What type of setting/mythos is appropriate for a new From Software RPG?

Yeah, Sci-Fi could work if it's the really outlandish/scary type of Sci-Fi
like those disturbing visual novel covers I've seen when I was a kid.

Or a Hulk crossroads kind of setting, inter-dimensions

Combine sci-fi and H.R. Lovecraft monsters and religion. With a extra effort in story that is becomes heavily incorporated in its game play. The game has a God of War art direction and every weapon is ridiculous.

With all the sci-fi mecha talk. I'd love to see a xenogears/neon Genesis gods and living robots take on the souls formula. I'm also keen on any other mythos really. Give me an asuras wrath blending of many different eastern mythos. Shinto to Hinduism to whatever. Or hell just give me a straight up regular ass armored core.

Miyazaki should direct a full on Horror Game. Bloodborne came pretty close.

But whatever he does, it is already pre-ordered. I would even play a Pacific Rim Style Armores Core game from him.

something inspired by BLAME!

I would like them to do something that is not souls related in any way. They have the talent to do it and they should try, but this thread proves people want more and the same with a different look.

I want a shin megami tensei inspired souls game.

The setting is a post apocalyptic modern city/world that has been overrun by demons.
What's left of humanity is basically living underground. Though some have decided to work with the demons, others even worship them.

Combat is still focused on melee, because while there are guns, bullets are rare.

There is still magic, as the event that brought the demons has altered the world.

Plenty of oportunities to create lore. Who are these demos, where do they come from, are they organized? Do they have leaders? How did they get into our world?.
There could be factions or cults that make up covenants. A group of monster hunters, a group that worships them, a group of demons, etc.

Stop reading my minds god damn it.

European medieval/victorian horror is so widely recognized that i think it would be very hard to find something similarly affecting to so many. Space would be cool but more in that Aliens/Sunshine way of surviving in the vast vacuous against unknown evils.

As crazy as it sounds I feel like the Dead Space IP would be perfect for a Souls like, especially if the game was set on the Ishimura. Keep the dismemberment focus but reduce the role of guns by limiting ammo. Everything else about the IP (twisted creatures+crazy religion) lines up well with the vibe SoulsBourne has been going for.

Godspeed my friend. BLAME! is something i'd love From to take inspiration if they went cyberpunk. That or H.R. Giger's work really. But I love BLAME! myself.

In any case, I would love if they jsut moved away completely from medieval and victorian for a while. And I think they have the strength to do a wide variety of settings really. Futuristic. Contemporary. Or something more dream like.

Honestly I think they should also move away from souls gameplay wise. I remember how Miyazaki wanted to do something to do like Ico, a game that inspired him to make games himself. I think they could make that's grand while being a bit more mellow, but keepign that quality touch in world building and level design. While I do love me the challenge, it would be that more than any setting that I would like to welcome just to see where they can dabble. Plus some people who just cannot get into souls might enjoy having something a bit more accessible

They've excelled in fantasy horror (by all accounts, only played and loved BB/DS so far), maybe something in the Souls vein crossed with a Dead Space aesthetic?

I would prefer a fast styled Mech game much like AC4 or a slower style futuristic RPG like Dark Souls speed.

I don't care for the speed of Bloodborne so that would be my hopes for the next game.

I want to see them be creative as well.

I wonder what kind of future they would envision.

From has only ever really excelled at dark fantasy RPGs, and it makes sense; the company was literally founded on those types of games.

I can't see anything they do out of that being well done. From's aces are dark fantasy games, and mech customizing games. As the OP is asking about RPGs, I think it's narrow.

I imagine derelict, Giger style, dark sci-fi could be mixed in with a cyberpunk setting at different points. Kind of like the Gothic horror to cosmic horror themes of Bloodborne.

Though, I would like to see the souls formula put to rest for a bit I'm sure there's more settings to explore, maybe with a different formula.

holy fuck that looks cool

I defenitely recommend you read the whole thing if you like cool design of worlds and characters and into cyberpunk. I'm too stupid to remember the name, but I think it's the same mangaka who made Knights of Sidonia which is quite popular thanks to the anime series. and I heard that the same studio is making BLAME! anime as well.

I think this was a easter egg\promo in one KoS episode

Tsutomu nhei !

There's also Biomega, something in a similar vein and setting. He also drew a wolverine comic called "Snikt" if i recall (story is a bit garbo but it's mostly there as an excuse to put wolverine in Nihei's style and setting =p)

Superhero. Prepare to Fly.

I have legitimately thought a Super Souls game would be really cool. It could take place in a city where all the superheroes got corrupted by some evil,

And the item descriptions that flesh out the world would still work:
"This shield was once wielded by the legendary Captain America. It is forged from vibranium, a metal that nullifies vibrations, found only in the mysterious country of Wakanda."

I'm not a sci fi guy so I would strongly prefer an eastern feudal setting. Japan would be good but I think China offers more because of its diversity. Maybe they could base it loosely off of the Mongolian hordes and the Black Plague.

Outside of Omega Force, is anyone really making samurai games anymore? Nioh is a rare exception.

that is true that there aren't that many being made and i am being hypocritical by still wanting another onimusha game its just i feel like samurais are the go to guy when you talk about venturing away from knights and vikings. I just want something new and unique.

I would like to see a FROM game where you build robots and fight other robots
How many games with this setting need to bomb before you realize that this setting is not really hot any more? Wold be a total waste of FROMs talent.

OP answered the question himself. Would love to see a Feudal Japanese from game with Ninjas and shit.

For a sci-fi souls I want a setting like the Dead Sea from Chrono Cross. The Dead Sea/Tower of Geddon have great atmosphere and an amazing feeling of desolation. All these different eras of the future and different timelines mashed up together and frozen in place. It's a big time apocalypse. There are even shades/ghosts of past residents lingering around as enemies as well as haywire robots and creepy mannequins.

This post needs more love. Fucking fantastic idea.

Last I checked the Armored Core series does better for From than the Tenchu series, which is practically what you're asking for.

It's cliche, but steampunk with melded biological and mechanical monstrosities. Top hats, buzzsaws and blunderbusses. Throw some ghost/demon possessions in there too for good measure.

Story could be Machine for Pigs done right, with world slowly revealing how modernization was taken to cultish levels.

I really dislike when game design is reduced to [insert historical era here]. So bland. FROM is capable of creating some truly original wolds. I hope they get crazy with whatever they want to do.

H.R. Giger

or

Conan the Barbarian-like setting

or

More Lovecraft

Damn. I didn't know I wanted this until now. A sword & sorcery setting with tons of decadence and brutality in a fantasy setting... Sounds good. Additionally, we really don't have a proper example of a sword & sorcery game in modern gaming. I would be so down with FROM tackling that.

A first person shooter. Lots of atmosphere and stuff. When you get invaded or invade someone the shoot offs would be glorious. Sniper battles galore.

Shit, I can't get a steam punk based sequel to Bloodborne out of my head now.

Imagine early days of industrializations, when workers were underpaid, safety precations were non existant, but taken to logical extreme.

Empty streets of the city, covered in steam escaping from long eroded from disrepair pipes, connected to still working factories, filled with what once were humans, going through motions to keep the conveyers alive, slaves to their routine, unable to even comprehend that there's no one to work for anymore. A lone person, who is in the city for some reason, slowly unravelling it's past and how this broken world became what it is, and perhaps putting an end to this wind up toy of a city once and for all, letting it rest in peace... or maybe not.

How is a game that doesn't sell well a waste of talent?

Anyways, there is much more appeal internationally in a robot game than a ninja game. Ninja games short of Ninja Gaiden don't really sell well.

The Legend of Souls

Show Nintendo how a proper Zelda game based on excellent combat, exploration and lore is done, From.

Dark Souls in a Dead Space/System Shock setting. Like... in a huge spaceship or in a futuristic city. Both of which have gone terribly wrong.

What if something completely more abstract, like a dystopia based on a mix of MC Escher architecture and Brazil's administrative nightmare

okay maybe too much ?...fine :<

The more abstract, obscure and polarizing, the better.

I doubt we'll get that though, FROM gotta keep making that money.

The last thing I want is for them to go the Ubisoft route, where it's just Ubisoft the Game: Jungle Edition and so on.
