What the hell happened to Crash Bandicoot?

I felt like Crash 1 was good, 2 was great, and 3 was a minor step down... most people liked 3 best though. Gaming was evolving at the time, transitioning more towards shooters, and it was time for Naughty Dog to move on. I know it wasn't entirely their choice, but only good things happened from there.

If I were to grab one of the PS1 games off PSN, which would you guys recommend?

Personally I'd say Crash 3, but it seems I'm in the minority on that one. Crash Team Racing is also good (and far better than any Mario Kart game).

As for that first Crash game for PS2, it was decent enough, but holy fucking kebab, the load times, THE LOAD TIMES.

After that Crash went completely down the shitter as far as I am concerned.

I liked (begrudgingly) Crash 1,2,and 3 after trying them. Crash 3 has the most refined visuals and variety of types of levels, I'd say. Crash 2 is probably my overall favorite. And Crash 1 is the most challenging, although with all the secrets in Crash 2 there is ample challenge there , too.

If you were to start with a Crash, I'd start with part 2 which I believe is the highest quality one. But really, if you think you'll play them to completion, get all three and enjoy.

BUMP. because this was the newest thread I found about Crash bandicoot. And I've been playing the PS1 games and they are awesome.

I played a bunch of Crash 1. Caf Jr grew up playing CB games, so he was interested more in reliving the games, and I just watched him finish CB1 getting every secret level, every key, every gem. I've always thought the secret gems concept was a great way to make the game live longer - you have to beat levels breaking every crate (and of course finding every crate) and not dying to earn a gem. Then, in the final Cortex battle stage, each of these found gems appears progressively across a void, and once you've found them all, you can leap across them like stepping stones and see the 'real' ending. We never saw it until tonight - Crash finds his grilfriend (with a body like Pam Anderson) and a huge island bird. They basically mount the bird and fly off the island, and you get to see what happened to each of the main characters.

Oh yeah - Crash Bandicoot can be maddeningly hard! Unlike any of the sequels.

So we started playing the much improved Crash 2. Did you know that Clancy Brown (voice of Lex Luthor and Mr. Krabs, also played in Highlander and Shawshank redemption) does the voice of Cortex?! We just realized it and confirmed it online. Wow!

I think we rented Twinsanity and Crash 4 on Xbox years ago. Not quite as special as any of the PS1 originals, but I think we are going to get them again on the cheap. that is all for now.

I remember going back to one of the early levels to farm lives since you could rack up like four 1-ups on one stage from a straight playthrough in order to continue through the harder levels chasing gems.

I can't decide what's worse, the fall of Sonic or the fall of Crash.

Sonic comes out with a slew of awful games (Heroes, Shadow, 06) and it's sort of devolved into the running gag of the gaming industry. It's still a prominent name which is why every Sonic Unleashed or Sonic 4 is such a complete disappointment.

No one even gives a fuck about Crash anymore.

E: Wow at the thread necromancy.

even though its a crash thread id say sonic is worse just cause the fall was bigger. sure the ps1 crash games were popular but sonic was more popular/well known than mickey mouse in the 90's to just some chump also ran series, the character is still popular which maybe explains some sales. itd be kinda cool to see crash make a comeback with a pure platformer. i miss those. no mind control gimmicks give me something like a mario knockoff which is sorta a contradiction i know.

Crash 1 was only alright, Crash 2 was decent, Crash 3 was excellent, CTR was a better kart game than Mario.

This isn't in hindsight... this is exactly how I felt when the games came out.

I was actually pretty annoyed at the time that the Saturn had Nights, the 64 had Mario, and as a Playstation owner I was stuck with Crash :lol

Which of the first 3 Crash games is the best and which one should I buy on PSN? I've never played one of them before; should I just start with the first one?

Sony wanted a flagship mascot to guarantee market penetration.

the playstation was successful without having a flagship mascot because it appealed to teh matoor gamers, and the Sony brand was strong enought to carry it.

Crash was quietly forgotten about.

What happened to Spyro the Dragon? Are they still making games on that? The first one I remember being pretty good.

Actually it was the second and third Spyro games that were good, just like Crash :lol

Similar deal to Crash, only with Insomniac instead of Naughty Dog.

CTR is still me fav kart racer.(ok after weird Chocobo racing cuz it had more awesome weapon system lol)
But CTR had great tracks and it was so fun in multiplayer mode with 4 ppl! We used to play it every friday night.

Crash 2 is the best of the bunch. They all hold up relatively well though.

First Spyro is good. It has a nice simplicity that the third game loses. Although I love the entire trilogy. (And whatever GBA game it is that's good but I can't remember the name of.)

Also one of the first console games I can think of that made you want to look around and explore everywhere.
In that second level or whatever when you glide into the "background" and collect tons of gems up there.

Crash Team Racing is still THE best game ND developed (and best Kart racer for that matter). Uncharted 2 ain't got shit on CTR.
I almost support this. Have a strange fondness for Crash 2 though to not fully support it.

Always preferred Spyro to Crash, although I did like Warped.

But Spyro 2 and 3... beautiful. Spyro 1 was good also, but it was just finding its feet.

Never liked his look. Kinda looked like he had no head just a body with 2 eyes and a mouth, and I want to slap that fucking grin off his face also.

Crash 1 = greatness.
Crash 2 = good
Crash 3 = too many gimmicks.

Really, the best part of Crash 1 were the strictly 2d levels.

Activision needs to hire Wrestler/Big Fan guy to reboot Crash Bandicoot.

I looked at this post and the avatar and thought I was sleep posting or somebody hijacked my account lol.

Also Crash 1 was awesome, and whichever one you rode the effin polar bear cub down the mountaint....I loved that one. So much. Id restart that level just to ride that little dude down the mountain.

Crash, Spyro and Twisted Metal were some of my favorite "every day" PSX games. MGS1 and SH1 were when I wanted to really focus on the game.

People laugh at the Crash Mind Over Mutant boxart as if the characters in the Crash universe were ever well designed.

Evan Wells, Naughty Dog co-president, when asked what what he thought about the later Crash Bandicoot games from other developers:

"It's a little bit like watching your daughter do porn."

What's he talking about? The later Crash games weren't hot at all.

Crash 3, best of the trilogy IMO.

Crash was never important, exordinary good or "flagship material".

The first Crash Bandicoot sold 6.8 million, the second one sold 5.8 million and the third sold 5.7 million. These were all on Playstation only and they were all had positive reviews. So you're completely wrong.

Indeed.
Crash was even the Playstation's mascot back then

you know I never actually knew what a bandicoot was until just now

Yeah, me neither. Only loved the first one, all the sequels weren't nearly as much fun to me.

Crash was never important, exordinary good or "flagship material".

And this is just a flat out lie, like many say Crash WAS the Sony mascot back then, even had a cameo on the simpsons.

I don't get why this quote gets thrown around so much since it says nothing about the quality of the game. She could be the best porn actress around, its still going to be fucked up watching her.

Granted in this analogy, Crash isn't the best porn actress around but whatever.

Believe it or not, most parents would actually be embarrassed seeing there daughter do porn, he is ashamed to look at the games.

The quote still strikes me as him finding the edgiest way of saying "I never played them so I don't have a real opinion but I don't like the direction" to mask the fact he really doesn't have much of an opinion on them.
I mean it would make sense if the Crash games got as shitty as Sonic games have, but they're just average games.

Incredibly surprised that we haven't seen a new Crash in the past the end of 2008. I mean this is Activision we're talking about here.
