What the hell happened to Crash Bandicoot?

I think the post-PS1 games get a worse rap than they deserve. I haven't played any of the spin-offs, but the main ones, including the GBA ones, have all been pretty decent. Not great, but I enjoyed them.

I never got the Crash love. I swear it was all just the advertisements, since they were pretty awesome commercials. Even stuff like Crash of the Titans didn't feel much different from what I played of Crash 1-3.
just random animal and attitude, formula for sonic basicallyu

Didn't like any of the post-PS1 console titles really (first one was alright I guess, but didn't it have like four hour long loading screens full of static?), but the two (first two?) GBA ones are pretty much as good as the PS1 games, just a lot more side scrolling segments from what I remember.

Played a lot of the first one again on my Micro last year for some reason I don't remember. But it was perfect for a little platforming fix playing a level or two. (Or playing a level and then going back for the gems.)

I picked up Mind over Mutant for my daughter last christmas on the PSP and was very impressed with the game.

The graphics are excellent, the gameplay is good too.

I thought it was better than the Rachet games on the PSP and as good as Daxter.

I assume the PS2 version is equally solid. This has co-op!

I guess it is too easy and a little short, but if you want a solid platformer then it does the job well.
My cousin bought the game for his daughter (Wii version). Even though it looks simplistic and plays simplistic, she was really enjoying it.

Seems like a great game for kids which even "hardcore" gamers can enjoy.

I wish they would bring some of those mascot games.

All they have now is Ratchet & Clank. Yeah, it is a good game. But I really want a platform game . . . not another a gunfest. If I want guns, I'll play Halo, Rainbow 6 1&2, Gears of War 1&2, GRAW 1&2, Killzone, Uncharted 1&2, . . . and the tons of other shooters.

I'm still completely dumbfounded that there has been no good 3D platformer this gen except for Super Mario Galaxy. Consider all the money SMG made, you'd think other publishers/developers would jump into that market. Why haven't they?

(No Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts doesn't count . . . that is more of a race game.)

You're not alone.

Mind Over Mutant actually looks half-decent. I might pick it up after I finish A Crack in Time.

Crash Bandicoot was my most beloved videogame series when I was a kid. After CTR, I got Crash Bash and beat it, but I didn't enjoy it as much as CTR. Then my brother got the first PS2 Crash. I beat it and then never touched it or the series again.

I loved that video at the end of CTR with a 100% completion score. I think the original Crash games are some of the very few games in which I've attempted or achieved 100% completion (except for Warped with 105%). Trying to get that last five percent in Warped was a bitch, but it felt so good after getting it.

I sure am glad Naughty Dog went on to do other things. I'm sure loving my Uncharted. It would be fun to see them do another Jak game. I'd hate to see them pull any resources off of Uncharted three to make it happen though.

They've actually thrown more crappy non ND built sequels out now then there are original ND built products.
The following is an abrigdged version of what wikipedia had on the subject:

Crash 1-3 all followed a tried and tested platforming mode and well as having exciting chase stages (also frustrating :P ). They were decent though . Crash team racing was like diddy kong racing on N64 except actually fun. I'd argue it's better then the majority of mario kart games even.

The first non-ND game was some crappy party game - crash bash . It was pretty much garbage from what I recall.

Travellers tales was then handed the task of doing a crash bandicoot 4 for the at the time nex generation consoles. I don't recall it being recieved that well as it didn't do anything new or better then the first 3 aside from having an engine based on the ps2 architecture.

There were then a handful of portable games released ranging from a crash/spyro cross over to a coupe of standard fare 2d platformers.

That same developer(vicarious visions) made a ps2 sequel to crash team racing called crash nitro cart but much like crash 4 it just wasn't as well recieved on the newer consoles.

Finally in what could technically be dubbed crash bandicoot 5 : twinsanity , you could play as the bad guy or the good guy. As I recall this entry was recieved a bit better then wrath of cortex because travellers tales atleast tried something different.

A couple years later they rebooted the series as something more similar to Kameo Elements of power then a traditional crash game and so far we've got 2 entries out - Crash of the Titans and more recently Mind over mutant. Both by the same developer.

There are also , again, a handful of portable games to sift through.

To answer this thread though I'd say crash bandicoot went wrong as soon as universal decided to continue without ND, kind of like what happened with the handful of spyro games released after the 3rd one.

How would you update Crash to be interesting in the modern day? I don't think you could, really. It was fun back in the day, but I don't want someone to try and reboot it. It's not like he was an amazingly strong character or anything.

Crash 3 was the first game I bought for my PS as I had little moneys at the time and was rocking the SNES for quite a while, some would say way too long.

Then that abomination by Traveller's Tales came out on the PS2. And.....THE LOAD TIMES HOLY GOD!

2 was always my favourite as a kid. As far as I can remember, it wasn't on the EU PSN when I last looked however which was disappointing. :(

Crash Team Racing is the best Crash game ever made, though. Fact.

I think both ND and Insomniac wanted to move on in new directions. (I remember early Jak interviews and even CTR interviews where the ND guys basically said they were sick of Crash.) And Universal didn't want a couple of high visibility IPs go to waste.

So they did what any good company does and ran the IPs into the ground.

Crash was from the tail end of the era of mascot platformers. I don't think it's even possible to recreate that era. Heck, most of the characters from that era that are still around have change drastically. Crash, Sonic, Spyro, etc.

Mario's the only one who's gone unchanged.

This thread makes me want to play some Crash Bandicoot.

If I were to grab one of the PS1 games off PSN, which would you guys recommend?
Crash 2 is the best and most well-rounded of the bunch, but I'd also recommend checking out the original if you're in the mood for a challenge. Don't bother with Warped unless you like platformers with poorly implemented minigames and nonexistent difficulty.

...Minigames?

The horrible vehicle sections felt like minigames. *shudder*

The only time Crash was still fun when he wasn't running around was the levels with the polar bear. I loved riding that little fella.

I believe ND was asked what they thought of Crash Bandicoot these days and one executive replied that it felt like your daughter was doing porn. :lol

It's just a case of the franchise being given to other, less competent developers. Just look at Spyro, it was the same thing when Insomniac moved on. I just hope that someone somewhere pulled the plug on Crash so he can rest in peace.

I have to agree that the last two Crash games were actually pretty decent. And the first PS2 game was quite good - it just suffered from some really fucked up load times.

crash :(

it was my first ps1 games ( ithink my first 3d game with tekken 1 )

it was so freaking awesome

im glad ND are working on something bigger and better but im sad seeing crash die a horrible death :(
