What made Fire Emblem:Awakening such a huge success?

Waifus.

Honest Answer: Still had that classic Fire Emblem gameplay, but allowed more options to the player in terms of difficulty so it didn't scare away new comers to the series. Tons of content, a decent story, and a fun class system all make up what is a great game. But also Waifus

In part, this gorgeous bundle.

Will always be salty about not owning this.

Another thing that got me was the fact we could have a whole bunch of people from older Fire Emblem games. I'm sure some people who never heard of Fire Emblem until Smash Bros. Melee thought that Marth and Roy were from the same game. Well now was your chance to have them fight together or against each other in the same game.

Yeah it's real impressive how they don't have any personality and reuse existing models

Some people might using it as a "joke" answer, but I do honestly believe that Fire Emblem walking so bravely into the "Waifu" territory played a huge part into making it a success.

They have their own games, why would they need to hog the spotlight and be important to the plot in this game?

Honestly you're asking for way too much. Just look at how many damn characters they added.

I'm thankful enough for them paying attention to the past games even if they are reusable models.

Is the idea that the series was supposed to be shelved with Awakening in the OP an actual thing? I always thought the series had fairly relative success before.

Lemme take just a moment to say that while I loved the game, and I didn't mind aspects of her character, I will forever hate Nowi's design and inclusion as a mother unit in the game. There's just no excuse for that kind of character.

Having said that, a lot of the other characters in the game were enjoyable even though they weren't particularly deep. For instance, I don't think there was much to Gregor, but the guy is one of my favorite's because he's a riot.
Is nowi's costume design stupid? Most probably yes. I don't see a problem of including her as a mother character in the game though. I actually applaud Nintendo for even keeping that in game for the western release, lol.

I feel that if Nowi had a better costume design, there wouldn't be all these awkward feelings when pairing her up with someone in the game.

What I want to know is, how do girls in general feel about Nowi? I think that for the most part, they are OK with the character. I know for fact that if I showed this game to my sister and told her this character is able to marry this selection of men, she would go "oh, OK"
I think she may also be interested in the game, in general.

How am I asking for a lot? Considering I paid money for Roy and Marth, yknow, the characters you posted, I would expect some more work done than just something a character creator can make.

But I guess intellgent systems spent all the dlc production money on hiring crappy guest artists and the janitor to write up a shoehorned plot

I don't know what spot pass has to do with this.

The demo and the great gameplay.

Waifus had nothing to do with it and are an embarrassing aspect to the game that I endure to enjoy everything about it that is good.

Honestly, and not to belittle the awesomeness that is Fire Emblem, a very large factor in this games Success was probably Smash Bros.

People will play anything when they love a Character and the Fire Emblem Characters are huge favorites in Smash Bros. Personally, I think it's awesome that the popularity of Characters could be enough to bring a whole new audience to a genre. I am hugely excited to see what Hyrule Warriors does for Musous.

This was actually my very first Fire Emblem. I tried the Wii one but just couldn't get into it.

Awakening just clicked with me. I really really liked it and I've actually completed it twice! Awesome game and it's really fun!

Casual mode was domething I liked too.

I don't know what I am talking about, but I think a contributing factor is that 3DS owners were hungry for good games, and the platform was only beginning its stride at the time.

I was posting that to show all the characters they added to the game. Though it does have something to do with this because :gasp: you could get those characters... for free!

It was a high quality game, that's all. Nintendo put a lot of effort into making the best Fire Emblem they could, the graphics, gameplay, plot/characters, DLC, Streetpass feature, they were all very robust.

Wow, a whole lot of good that does when your initial post was only about the DLC characters which were...not free! (Well Marth was but only for a very short time)

You're posting a list of mostly generic units that they added to the game.

If youre referring to Paralogue characters, those were already on the card and just a marketing gimmick of "free characters every week". All the spotpass stuff is actually.

I'd say Waifu explains Japan (but maybe not even that much) but outside of that it being a good first party game and a Fire Emblem without offputting difficulty and decent graphics* helped it.

*-Things which really hurt PoR, RD and SD.

Fire Emblem was a tropey waifu game from the very first game on the NES.
But self insert stories ended with fanfiction and....romhacks in those days rather than being part of the game.

Fanservice and accessibily were important factors i think.

This thread reminds me i have to continune my first playthrough( stopped several months ago) with 100 h already played (grinding for sons and daughters quests).

Never played such type of games but once i understood the mechanics it just clicked me a lot, it's a shame that a lot of people on the internet remember this game only because of the waifus and not because of how actually fun it is.

I can only assume it being a first party Nintendo game and all that comes with that was the primary factor in this tbh.

I stopped playing the game because of her.

I was bored and went to Gamestop and decided to buy it on a whim. Loved it so much that I decided to play all the GBA ones and the one on the gamecube (tried the SNES one and hated it).

And I would never shut the fuck up about how good it was to other people with a 3DS

Actually playing the game, Nowi doesn't bother me as much as I thought she would. It's still a bad element but I think the localization team made it more tolerable.

This is why permadeath is great, her and the annoying child healer you get (that arrives as a Valkyrie/mounted healer) were sent off to die as soon as they could in my campaign. Noone ever mentioned them again. Apart from the end sequence :D

Combination of casual mode, the hype from being released in Japan and finally getting it a year later and the fact that it has a lot of appeal to girls as well.

Y-you monster!!

well for me i really liked the character designs im a fan of the artists work and it was fire emblem which was probably the 2nd video game series i was introduced to as a kid next t pokemon so series has some weight with me lol.

also i personally like nowi :T i wasnt really bothered by her design (but i can see where the costume will turn off a lot of people that and the whole loli thing) for me though what made her stand out was her conversations with the cast (pretty much what cemented my enjoyment out of the characters) I dont know what she was like in the japanese version but when i played and read her dialogues with various characters, she always seemed to be the most happy and seemed to always go about her day without getting worried about the wars and just being generally curious about the world shes in lol

aside from that i also like the infinite exp and skills system as well as the class change system i liked the fact i had a bit more control over my characters and that i could make them super broken death machines :P and i did like the whole marriage thing to me it was something i havent seen in a fire emblem game (as the games ive played only implied it) and i liked the dual system despite its flaws .....holy hell this is long sorry :T

Saw a video review and loved the artstyle, CG cutscenes were ace and heard that it was a little easier than previous games so picked it up without hesitation. So in short the production values were a huge selling point and the presentation of it. The publicity, marketing and reviews were damn good too.

Loved every second of it and found my waifu in Tharja too <3
Can't wait for the next one + hoping it's on Wii U (not the cross over one either).

Might start a new playthrough after finally finishing the Mass Effect trilogy this week.

For me, good story and characters, and nice easy, casual difficulty option for people like myself who aren't really in to SRPGs. While having the harder difficulties for the hardcore fans.

Tharja.
Definitely Tharja.

Also, being able to customize your own hero is a big plus, for me at least.

Oh, did I mention Tharja?
Because Tharja.

Is the idea that the series was supposed to be shelved with Awakening in the OP an actual thing? I always thought the series had fairly relative success before.

Yeah the series wasn't doing so hot, so they almost shelved it:

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/05/25/fire-emblem-awakening-was-almost-the-last-game-in-the-series/

Also, it's kinda funny looking back, since SMTxFE was announced before the game even released in the west, so it did well enough in Japan alone to make the series survive

I bought it because I like the genre but hated perma death. I'm pretty terrible at strategy games but I like the story of Fire Emblem so being able to go through without the added stress of perma death made the experience more enjoyable to me.

I tried other Fire Emblem games and fizzled out when certain crucial characters died.

Also: Waifus

I hope the next game actually matches back up to the series best. I need something on the level of 4, 7, 9, or 10.

I don't know if anyone touched on this, but I would say the success of Xcom and people's nostalgia for Final Fantasy Tactics (even if they don't play the same) created a perfect storm of interest in this game.

Just something on the Scale of 4 again would be nice. SNES game and it had the biggest maps in the series, often spanning multiple missions. Really liked IV

Good marketing, and of course the quality of the game that led to positive word of mouth.

And to think that Fire Emblem was exclusive to Japan until some years ago. Sometimes these series just need a little marketing push to be successful in the West. Xenoblade comes to mind too, in a smaller scale.
