you could get away with that stuff back then because each post was it's own webpage, with a link at the bottom of your actual post text to jump to the reply box, so people would make huge/complicated signatures since you habitually skipped by them anyway. This was back when you knew you were at a forum link because the site had "/cgi-bin/" in the URL.

Then UBB became super popular, and with it, the much smaller rectangle sig images.

I used to Mod on Test Your Might...signatures were ALWAYS a big infractable bullshit machine. Inappropriate stuff, super large gifs, oversized images, and it always created large gaps between posts interrupting conversation flow IMO.

I'm happier not having them. No one cares what zinger you want to have as your "branding". Either post quality or dont think that pictures with words on them equates to wisdom...doesn't work on facebook and it doesn't work on forums and people should be able to filter them out on both.

I got into Gaf at the tail end of animated gif avatars. I don't really miss them that much and I still feel like they're posted way too often in threads, but that's just because of my slow ass internet. Feel like signatures would end up being the same way, with excessive images.
