What the hell is it about Persona 4?

I felt like Atlus went all out with P3, the story was really epic and the ending awesome as well.

P4 wasn't bad, but... the story just wasn't as ambitious imo

Sorry about the "ot" D:

It was on purpose, the tone of P4 is supposed to be dialed back, nostalgic and down to earth. I feel that P2IS and P2EP are also all out and epic.

I am not sure why, all I know is that in a 10 mile radius, near told me about 50 people were playing this game. It is the only game I have seen with that many people playing it at the same time. Normally the genre's are all over the place in terms of representation.

I love the game myself. I took a little break and I will go back to it in a short while.

I tried Persona 3 and couldn't get into it. The whole social sim aspect, and going to school and all of that bored the hell out of me.
I played persona 3 and while I loved the artwork and the amount of stuff thrown at you I never finished it. I thought it was a great but heavy title.

P4G is a MUCH better title by far. Thankfully after playing P3, I didn't feel overwhelmed but even for newer players I imagine P4G will still win out because of how it conveys things to the player.

But I played SMT IV and loved the hell out of it. I know they are very different games but I loved it so effin much now I want to get into the whole series.
I kinda want to revisit Persona for that very reason, do you guys think P4 would work for me?
If you could try before you buy, the tone is completely different than P3 and every single gameplay system is streamlined and more gratifying.

On the other hand, if you loved SMT4 I'd sooner recommend SMT3: Nocturne on PS2.

P4 has a ton of social sim/school stuff as well, it's a major part of both games. It probably won't click for you either if those were the aspects of P3 that were offputting for you.

You could try your hand at the earlier Persona games that don't have the social link elements, or the older SMT games like Nocturne.

Edit: I did enjoy Catherine, a lot though.

I say try out Devil Survivor Overclocked for 3DS. Some of the same anime styling and concepts are there, but the game is much more SMT like. Hell, the plot was an SMT1 tribute.

Oh yeah, Nocturne is on my list. Heard great things about it.

Persona 1 and 2 have a closer atmosphere to the mainline SMT games than P3 and P4.

Yeah, it's great, isn't it? :P

Speaking as someone who plays a lot of RPGs, I love how small-scale P4's story is for most of the game. It really gives it a different vibe from the other stuff out there that's really refreshing.

First few posts nailed it, I think. I haven't played it, but it seems to put the dating sim aspect into an RPG shell, shaking off the association with Oneechan Fucker 2.0 and reaching a broader audience who haven't played a dating sim before.

This thread makes me tempted to buy a copy for my brother whenever I see it for $20 or less. Though he wouldn't necessarily try it anyway...

Worst case scenario I'd have my own physical copy, I guess.

Junpei and Yukari are far better characters than anyone in P4. While both games had plenty of stereotypical anime tropes for characters, P4 was far worse with that.

And I actually prefer the story in 3 to 4 - I know a lot of people prefer 4 for the more personal approach but a lot of us prefer the larger overarching plot in 3 as well as the overall death theme.

Junpei & Yukari are terrible people. The only pleasant characters are Aigis, Koromaru (a fucking wolf) & psychic girl whose name escapes me.

Well, I think it depends in term of characters. Junpei + Yukari + Mitsuru are really good. Junpei's development through the game is really amazing, but lots of stuff happens to that poor guy. Yukari has some serious problems and she takes the spotlight during the game main plot a couple of times. And Mitsuru is in the middle of Yukari's problems and has a lot of pressure to endure. Outside those three, imho, characters go from meh (Akihiko, Shinji) to why I have to endure this (Ken?) to "woof" (Koromaru is cute <3 lol, but didn't bring anything to the table outside "what's the best party setup?" discussions)

The best strength Persona 4 has character wise is that it's easy to attach them to your high school friends. I could talk about three characters that I felt kinda suited some of my best friends during that age. So there is that. And even those who don't suit those parameters are solid and likeable (except Yukiko, but there is people with such a terrible taste that even choose her as a waifu
j/k
).

That and the fact that in P4 you can social link your whole party, but you never get the whole experience in P3 (in Portable you can S.L male mates with female MC, but it's not the same).

And Teddie is a beary good mascot when he doesn't troll us in announcement streams.

^No.

I am gonna have to post this on every single page. It is a social sim, not a dating sim. Only like 20/30% of the social links are datable and you only spend like 10% of the entire social link doing anything remotely resembling dating. You spend time with bros, old people, little kids, and if you are playing 4, with girls as just friends.

How cute it is then that there'll never be a western release of that. Atlus does the darnedest things.

Popular theory is tha we got Soul Hackers instead of that. If that's the case, I'll bite my tounge and say we got the better deal. P2EPP is amazing but the Ps1 version is good and SH is awesome and there is no other English version of it.

Nail on the head'd. The waifu shit just creeps me out too. I have no interest in a dating sim or looking at computer generated females. Go talk to a real girl you nerds.
I love how in these threads there is always a post like this that sounds almost like a parody.

I don't get the love for this series at all.

The social stuff is so boring and the dungeons a chore.

Watch the Giant Bomb endurance run. I don't know if I would have enjoyed the game if I had actually played it. But I've put like 400 hours into the endurance run so I guess I'm a fan.

I'd prefer Eternal Punishment, considering I'm European, the 3DS is region locked and Atlus hates Europe.

A few people have mentioned the game not clicking for them in this thread. So no, it doesn't actually. ;P
Aww, well that kinda sucks =(
At least the game is spreading to most people, which is great. A few here and there not liking the game is better than the majority (like some other japanese games).

Xenoblade is awesome from start to finish.

P4 is not. It gets good, but it takes sooooo long to get there.

Other way around for me. P4 hooked me from the beginning, whereas I'm 15-20 hours into Xenoblade and the game has yet to grip me.

Is it weird that I despise Persona 4? Is it weirder that I like SMT IV yet despise Persona 4?

Not really. They're completely different games that have their own flavor.

I ran it all the way through (except for that final dungeon that I learned of after it was over), and was bored silly by the end.
Luckily, had Soul Hackers as a chaser, which was much more my speed.

I bought Persona 4 (the original PS2 version) this past summer and had the same experience with it that I've had with a lot of other JRPGs: I quit about 10 hours into it. It was alright, but people keep saying the game has 70+ hours of content, and that's just daunting to me. I don't want to spend that much time on a game I'm only kind of enjoying.

One thing I will say I just absolutely don't get is why people like the characters so much. They were really plain and boring to me. Do they get way better later on or something?

They do, but don't force yourself.

That being said, P4G has barely any load time and you can fast forward any conversation, so the whole game moves much quicker. If you get a vita, try picking it up later but dont' feel bad if it just doesn't click with you.

It's also a very similar game in every regard to Persona 3, but somehow much, much more popular. This is maybe the most confusing point - it is improved, but that much?
Not having to rely on stupid AI thats keep doing marin karin on bosses or healing themselves and forgeting their leader thats going to die on the next turn do wonders...

If you want to collect and see everything it's like 70+ hours but you can beat it in like 40 or something like that. Same way an Ass Creed game has like 50+ hours of content but can be completed in 20.

I personally find it hard to believe someone could outright hate the battle system. Stacking One Mores and fusing Personas was addictive as hell. On another note, when the hell does P2:IS get good? A bomb just detonated and the plot seems to be getting good, but the combat is fucking awful. Where are my One Mores?

Well, the actual game systems of a dating sim and a social sim would be basically identical. I've spent a lot more time studying and doing sports than I have going on dates in Tokimeki Memorial, but it's still called a dating sim. It's just easy nomenclature.

P3P adresses that, though, and it's still not particularly popular compared to 4.

I tried Persona 4 once. I never got past the intro. No thanks. My friend loves the series though. So he's always excited when more Persona news comes out. Which I tell him about.
