What the hell happened to Firefall?

I'm browsing through my discovery queue on Steam to get my sale cards when Firefall pops up with an "Overwhelmingly Negative" recent review score. Most of the top reviews are veteran players with hundreds or more hours now stating the developers have ruined the game.

I haven't followed this game outside of the occasional GiantBomb mention, but what the hell happened?

A bunch of reviews were made on June 22nd and 23rd, I imagine it's due to a bad patch or dev announcement.

Top Neg review is May 29th though, detailing removal of PvP and other features. So, patches prior to recently have been screwing something up, I guess?

This is really sad, I was in first closed betas and potential was huge, but then they began to change everything from mining to how Chosen attacks are going on. At one moment there were almost impossible find minerals on the map, but if you were lucky to find them, be sure there will be Chosen attack with 50+ mobs, some of them were able to kill player in 3-4 shots

looks like a bunch of bad changes to the game over recent times, plus this I found on reddit:

Hello and welcome to the 173rd Devtracker Weekly Round Up! So, getting up to about 18 days now without a single dev post, nothing on blogs, twitter, or facebook, and no abundance of holidays or anything to explain inactivity.

Suffice to say in the past one hundred and seventy two weeks, this is a first for not having any news for such period of time. The game is still up and servers are running, though the population in game is still rather low, so at least the game is still running but all I can really say is this doesn't seem good. If you got your tinfoil hats and "the end is nigh!" signs now's as good a time as any to dust them off.

Till next week, try watching cute videos of fluffy animals or something.

Unpopular/bad changes, apparent problems on the dev side, a dwindling player base, and now complete radio silence. Outlook not so good.

Game (nor the studio) seems to be long for this world. There was another round of layoffs a couple of weeks ago at Red 5.

That review kind of chronicles the life time of the game, PVP was removed before the game went open beta if I recall correctly.

Sounds like the pulled a Star Wars Galaxy-esque makeover recently that screwed everything up.

I played some of this game...a few years ago now I think it was? Wow. It was actually great at one time. Thought it could have competed with stuff like Borderlands.

A couple years ago I remember fire fall having huge displays at pax east 2013?) I never really knew what the game was about though, sucks that the game got wrecked

I always felt it suffered from a lack of cohesive direction, and wanting to be everything and anything at the same time. There was also this massive infatuation to be like Tribes [all hail supreme fps], and yet the game felt nothing like Tribes.

Perhaps that's similar to what happened with Titan.

Which is quite ironic as some parts of Firefall was spawned from prototype Titan.

It was lack of direction. They always tried to remake the game after a few months to no success. Constantly changing systems, gameplay instead of focusing on adding content. The Chinese release was their last real chance of success and they failed tremendously.

Right now they removed every EU server and moved everything to a single US server and we have had no patches or communication from the devs (but we do know what people are still leaving).

The game won't last much longer sadly...

Kind of sad that this is the legacy of the Project Offset engine... such a insane engine 10 years ago goes into oblivion.

This will go down as the worst managed game in history. APB has nothing on Firefall. I can't really recall how many times they have redone all the game systems, mechanics, crafting, etc...

They had this whole communication with the community to develop the game together thing, in which they spent too much time listening to the wrong people on their forums (or not listening to the right people?), which led them to try to redesign pretty much the whole damn game, which turned out being shitty because they listened to the wrong people, and then they repeated this cycle after realizing they listened to the wrong people. At least 3 or 4 times. Barely adding content in between and dropping the best ideas (No new battleframes, no seamless world, no pushing back the melding in a meaningful way, no epic invasions, etc.)

This was the first and last F2P game I would ever support with my money ($100 original founder) before its actual release. I basically paid money for a cool motorcycle instead of a cool videogame. They really only took this game out of closed beta because they needed money BAD after wasting so much doing nothing.

edit: and now they're shifting their focus on porting the game to mobile and PS4? Lmao, they will never learn I guess. They better be able to push out content extremely fast after porting or I don't see them standing a chance.

The best thing to come out of Firefall was when Mega64 showed up for their weekend fundraiser event thing (FirefallFest?) to do their public access Goth improv routine.

"Would you say that Firefall is the most gothic game, ever made?

The best part was watching it live on twitch and seeing the Firefall community completely not getting it and becoming very angry, absolutely fantastic.

But yeah literally the only thing good thing that came out of this smoking trash heap. Such a disappointment as well because the game had a lot of potential early on, I even bought one of those founders packs they had years ago, fuck Mark Kern for destroying this awesome concept.

Rather on focusing adding more content that the game world desperately needed, they decided to focus on the PVP/team e-sports aspect, which caused people to get bored of Firefall with no new world content coming out and bailed on it.

Man I read almost that entire Reddit post thinking this thread was about Firewatch. I was confused because I thought it was single a player game (and well received).

Genuine accomplishment on making TDM with jet boots a fucking chore.

Everyone say hello to the next "FireFall" CliffyB's LawBreakers.

CliffyB goes full gater when LawBreakers bombs. Book it.

I'm surprised this is still around. I remember having some fun with it, but it never became anything more than a shallow pool. The mismanagement behind it was obvious.
