What the hell is it about Persona 4?

Why does everyone I introduce this game to love it, regardless of how much or little they like JRPGs?

First some context for why I'm starting this thread let me start at the beginning. I introduced 3 of my friends to Vita, and by extension Persona 4 golden. Now, one of them is an avid JRPG fan, one of them is a bit ADHD when it comes to slow games(with a wife, child and job to boot), the other pretty much considers gameplay=graphics>story. They all like RPGs to some extent, so I was only slightly surprised that all of them liked P4G. The person who loved it that caused me to write this thread, however, blew my fucking mind.

I play a large variety of games, including shooters. Now one of my friends who I play shooters with a lot and who constantly complains about Japanese games whenever they're brought up(Which is funny because his experience with Japanese games extends to Chromehounds(Which is one of his favorite games), Armored core, and a couple JRPGs a friend of his played while he was watching). He ended up buying a vita for remote play, suffice to say I told him not to get Persona 4, because it is a very japanese game with everything he complained about in it. He sees it for $20 can't resist, I expect him to give up in the first hour and talk about how trash the game is.

Two days later he's played 28 hours. Keep in mind, this guy has a wife, two kids, and a job. Guy loves it. I can't even begin to understand how one of the biggest hater of Japanese games I know loves Persona 4 golden which exemplifies most of the tropes and stereo-types applied to the genre.

When I've asked him why he liked the game, he basically said the story was interesting and different, and funny. He felt the way the persona system is handled with social links was also new and interesting.

As he's explaining what he likes about the game to me, I'm sitting here gobsmacked that no matter who I introduce this game to, they like it.

The point of this thread is, why does this game, which by all rights is built to be niche, appeal to so many different types of people? I'd also like to hear from someone who hated the game, there's got to be -someone- who dislikes P4G. Also, what are your experiences with this game appealing to people who otherwise don't like JRPGs?

I played for about 5 hours...was bored out of my mind...sent it back to Gamefly.

I'm sorry, I'm 32 years old with a wife and kid. I don't have 8-10 hours to play a game "before it gets good"

Then play Persona 3. It gets good from the beginning.

The weird thing is, the shooter-bro I talked about loving it has a wife and two kids and is 34.

Great characters with a good mystery story that also has addicting combat that is amplified with demon fusions. The music, menus, and dialogue are all excellent.

Charismatic and well written characters, a nice setting that isn't used often in games, wonderful music, a great story that holds your attention, fantastic writing with great humor that anyone can enjoy, an easy to understand but somewhat deep battle system.

When a game, regardless of genre, is as good as Persona 4, it trascends the boundaries of its genre and ends up captivating a lot of people that might not usually enjoy that type of game.

I just got into the game myself. I was a huge JRPG fan about a decade ago but haven't really sunk my teeth into any lately.

I didn't think I'd like this because it seemed so overwhelmingly Japanese, but it's really charming. The voice acting really helps, I'm surprised how much of the dialog is voiced. The story is interesting so far (couple hours in) as it avoids the standard JRPG tropes. The gameplay systems seem deep without being too confusing (yet).

Dating Sims are addicitive and JRPGS are deep. I'm not calling Persona 4 a dating sim, but it'd be ignorant to claim that it didn't take many aspects of the "genre." As a result you have a game that is easily accessible like a dating sim, but also deep and complex like a good JRPG. Add to that, that the story, characters and setting are relateable but also feel new and exciting and you have a winner.

I still need to play P4, but for P3 it was the OST and story that made it for me. The social stuff was fun, persona combining was neat, and the palatable chunks of the two dichotomies of gameplay made it a joy to play a bit here and there. Combat/Dungeon crawling is not the games strengths. Really looking to see the improvements in 4, I'm certain they go a long way in cultivating the fan following of the series.

Yugioh/Pokemon

Story touches Serious Subjects Such as Sexual Identity, Aimlessness, Social Dynamics and Societal Changes and how it effects thoughts apart of the change who may have not necessarily started , Incoherence of culture and a life style, and sexism.
(Kanji, Chie, Yosuke, Yukiko, Naoto )

Waifus.

Ehhh it's good in small bursts. I'm 40 hours in but I can't bring myself to play more than 2 hours at a time. Combat is super boring.

It have many thing that could appeal to a lot of people.
I bet there are a lot of person who played just in order to see more demons and their compendium entry.

I like the characters a lot (not just the waifus!) and the presentation (especially in terms of art style and music) is absolutely stellar. P4 was awesome, though if you look at it objectively, it's a relatively mediocre dungeon crawl through *extremely* repetitive environments. It's just that the rest of the game is done so well that it succeeds despite that repetition.

Same here, everyone I've shown it to has completely fallen in love with it, even some friends that mostly play mainstream shooters and the like.

I'm glad I tried but I'm in the same boat as you. I prefer my games to be between 8-12 hours that's usually when my ADD kicks in. Just think I'm not part of this demographic anymore.

Dont forget the catchy OST.
Catchy, but pretty terrible. Kinda like Persona 3's battle theme.

Mainly liked Persona 4 for the interactions with the characters and the battle system. If Persona didn't have social links or good characters, I probably wouldn't like the series as much.

Also, Persona 3's story is better and it doesn't take long to get into the story.

It didn't charm me. It irritated the hell out of me. The whole thing is just so chirpy and squeaky. The dungeons and combat are mindnumbing. I feel like I am the only person in this world who feels this way. I want people to play Sine Mora instead!

If it makes you feel better, I play Sine Mora on lunch break a lot lately.
