Y'all ready for GLOW?

I hate myself for grouping two female led shows together like this, but I think Orange is the New Black might have killed my hype for GLOW. IDK. I'm kinda burnt out on Netflix shows in general. The ones written for binge just bleed into each other and sometimes don't really have distinctive starts and finishes in the episodes. They just slap a cliffhanger on the end. Makes it all look incredibly cheap when I'm seeing shows like Better Call Saul do their thing.

I hate you all. Especially Ratsky.

Peak TV has turned us all into dead souls lol

I'm probably just being a curmudgeon and will gush over it once its out. Alison Brie and Marc Maron are honestly enough to get a watch out of me.

Pft, forget what Netflix is dumping this Friday. USA premieres Playing House: S3 Friday night and then the whole season is available on-demand on Saturday.

I definitely plan on adding it to the rotation, although I'm already behind on a lot of shows. The early reviews have been really good, I used to be a big wrestling fan, plus Alison Brie.

Also the fact the episodes are around 30 mins helps out a lot.

Shit, really? That alone has increased my hype 10 fold.

Same here. I was already planning to watch it for sure, but I thought it had hour long episodes.

Good thing I finished the new season of Orange last night so I'm ready.

It's actually a pretty slow summer for TV so far. I'm interested to check out Snowfall and that's about it. I guess I'll hate-watch Preacher.

It's a slow summer, which is fine since spring was swamped and I didn't catch or finish a lot of shows from then. Gotta watch most of The Expanse and Legion still, and I haven't gotten around to starting the latest seasons of Samurai Jack, Hap & Leonard, Catastrophe, and Sense8 yet.

Only remaining shows on my list for the summer, unless more get dates:
Game of Thrones
Playing House
Room 104
Snowfall

And I'll have to watch The Defenders because my girlfriend worked on it, but I've seen all of 1.5 episodes of Marvel shows previously.

My biggest problem with Orange is the New Black is it doesn't tell stories that deserve a thirteen hour season. I like GLOW's format (10 episodes - 30 mins each) because you can finish it in six hours.

And I think it would be smart for most Netflix shows to have shorter seasons. For example, Better Call Saul is an extremely well-made show because it's only ten episodes per season. (versus 13 episodes of House of Cards)

The Mist TV series premiere is tonight. Anyone going to watch it?

Reviews are tepid, so probably not.

Better Call Saul would be great even with 13 episodes though because the writers aren't writing "one big movie!!11!" like they do on House of Cards.

Slapped together an OT for The Mist. Pilot episode was okay. I wonder how long until it goes Under the Dome ridiculous.

Me on Wednesday: I don't have time for this GLOW nonsense!!!!

Me on Saturday: I'm on Episode 7 and wondering if the girls will be able to sell Liberty Belle as a proper babyface.

Lack of Ratsky in the Glow thread bums me out, show was fantastic.

Come back to the light Ratsky.

So in the summer doldrums (hah) why not spend some time catching up with the best tv of the year so far? Because TV is incredibly creative right now, unlike the headlines of these articles.
note: I've only highlighted the new shows of 2017, read the articles for the complete lists

Vulture: The Best TV Shows of 2017 (So Far)
Big Little Lies (HBO)
The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
One Day at a Time (Netflix)
The Young Pope (HBO)

AV Club: The best TV of 2017 so far
American Gods (Starz)
Big Little Lies (HBO)
Brockmire (IFC)
Dear White People (Netflix)
Downward Dog (ABC)
Feud (FX)
The Good Place (NBC)
Great News (NBC)
The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
Harlots (Hulu)
I Love Dick (Amazon)
Legion (FX)
One Day At A Time (Netflix)
The Young Pope (HBO)

The Telegraph: The best TV shows of 2017 (so far)
Broken (BBC One)
The Handmaid’s Tale (Channel 4/Hulu)
Paula (BBC Two)
Three Grils (BBC One)
I Love Dick (Amazon)
King Charles III (BBC Two)
Home (BBC One)
Babs (BBC One)
Little Boy Blue (ITV)
American Gods (Amazon/Starz)
Born to Kill (Channel 4)
Decline and Fall (BBC One)
This Country (BBC Three)
SS-GB (BBC One)
Legion (Fox/FX)
Taboo (BBC One)
The Moorside (BBC One)

Variety: The Best TV Shows of 2017 (So Far)
One Day at a Time (Netflix)
American Gods (Starz)
Dear White People (Netflix)
The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
The Keepers (Netflix)
Legion (FX)
Mary Kills People (Lifetime)
National Treasure (Hulu/Channel 4)
Shots Fired (Fox)
The Young Pope (HBO)

The Handmaid's Tale is (deservedly) the only new show on all four lists, though in fairness The Young Pope aired last year in the UK so it's not an entirely fair comparison. Still, you should definitely watch The Handmaid's Tale, if nothing else for Elisabeth Moss (and Alexis Bledel).

Ack, too much TV. I was looking forward to a brief respite before a few more shows kick off.

It's all definitely piling up. I have about four new Netflix seasons to power through, I'm four behind on Twin Peaks, and I fell behind on so many others from back in March and April. It's a nice problem to have, but it's still too much!

Hot damn! And a two hour premiere, too! Get out of here, July, I want August already!

(All the insane movies coming in July will make it pass quickly.)

Out of the ones I haven't seen on those lists (and I've seen a bunch), the only one I actually feel compelled to catch up on National Treasure.

Laugh tracks doesn't mean that something is bad.

Shit, my bad. Thought I had edited out all the documentaries, to save space not because I hate them, there are several more docus on the Telegraph list in particular.
It's a true crime affair along the lines of The Jinx or How To Make a Murderer but a lot less compelling than either of those.

One Day At A Time definitely has its moments. I didn't love it, but did end up liking it, and can see why people could! You should give it a try.

Twin Peaks!

Oh yeah. I forgot she was involved with that. Has that revival been good? I sneak peeks at reviews and they're all just people trying to piece the show together

It's...wildly different from anything anyone expected it to be. I'm a bit mixed on it, but it's also a really hard thing to pin down because it's liked 18 different things at once. My overall thoughts on it will depend on how the rest of the season plays out.

Uproxx is giving me 404:s no matter what page I'm visiting. Dammit, I wanted to get my fill of "The post-apocalyptic adventures of Bob Benson".
Don't make me actually watch the show now. (though I probably will, after I'm done catching up with the actually good TV of the year so far)
Oh.
I so wanted this to not suck, I like Naomi Watts, hell I even like Sam Taylor-Johnson (or well, I liked Nowhere Boy). Maybe I'll check it out anyways. Maybe.
Following the tease, here's the official trailer.
Looks pretty good, reminds me quite a bit of Inside No. 9... like it's almost the exact same premise as Inside No. 9. The only difference being that Inside No. 9 isn't confined to a specific room but rather behind a door marked 9.

That Mormon episode is like a stern elder away from being a gay porn... not that I would know anything about the surprisingly prolific sub-genre that is Mormon gay porn.

Its the best thing I've seen all year, on film or tv.

and naomi watts is hilarious in it. shame her movie roles are kinda crap as of late though.

also Snowfall is getting really mediocre reviews but I still feel obligated to give the pilot a shot. I've enjoyed a few john singleton movies and the subject matter is pretty interesting as well.

I plan on giving the pilot a shot, too. FX makes some of the best shows on television, I'll give it a chance no matter what.
