaining super effective attacks.

Speaking of P3 FES, What would you people consider the best party possible? Right now I have Main, Mitsuru, Yukari, and Aigis for physical. I just picked it back up since I have been relatively busy and was wondering if my party is sufficient.

I've been on a ff kick lately. First I got ff5 iOS ok sale and beat it then I got ffx for vita and beat that now I'm playing ff6 on iOS.

Dragon Quest V, DS remake, with an online guide. I'm three-quarters done. Very Traditional, but scratches the itch. Party system is fun, graphics are charming, story is not amnesia based. Really hoping DQ7 comes out stateside, as well as Rocket Slime 3.

I wonder how I should approach party management in Dragon Quest V. Should I change monsters in my party regularly akin to the SMT games or just stick to the ones I like?

Tales of Xillia.

Soon I'll be starting up Disgaea D2, and I have Tales of Symphonia Chronicles and FFX/X-2 HD Remaster on pre-order to add to that backlog.

My first few playthroughs, way back when, I experimented with monsters. Subsequent playthroughs I had my go to monsters I preferred. I found it much more fun to just mess with as many as you can your first outing.

Just finished second chapter of Neptunia 2, that was one long chapter, like really long.
About to start my replay of SO4, long overdue too.

I just deleted Breath of Fire 3 due to the frustration with the well mini-game

you shouldn't have, BoF 3 is a great game.

Each dungeon section of levels features a mix of enemies that are weak against certain elements, and generally speaking just a couple elements. So for instance if you find out the enemies in a section are mostly weak against fire and electricity, you might put in the MC, Akihiko (elec), Junpei (fire), and whoever your healer is. Disabling enemies with the right elemental attacks is a very important strategy for not getting your ass handed to you. So the "best party possible" is based on whatever enemies you're currently facing.

I know, I really liked the game, up until that frustrating well mini-game. I guess I don't have much patient for it anymore.

Currently playing FF XIII on PS3
i doubt i can call this a jrpg tho

5 hours into it and i´m kinda tired of running forward all the time.

I'm about 17 hours into Tales of Xillia and I love it. It's the first Tales game I've played since Tales of Phantasia for GBA which I wasn't interested in enough to finish. The story is cliche/cheesy/whatever but it's good enough and I'm enjoying the character interactions a lot. My favorite character is
Alvin. His constant betrayals are starting annoy me though!
. The battle system is really fun.
