• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

What WRPG are you playing right now?

Why?.... do you mean mechanics wise cause if so that still doesn't add up.

Well, I guess it mainly comes down to a dedicated main character rather than a custom character. Other stuff like third person and sword combat, story and character focus, etc., all fits in well with my JRPG "code".

I see WRPGs as custom character games with first person combat systems. Etrian Odyssey is a Japanese made RPG that I would put under my WRPG category.

That excludes so many important WRPG games...

Playing Shadowrun: Hong Kong, I think I'm getting fairly close to the end.
I'm also playing Wasteland 2, though at this point I'm thinking I might wait for the Director's Cut since I'm not that far in yet.

Currently playing Dragon Age Inquisition, also just got The Witcher 3 at BestBuy yesterday for $23 with gamers club and rewards, that's up next.

BG 2 is not a wrpg confirmed.

Just finished the White March pt. 1 main stuff in Pillars of Eternity.

I can't say I was terribly impressed by any of the story content (which is basically how I feel about PoE in general), but I like the Soulbound weapons idea and hope they expand it in the second half of the expansion.

Witcher 3 still needs to be finished, but that'll have to wait for after MGSV.

I download Morrowind recently and will add several mods

Kotor II, the update is quite nice, very clean looking game. Also a bit of the Witcher 3 NG+,
nothing seems to slow down the alchemy build though, Geralt becomes quite the monster with potion and bomb spamming.

Well, in BG II you can at least create you charater choosing from multiple options: Gender, race, class etc. But what about Planescape - Torment? You're stuck as that one guy, no options at all. Totally not a WRPG.
/s

I'm doing a second run on Shadowrun - Hong Kong atm and just finally starting my first ever round of Pillars of Eternity (and I'm a kickstarter backer on this :p). Being an old infinity engine veteran, I don't expect too much trouble adaption to PoE.

Perfect place for a recommendation.

JRPGs are my favorite genre, but I've wanted to get into WRPGs for three longest time. Tried KOTOR, tired DA:I, nothing grabbed me. Any suggestions, preferably on console?

I'm in the same boat as you, though I did find a few western RPGs I liked:

South Park: Stick of Truth is a western RPG with a Paper Mario inspired battle system... not the most balanced game out there, but it's hilarious if you're a fan of the show.

If you want to add PC games to the list, I highly recommend Planescape Torment (more like a visual novel/point and click than an RPG... heavily story-based) and Anachronox (supposedly the producer of the game had every one of his developers play Chrono Trigger and FF7 before development started). Both are available on GOG.

And the Witcher series is pretty fun (haven't played the third one, yet). Pretty streamlined, with a semi-unique setting for the genre, and a strong central cast.

Anyways... I haven't really played a western RPG in a while but thinking of doing an Ultima series playthrough... once my Suikoden, Wild Arms and BOF playthroughs are complete.

Started Dragon Age: Inquisition a while ago. Haven't gotten far. Playing it for the first time and went straight for the Nightmare difficulty level. Kind of struggling on these low levels with very few worthwhile skills to use. Haven't quite figured out what's the best way to play this game. Anything more than 3-5 enemies is a struggle.

What class are you? Which characters are you using? What level are you?

Finished Pool of Radiance yesterday.
My biggest gripe with the game, battles taking to much time, became less of a problem when level 3 spells unlocked for my magic-users. Exterminating hordes of enemies with one well-aimed fireball never gets old.
Overall, I'd say it's a solid game with a well-done formula. I hope Curse of the Azure Bonds won't disappoint when its turn comes.

Next WRPG on my list is Ultima V, though it will have to wait a little.

Currently on The Witcher 2 to chain with The Witcher 3 (did not played TW1)
Maybe I'll try The Elder Scroll Skyrim or Mass Effect saga

Just finished a very long Dark Savant Trilogy run, that's Wizardry 6-8 for those that don't know.

Not sure what I want to play next...

Currently playing.... Heroes of Might and Magic 3, not really a rpg it's a tbs but it does have some rpg elements.

Dragon Age: Inquisition's DLC

Trespasser has just confirmed my hype for DA4, as well as a few of my pet lore theories. Also, makes certain parts of older games hilarious/awesome in hindsight.

Wait, has Bioware even alluded to there being a sequel in the works?

That would make me very happy.

Dragon Age Inquisition... finished the DLC with my first 2handed warrior build... trying out the rogue in a new playthrough.

I wish it was only that (that's been fixed already anyway).

That's the only thing I remember that was broken but then again I haven't kept up to well with the bugs and such since I'm waiting for the second expansion to start playing again.

Been on a Bioware kick lately! Jumped back into Dragon Age: Inquisition and starting a fresh playthrough of the Mass Effect series on PS3.

I'm in the lull before Wasteland 2 and D:OS re-launch on consoles. Super-excited for both

Just finished both Witcher 3 and the Dragon Age Inquisition expansions.

I'm thinking of replaying one of the Fallout games in prep for 4, but I worry about burnout. Maybe I'll just play KotOR 2 instead since I haven't played it with the update (but I have played it with the restoration mod so I'm not sure how different that is.)

Going to play Witcher 3 soon. I just started and been trying for 2 hours now to get mods and controller config working on PC. No instant-cast mod has worked so far. =(

Instant cast works if you follow the steps here. If you are on patch 1.07 or higher, then follow the second half of that first post.

playing new vegas in preperation for FO4.

at the part where you have to choose sides.... completely clueless. may just jump into the DLC as a diversion

When my addiction of Civ V isn't wrecking my weekends, I am replaying KOTOR II (restored patch) for the 5th time (2nd with the patch), Fallout 1 for the first time (no mods, QQ Mac life). I don't own a mouse for my computer, so using my touchpad has been interesting. Hoping to finally play Fallout 2, BG 1 and 2, and Planescape Torment in the near future. I do wish mods were possible but alas they are not.

Replaying Dragon Age: Inquisition.

The Trespasser hype is real.

When I go back home to America for vacation, I am going to play this DLC for sure. It hurts not being able to play it right now. :-(

Still messing around with Witcher 3, collecting stuff before I start my new-game plus run. Even months after the fact, the game impresses me heavily.

On my second playthrough of The Witcher 3, going through NG+.

Can't wait for the Hearts of Stone expansion next month.

I'm wondering how I'm going to hit level 30 for the expansion. I guess I'll have to complete NG+ first.

Currently playing Trespasser DLC for Dragon Age. It's pretty good imo.

Icewind Dale Enhanced Edition and Shadowrun Returns (I have the better sequals but apparently playing them will make me hate SRR so I want to finish it first, having fun so far.)

Just finished Deus Ex HR directors cut and loved everything but the end damn that was a kinda anti climamx. Only the OG Deus Ex has done the conclusion right the other games in the series really buggered it up.

I'm back playing BG2 after finishing BG1, it's feels weird playing a Bioware that is actually good. I'm also about to start my first run of PoE. Have pretty damn high expectations on that one given that it's made by Obsidian. I also have Shadowrun returns in my backlog, but playing three 3 WRPG is probably pushing it. Will probably mean i'll be single again.

Mass Effect

Bought the trilogy on sale to see what all the fuss is about^^ So far I really enjoy it and feel stupid for ignoring it because "it looks like Star Trek nerd shit".
