Johnny Gioeli of Crush 40.
Guilty gear soundtrack. Generic guitar hard rock that never quite goes metal or anything really.
I usually think of it as 80s metal. Not like, death metal, but more like Iron Maiden or something.
Crush 40 definitely falls under this style. MGR's soundtrack takes some inspiration from it but isn't literally it.
"Never quite goes metal? Are we talking about the Guilty Gear which lifts stuff from Napalm Death?
Iron Maiden is NOT butt rock, they are the antithesis to dogshit like Poison. Brilliant, melodic, and intricate, without sacrificing power and heaviness.
Granted, I enjoy some Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown, Three Days Grace, and tolerate 1 Nickelback song.
I should clarify that I don't think "butt rock" is an inherently bad thing.
The term comes from a nationwide advertising campaign on hard-rock radio stations in the 1990s that used the tagline "Rock. Nothing but Rock." Listeners quickly changed that to "Nothing Butt Rock." Though it refers to anything played on hard-rock stations, it commonly is used to refer to 'hair-bands' or used by people to distinguish the 'bad' butt rock from the hard rock that they like.
That sounds about right, actually. I wonder what the etymology of "butt rock" is... singers who sound like butts? Cock rock is so-called for a very 'in your face' reason. You're probably thinking of cock rock, which some people use interchangeably with hair/glam stuff.

Speaking of Guilty Gear, I think Dokken's a good example of how you can be butt metal and not suck.

It's basically any rock or metal anyone doesn't like and wants to disparage.
There's no real definition for it.

Further proof that it refers to "rock that I don't like" is the multiple definitions in this very thread that often conflict with each other.
Any rock music you don't like.
