What optional quests have you tried many times but never completed?

My 10-year old self playing Syndicate.

Last mission - Atlantic Accelerator - done. One left - Urugway, an escort mission.

Tried 20 times, never done it.

There was also similar shit in Tie-Fighter, can’t remember which one but I got past that.

That’s to all the escort missions out there:

Collecting feathers for your mum in AC2.

I'd let that bitch pray next to her bed for the rest of eternity before doing any of that crap. And for what? A cape that immediately gives you max wanted level? What kind of a bullshit reward is that? Fuck off Ubisoft.

This extends to every other collectable hunt bullshit in all of their other games, to be honest. Designed to waste your time.

Do you know that in Far Cry Blood Dragon, the protagonist had some hilarious reference towards all the feather and flag collection nonsense, its gold

I remember the line was something like "I hope I don't have to collect any f#!king feathers/flags..." when you are doing the TV and Movie collecting quest. I also vaguely remember he had some dialogue complaining whoever comes up with these quest deserve a bullet in their head

The last mission in NSMBU where you have to finish the level without touching anything that isn’t a platform. No coins, no power ups, and of course, no enemies.

Majora’s Mask, there was a massive quest that spanned the entire three days and involved many precise steps, and at the end there was a reward (a mask?) that you had to collect as it moved past on a conveyor belt.

First time I tried it I couldn’t pick up the prize and it just went past and fell down a hole into some lava. Second time, same thing. Third time - well there was no third time, I never played the damned shitty game again.

You reminded me of Zodiac Spear bullshit in FFXII, which was an obvious attempt to sell fucking strategy guides.
For those that don’t know: a powerful weapon you get in a specific treasure chest ONLY IF you leave certain chests up till that moment closed, some open. Impossible to do without a guide.

Any mission where I have to watch a cut scene for 5 minutes, driving across half the map listening to some guy in the passenger seat waffling on for another ten minutes, get to my destination, start shooting, get killed by the first enemy and respawn back on the pavement miles away and have to do the whole mission all over again. Basically, any GTA mission. Fuck that.

I don’t mind that so much because you often get different dialogue the second time.

Feathers in Assassins Creed 2.......i would collect them as I was going through the game and towards the end of the game I told myself I will go all in and actually collect them all......got bored and finished the game......again I told myself collect these fuckers....got bored again and basically never got that achievement and havent looked back.

Not really a side mission.
Halo LASO Solo.

Fuck that shit, im too old for this shit.

The Stones of Barenziah / Unusual Gems in Skyrim.

I even play with a mod that puts markers on every stone, and 11 1/2 years later I've never once completed that quest.

Gravity Rush 2 - Raven's Choice.
Almost finished it, but couldn't pass where enemies coming at this arc and you are supposed to protect it by yourself.
After many hours, I just gave up because it's too frustrating for me.

Which means, yeah. Generally the "guarding" missions in many games - I just don't like it personally. I normally have no issues of clearing it (say, to protect Ashley in OG RE4) - but that fire fighting episode in GR1, missile episode in GR2 were somewhat frustrating for old man like me. But that Raven's Choice' guarding mission was way too hard. :(

That's actually technically not true. There's a second place where you can get it but it's a stupidly rare drop (< 1%)

This is a really good question. The first thing that came to mind is the challenge missions in Vanquish, specifically the secret sixth mission. Basically the game drops an entire army of robots on you and expects you to survive. I've attempted this thing across two different platforms at total of probably 5 times, spending days just attempting a 3-5 minute mission over and over and over, dying each time.
I watched YouTube videos with strategy breakdowns, but no amount of practice seems to get me through the mission. I imagine it would be even harder in my older age now.
