What will the PlayStation 4 controller look like?

I honestly believe this time we will not get Dual Shock 4. If Sony is serious about motion gaming we'll get a Move+nunchuck combo that will retain all of the functionality of a Dual Shock(two analog sticks, two shoulder buttons and four buttons on each side).

I might cry tears of rage if that happened. Hopefully Sony realized with the failure of Move that nobody gives a shit about their motion control. If they're dead set on including it, at least also include a regular dualshock4 with it.

They've put too much money into Move, and it hasn't paid dividends yet. I'm expecting that PS4 is going have both a dualshock and Move controls as standard controllers.

Plenty of games use both d-pad and analog stick. Games tend to be more than just "move character and push "A" button" these days. I just finished playing Dark Souls and I don't want to even imagine playing that on a 360 pad.

Exactly, what a nightmare that would be. Ideally, Sony would offer a DS4 and a DS4 "S" or Version 2 with the sticks swapped for losers :P No point in having just one.

Dual Shock is perfect.

Needs better stick quality, than it would be glorious.

Dualshock design is fine, but could use refinement.

Analog stick placement isn't necessarily a major ergonomic concern for most people.

The bigger issue is size of the controller, and the hard edges. I feel like Sony did a lot of "studying" with the Move / Nav controllers, and I can honestly see them revising the DS design to make it more elegant and comfortable. I don't see them abandoning any layout though, we'll still have 4 shoulder buttons, 4 facebuttons and the D-Pad, and analog stick placement will remain in tact (not offset).

Edit: Also, it won't have touch or any of that, and probably won't even have Motion control.

I like the way you think. The dualshock is a great design. It just needs less "hard edges" as you say. The symmetry allows great versatility with games.

They've tried a banana, and they've tried a lollipop, so obviously next they'll do a banana flavored lollipop. That's right, I'm calling it - a boomerang dual shock, with Taste-o-vision. SONY exclusive: Can you smell the fear? No - but you can taste it!

If this was 2005, maybe. But right now it's more familiar to the casual players than the two handed controller they have been avoiding since forever.

Considering how horrible Move did, I don't think the average PlayStation gamer wants that motion shit.

Move was horrible because it looked like a ripoff of the Wii remote, and Kinect existed. It was thoroughly the least desirable and useful of the three.

Why would they even care for Move when everyone is still excited and amazed by Kinect and they can play the library of very similar motion controlled games on the Wii?

Move failed because there was nothing worth playing with it. Sorry that motion controls ran over your dog but they will be standard in every future controller, and if there was any justice in the world pointers would be too.

Just keep the sticks symmetrical. That's all I ask.

I'd be ok with a tweaked Dual Shock, 'cause, something something 15 years of muscle memory something.

sigh at you guys wanting another dual shock. thing is an abomination to play shooters with.

I've been in the same frame of mind for the last decade. I don't mind the Dual Shock design but for petes sake, improve those analogue sticks.

Maybe make some adjustments, like handles and better triggers, but this should be the basic idea

The system should also be able to use Vita as a controller

This seems by FAR the most likely answer. I think MS decided to go this route "first" after Nintendo went there on two likely calculations. First, that Nintendo since it launched first would have the most time and ability given their sales last generation to secure a large userbase to make the Wii U the lead system next generation (much like PS2 was for it's generation despite being the weakest system by far - not counting the Dreamcast). Second, since MS and Nintendo both went this route it would force Sony to follow suit or risk getting gimped games since third parties would be optimizing the games for the other two systems screens and a "non-screened" version would be inherently inferior. So, Sony has to follow suit if you believe MS is going this route which I do.

I have no intension buying the WiiU so I hope Sony don't go with a stupid pad-like controller. I've been happy with my DualShock since the first Playstation and I don't want Sony to change it, at least too much.

It will have the Dual-Shock controller which was rated best ergonomic design several years over. I have a feeling we'll be seeing touch-screen LEDs as extensions for other games, but not on the main controller.

I was going to respond with throbbing dildo, but that's Nintendo's specialty.

I like the dualshock, but they could make it better imo.

maybe make it wider (it does make my hand cramp a little), 6 face buttons, 4 triggers/shoulders. Tweak those back "trigger" buttons not to be so "smushy". Switch the d-pad and left analogue around.

They'll probably go with another Dual Shock design, but I do hope they fix the ergonomics. I don't even mind the placement of the analog stick, just go with something that feels better to hold. The CCPro is essentially a Dual Shock and it's much more comfortable to actually play with.

Like you.

Seriously, though. I want it to stay as a Dualshock. I got no idea for other controllers that aren't based on the Wii U, and a tablet-only controller sans buttons sounds wacky.

Dual Shock is perfect.

We have a winner! =D

I'm happy to see that there are quite a few people who also like the Dualshock. I agree that it is a great controller. And I've never gotten cramps from using it.

I guess no matter what though, there are gonna be the people who love the Dualshock and Playstation, people who love the Playstation but think the controller should be tweaked, and some who love other console controllers so much they want the PS controller tweaked or completely changed. Doesn't matter who favors what console more, someone is going to complain about each controller. I think the 360 controller is good, but it's a little too bulky still. especially with that big battery pack behind it.

I think most people agree that the existing triggers are poor and make very little sense- design wise.

While I can see why people like their triggers, I can also understand why people have no love for them whatsoever.
With that said; wouldn't it be possible to have the best of both worlds- be able to adjust the amount of pressure on the triggers depending on preference or even make the trigger feel like another button simply by a switch.

I've always wondered if anyone did this. I've tired, but I just can't do it.
I've always held it like that, from the first time i grabbed a dualshock. I can hold it in different ways quite comfortably, but naturally i use my middle fingers for the triggers.

Dualshock 4 will no do doubt look just like Dualshock 3, though if there is one thing I'm hoping for it's that they improve the analog sticks. Not by changing positions, I love where they are located currently, but making them a little more durable. Sometimes I think Sony makes games like God of War intentionally to break your analogs and make you buy a new controller. I would also be happy if they slightly adjusted the location of the back buttons since they can give some awful finger cramps in some games.

Also the first time I picked up a Dualshock 3 I was surprised how light it was compared to a Dualshock 2. Would be cool if they could make it even lighter.
