Whatcha Been Playin': For 3-5 hours per charge Edition

Been playing Persona 3 Portable as my main single player game lately, just finished it last night.

Think I'll play Bioshock next, it's been sitting there for a while

Heroes of Newerth is also my main multiplayer game right now

Unchained Blades Rexx on 3DS. Here are some detailed thoughts since the game appears to be fairly unknown.

This game is kind of painful but I find myself sinking a lot of time into it. I got it because I'm a big fan of first-person dungeon crawlers, and I wanted a 3DS RPG so that I could grind to my heart's content without the horrible DS game scaling or missing out on 3DS features (StreetPass, etc).

I certainly got what I wished for, as the grind in this game is beyond belief. Getting started in this game is quite a struggle, but I managed to ride out the difficulty for a few hours and get exploring without having to run back to town every five minutes. Money is still ridiculously tight, though, and I'm feeling bogged down by the half-hearted party and item foraging/creation systems.

You can occasionally recruit monsters when they're down to half-HP and have them join your characters in groups of up to four monsters per character, where they can take hits for you or contribute attacks on their own. It's pretty half-assed, though, and managing your recruits ends up being quite a hassle. I'd probably try and get by without this system if you didn't have to occasionally fight weird rhythm games battles with all your recruits against a set of monsters.

Item foraging/creation is another system that could have been good if it weren't half-assed as well. The majority of the items you get appear to be useless, most forage spots are random and temporary, and you have to grind your creation skill, which costs a lot of time, money and rare items, particularly given that there's a good chance of failing. It's not a patch on what Etrian Odyssey offers in this regard.

As for the characters, well, half of my current party makes me embarrassed and I worry that my girlfriend thinks I'm a paedophile now. The characters are anthropomorphised monster people - the main's a dragon-turned-man, and right now I'm hanging around with a golem prince who looks like some kind of abstract metal puppy, a medusa with colossal tits and a gratingly high-pitched voice, and some kind of emotionless-little-girl-mandrake.

Despite all the above, I can't stop playing. I'm a glutton for punishment when it comes to crawling dungeons. :(

The game is a PSP port, so I'm wondering if some of its quirks are going to be symptomatic of PSP ports in general:
- The text is tiny to the point where it's damn near impossible, for example, to tell the difference between ほ and ぼ.
- Similarly, some HUD elements are tiny too - it's very difficult to make out the health bars of your monster recruits, which are about one pixel high.
- Naming screens pop up the 3DS software keyboard instead of using an in-game system, probably since PSP games tend to favour using the PSP software keyboard.
- Large 2D portraits that appear when using limit breaks aren't present in the 3DS version.
- Saving takes fucking forever.
- Can't say anything about the 3D, as I can't see stereoscopic 3D.

Roll on Etrian Odyssey for 3DS, if that's even a thing and not just an "oh yeah, that'd be nice to have" launch promise.

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones

Finished up the final game in the HD Collection.

When I originally played through this on the PS2 it was my least favourite of the trilogy mainly because i didn't like the chariot races, boss fights or the dark prince gameplay. This time around I found the chariot races to be fine (didn't crash at all during them) and the boss fights where a lot easier, although I still didn't like the dark prince sequences at all and found them to be frustrating to play through at times.

I've had a sealed copy of The Forgotten Sands sitting here for a while now so I will try and get around to playing through it soon.

Tomb Raider: Legend

I picked up the Tomb Raider HD Collection because I'm interested in the new game coming out. My only previous experience with the Tomb Raider games was playing through one of the originals on PC at a friend’s house and locking the butler in the fridge, so this was my first time properly playing through a game in the series and I didn't really enjoy it at all.

The platforming was kind of clunky, especially after just playing through the Prince of Persia series and the combat and boss fights were terrible overall.

I’ve hear that Anniversary and Underworld are supposed to be better games so I hope to enjoy them a bit more when I get around to trying them out.

Final Fantasy X

Just reached Gagazet and feel like I must be nearing the end soon. I was kind of hoping that the world would open up at some point but it has been just as linear as FFXIII for the most part.

I'm still having fun and looking forward to playing more.

Going back to Deus Ex: HR after plowing through most of it in a weekend and getting stuck on the second to final boss. Screwed myself over with not-so-optimal inventory so I'm jumping back to a save 3-4 hours prior for the hell of it.

Other than that, I've been making my way through Bulletstorm and loving it! At act 6 ch 3, need to finish it off. Also playing Child of Eden which I got with Bulletstorm for a total of $25 thanks to a Best Buy misprint/redacted deal.

Dragon quest VI - Finishing this up, with like 27-hours clocked, hope to get it finished it up within the next few days, so i can get my focus back on Xenoblade chronicles.

Finished up on Shadows of the Damned this week. Fantastic game all around. The soundtrack is especially noteworthy. Akira Yamaoka at his finest.

0yZxU.jpg

This game gets a bad rep everywhere, especially on GAF. Still, I wanted to see what the fuss was about and it bought it on sale this week. I definitely get the complaints. It's lineair as hell, the story is convoluted nonsense (though in my opinion, enjoyable enough), it starts off really slowly and doesn't bring the true combat system to the table untill 3-5 hours in and there is no leveling in the traditional RPG sense. Nevertheless I'm enjoying the living hell out of this game. The combat system is so damn good. It took a while for me to really click, but once it did, ooh man. Also I can't believe how god damn gorgeous this game is. It might just beat out Uncharted 2 for me as the best looking console game. The image quality is astounding and the colours, the character models, the locales and the art. Fantastic stuff all around. I'm 20 hours in right now and I'm looking forward to playing more of it. I'm hooked.

civilization-5.jpg

Fanfuckingtastic game. I just finished an epic 1500 turn game, and unfortunately I got beaten out right at the very end. Having this on Steam is convenient since I can bounce my saves between my laptop and desktop with Steam Cloud.

gears-of-war.jpg

All three Gears games. Trying to finish up 1 and 2 before my copy of 3 arrives. They're great, I just never got around to them because of all the other shooters out there. I wish there was some customization or upgrading of weapons and stats as the game progresses. But all in all Gears 1 is pretty amazing in terms of how well it holds up as a 5 year old title.

dead-island.jpg

This game is an aberration. I don't like zombie games. In fact I'm suffering from zombie fatigue. Between Shaun of the Dead, Dead Rising, The Walking Dead, Left 4 Dead 1/2, World War Z, Plants vs. Zombies, I Am Legend, and every other piece of zombie related pop culture over the past few years... I'm kind of backlashing against them. I had no interest in this game until I watched the quick look on Giant Bomb. When I saw the analog control system that lets you selectively target limbs I was sold. The Borderlands-esque open world nature of the game was the closer.

RO2 and

Red Faction: Armageddon.

I've been enjoying Red Faction quite a bit, picked it up impulsively and have loved almost every minute of it

Sudoku: The Puzzle Game Collection on my 3DS (way too addictive tbh)

bluedragon7.jpg

Finally playing Blue Dragon. Been getting into jRPGs a lot more recently (the first generation I've ever really gotten into).

Monsters Ate My Condo on my iPhone. But I'm a little biased here.

Bit Trip Beat, thank you Steam Deal. This game is amazing, yet incredibly frustrating. I beat the first stage with no problems, but Descent... There's this part where the blue bouncy bits come at you and I always miss them. Not a few, but nearly every single one. Once I enter Nether mode, I'm done, just can't predict where they land. Even watching a vid of this part is useless, since I screw up again when I play. I refuse to switch to easy however.

Just completed GOW: Chains of Olympus on my PS3. Will play Ghost of Sparta later. And tomorrow will be the launch day of Gears of War 3 in my country, can't wait! :D

Have you tried the Portal level? It's way harder than the second level.

Parasite Eve 2

I really don't like this anywhere near as much as PE1, especially without the ridiculously addicting weapon/armor upgrading system. I'm slogging through it, but it feels like an entirely different game. The whole "Resident Evil with RPG elements" idea is appealing but for whatever reason it's not as great as I expected it to be (although it's still pretty fun).

Next up: Siren Blood Curse, finally! (unless RE4 HD comes out first)

I have a bad habit of starting heaps of games and never finishing them. Few months ago I started a rule of "one" game "per platform" at any time. With a few exceptions like FIFA online, FORZA etc. Where the gameplay is really long, or I only play multiplayer.

Here's my current list:
dead_space_2_box.jpg

Playing Dead Space 2 on my laptop with Xbox controller, hooked up to my Samsung LED. This game is amazing, graphics and gameplay.
614047-unchartedboxart.jpg

Only very recently picked up a PS3 so have a large backlog of exclusives to get through. Am really enjoying Uncharted. I wish the graphics were a bit better though. Not sure if its my settings on PS3/TV, it just seems to be lacking. Anyone got any input??

Nothing on XBOX360 at the moment. Gears of War 3 on Tuesday though!

I've been playing Metal Gear Solid 4 all weekend. Hoping to finally beat it, I'm now way beyond where I was on my first attempt at a playthrough way back.

Also, I have a massive urge to smoke and drink sodas now thanks to this game...;)

The start is definitely weaker than the first game, hope it gets more interesting. Still I love the audience mechanic lol.
This game was my first Paper Mario game and I absolutely adored it. I hope it picks up for you Frost :)

Xenoblade Chronicles - I could probably just finish this, judging by comments in the OT I'm probably way overpowered for the final boss, but I'm trying to finish all the sidequests, get the highest quality gems, get the best armour sets for everybody, find all the unique monsters for affinity coins, max out my party's affinity, etc.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep - On a whim I put this into my PSP the other night. I'd finished all the stories long ago, just the arena/secret bosses to do.

Final Fantasy XIII - Now that XIII-2 is nearing I thought I should probably knuckle down and finish this one. Just the end game weapon/accesories grinding and missions to do. I made a breakthrough today, in that I got a set up and technique down for killing the turtles without using Death. Makes it so much easier. I'm not doing too bad with the Ingot drops but Traps are still very rare.

Dead Island

Put in almost 50hrs. Best FPS melee gameplay I've ever seen. If they did a few small changes, it'd be the best zombie game I'd ever played.

Yes, it's murder :) Caved and put it on easy so I could at least finish Descent and play the third level. Easy and normal feel like 'very easy' and 'hard', it's almost impossible to die on easy, but the other mode is maybe too challenging until you've memorized certain parts.

My first Bit Trip game, definitely interested in the others now.

Doing some extra stuff, taking it reaally slow.

614047-unchartedboxart.jpg

Finally playing this, so I can get to the good stuff (that would be Uncharted 2), I'm enjoying it, nothing too great, but good fun. Stupidly high body count, but yeah.

Xenoblade-Chronicles_NintendoWii_cover.jpg

Sooooo good!

Dead Island.

Two Worlds II.

Rise of Nightmares.

And finally decided to give this a spin after all these years:

Not much has changed. I however have decided to hold off of Bit.Trip Saga for now,

Final Fantasy X-2 (Will play when I beat Final Fantasy XIII)
Final Fantasy IX (Got this months ago with left over money. Will play when I beat Final Fantasy VIII)
All the other games from last week that I haven't listed means that I haven't played them this week :lol

I've started way to many games and am never going to beat them. No more RPGs until next year!

So I started off by playing

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
8DCWy.png

I finished Terras story but before moving on to Ven had a sudden urge to go back and replay the original

Kingdom Hearts
JPcmd.png

So after playing this and getting up to Agrabah I found out that this had been fully translated in to English

Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix +
lQ7yU.png

So I have now stopped playing the original to play KH2 FM+ on critical mode, I hope I don't regret choosing critical once I'm further in. Currently still in Twilight Town as Roxas, just won the struggle tournament.

Finally finished Metroid 1 after all these years. It was easier than I remember.
Replayed Super/Zero/Fusion. They will never stop being amazing.
