What the hell happened to Edward Norton?

He's starring in Birdman next year. The premise is, get this:

A washed up actor who once played an iconic superhero must overcome his ego and family trouble as he prepares to mount a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim past glory.

Well, here's his upcoming slate:

Down in the Valley (2005)
Set in the present-day San Fernando Valley, the project revolves around a delusional man who believes he's a cowboy and the relationship that he starts with a rebellious young woman.
(with Evan Rachel Wood, Bruce Dern, David Morse, Rory Culkin)

The Illusionist (2006)
Director Neil Burger's screen adaptation of Steven Millhauser's short story 'Eisenheim the Illusionist'. Eisenheim (Edward Norton) is a magician in early 1900's Vienna, who falls in love with a woman well above his social standing. When she becomes engaged to a Crown Prince, Eisenheim uses his powers to win her back and undermine the stability of the royal house of Vienna.
(with Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti)

The Painted Veil (2006)
A woman becomes dissatisfied with her marriage, as her husband favors of his research over time with her. An affair leads her on a journey of self-discovery, and her new dedication to fighting cholera brings her to the Far East.
(with Naomi Watts)

Motherless Brooklyn (2006)
"Motherless Brooklyn" is about Lionel Essrog, a detective with Tourette's Syndrome. When his mentor is murdered, he must go and find the killer.
(Norton is directing and adapting the novel)

I didn't realize how old this thread was until I saw this post and I figured it was some sort of esoteric joke.

Leaves of grass was great

I love Tim Blake nelson as well he deserves just as much praise

It seems him and Norton make a good team as well and should do more projects together

With the title Birdman, I'm almost disappointed that it's not a live action adaptation of Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law.

What kind of fucking sicko doesn't like Death To Smoochy? What is wrong with you OP? Are you a real people?

I'm rainbow fucking randolph!

...

That's some necro. If the OP has changed his views on this film in the last 8 years, I apologise profusely.

Sorry... I didn't even realise! Just I watch a film with an amazing performance (Primal Fear and American History X in particular) and just get sad by the wasted talent over the past 10 years :(

Fair enough if it was a result of the Hulk thing, shame he's a jerk too as he seems to do a lot of good stuff for the environment etc

I read some of the first posts in this thread and thought; 'those are some old movies and they say he's going to star in them'.

Then I looked at the date and now I feel stupid.

That terrible Hulk movie killed his career. The last film I saw him in he played twins where the one is a hillbilly and the other a city slicker.

Let's bring this thread back for the 10 year anniversary in a couple of years. I'm sure he won't have done anything decent by then.

After brilliant work in:

Primal Fear
American History X
Fight Club
and arguably, the 25th Hour

Norton has literally, fallen off the face of the earth. I realize he was in Kingdom of Heaven (which I haven't seen), but he doesn't seem to get a lot of press these days. Before the awful Death to Smoochy, Norton was really set to take reigns as the De Niro of the next generation.

For the love of god, someone give this guy a good role!

Hehe I thought Death to Smoochy was awesome :P

didn't he get blacklisted over the whole paramount italian job thing, and also that he's notoriously hard to work with? always demanding script rewrites and stuff? he's probably too smart for his own good, brilliant actor though...
Would he have made Avengers any better?

probably not, Ruffalo was good, but I like continuity in my comic movies. as much as I liked Cheadle and Gyllenhall better than Howard and Holmes their recastings still bug me.

That's what I understand - that he mailed in his performance in Italian Job to fulfill his contract and after that studios avoided him like the plague.

He was already having problems as early as American History X. The original director disowned the movie because of Norton's changes.

Norton fans should check out The Score. He stars with De Niro and Marlon Brando, and he's fucking fantastic in it. Not an amazing movie overall, but you're there for Norton's performance.

If American History X is more a product of Norton than Kaye, I'd say that's Norton's changes were probably a good thing.

Also, count me in the Death to Smoochy fan club. Oh we'll get you off that smack, oh yes we will!
