Yeaaah. Midgar was the only part of FFVII I liked. But I really liked it a lot. They totally should have made the whole game within Midgar and just have had you explore a big city rather than a world.Yoshichan said:Without a single doubt:

Vagrant Story, easily. First, the optional attract screen intro with the most badass line in the game (I am the reinforcements.) followed by an incredibly well-paced playable opening credits sequence. Fantastic music, fantastic cutscene direction, fantastic writing. It's an amazingly great hook.
The entire world ends in SMT Nocturne's first ten minutes, come to think of it.
That's a hard act to follow.
Persona 4.
Although most people don't like it, I loved the 3-hour long introduction to the characters, the plot and the setting. It's like "first an anime movie to set up everything, and then we drop you in the middle".

The whole Midgar section of the game was awesome. Just a great setting with memorable music.

Fuu said:Same here, I don't care if it's overrated by the internet. Very memorable, makes you feel like you're part of something big right from the start and it gets you on the edge of your seat without downtime.
DMeisterJ said:Yep. Definitely the best. I so feel like replaying this right now.
Acquiescence said:Can't argue with that. The whole of Midgar still feels like such an 'event'.
chaosblade said:Yeah, FF7 and Midgar for this exact reason. That was the best part of the game, in my opinion.
crowphoenix said:I may hate Final Fantasy 7 with a passion, but it's hard to argue that it had one of the most impressive openings I've played.
Gromph said:I agree this post.
PooBone said:For me, the first thing that came to mind was FF7.
MetatronM said:I just remember Midgar feeling so epic and massive compared to anything that came before it that I was honestly a little dumbfounded when you actually LEFT Midgar. I mean, you spent HOURS there at the start of the game, which was completely unlike any RPG I can recall seeing before it. It was such massive city that made for such an interesting setting with different diverse areas and so on that I had honestly started to believe that they had ditched the globetrotting of previous titles for an epic urban adventure.
That that was just the FIRST town and not THE town was pretty awe-inspiring at the time.
For all of VII's various faults, its opening act is really a work of RPG genius.
Magicpaint said:Agree with all the FFVII mentions. Just does a really good job of sucking you into the world. Loved every second.

Opening up with this - Bombing Mission
Great atmosphere throughout midgar - Anxious Heart
Awesome Boss battles - Boss Theme
The Shinra Tower - Shinra Theme
Finally I thought the journey was over - Ahead on Our Way/Kalm Town
TheExodu5 said:Best opening act: Final Fantasy VII.
decoyplatypus said:I know it's obvious, but FFVII's opening really is that good. The mission and the stakes are clear (though obviously they'll be more complicated later) and compelling right from the start, the music is effective, and the sense of location is strong.
flintstryker said:As overrated as the game has become over the years i would still have to say Final Fantasy 7, the opening was freaking incredible and i have yet to play an rpg with as good an opening thus far.too bad it was all downhill once that was over
Zomba13 said:Has to be FF7s. It drops you right into the action.
Rad- said:Best opening act: FFVII
H_Prestige said:If the entire Midgar part of FFVII counts as an opening act, then that is my choice. By far the best part of the game, it could almost be a full game on its own. Love the atmosphere and the fast pace. The finale at Shinra Tower is epic.
BlazingDarkness said:DAMN First post nails it as usual
Nothing comes close for me, such an iconic memorable opening
SneakyStephan said:FF7 getting off the train as the cgi turns to real time was frigging magical, nothing will ever top it.
The entire midgar act was incredible, an contained adventure, it only got better as the game let you out into the world.
Keikoku said:FFVII is an instant classic, probably the best one, and one of the few RPG with a great intro.
thefro said:FF7's first act (Midgar) is pretty much perfect.
A Huge Battleship said:Tried really hard not to say FFVII, but it basically has to be FFVII.
Ferrio said:Hate to be a broken record, but FFVII by a large margin.
Great CG opening (especially at the time), get instantly thrust into a mission with music that makes you know shit is going down fast.
MikeE21286 said:easily FFVII for me

No drawn-out expository setup, tutorials, or hand holding. You're just thrown into an awesome multi-path, multi-task mission.
Yes, agreed. The intro is amazing and the whole Midgar section is fast paced and awesome.Yoshichan said:Without a single doubt:

Best opening to any RPG. No saving the world bullshit, cuz the world is already dead! My vote definitely goes for this one.cj_iwakura said:The entire world ends in SMT Nocturne's first ten minutes.
This. Such an awesome transition.GCX said:
i think the beginning is pretty mediocre (mephits and extremely weak duergar = boring). However, the 1370 DR Massacre of Waukeens Promenade that happens right after exiting is soooo good. <3 David WarnerBeeDog said:Baldur's Gate 2, when you wake up in the opening dungeon without any real recollection of what the fuck is going on. At the very least you immediately get acquainted with one of the best gaming villains ever in a game, Irenicus. His voice actor is one of the best badasses ever.

GhaleonQ said:But, really, it's the VII one that I don't get. VIII's middle of the pack for me. VII is the cliche; IX is the same thing done with charm, originality, aesthetic perfection, attention to story (i.e., the tie to the ending), et cetera. VII is something everyone's seen before in other media, but with bad dialogue and art direction.
