What's taking Persona 5 so long to release?

Do you know when they said that? I honestly wouldn't mind if P5 shaved off 20 or so hours from P3/P4's average length to make a much more dense game.

This Persona 5 developer interview: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x38iqff_persona-5-developer-interview-katsura-hashino_videogames

Siliconera translation:
Since Persona 5 is being developed for a new console, Hashino didn’t want to hold anything back and just make a short game, so instead, they’re packing the game with all kinds of content, and it’ll be the most voluminous title the series has yet to see as far as gameplay and play time goes.

I'd say that's fair that gamers should learn patience, but at the same time, enough is enough:

Stop revealing your games so damn early.

This was more the case of an unexpected delay though. Their original release timeframe seemed like a pretty reasonable length of time from the announcement to me. Can't really fault them for running into development difficulties. I will say that their insistence that there was no delay up until the day the delay was revealed was just terrible though. People have every right to get upset at how they handled that. But complaining because the game is taking longer than they want it to? Nah.

Star Ocean 5 is a big ass RPG and it's out less than a year (or more precisely: it was revealed April 11 2015, to be released on March 31, 2016) after the reveal. :P

But then again, tri-Ace is pretty ace on tech and I'm unsure about their numbers.

tri-Ace worked on two other big ass RPGs,XIII-2 and LR.

They're kinda in a different league when it comes to productivity.

I don't need info on Persona 5. That kinda defeats the purpose of these games being heavy on the mystery.

They can take as long as they want, there's really nothing like Persona so the only thing we can do is wait.

You should have tried waiting for Duke Nukem Forever.

What the... How is this even remotely the same thing? We know this game is in active development and have a release timeline for it with a single official delay announcement. They are completely different situations.

This is why every game should do a Fallout 4 from now on and announce when you're 5 months away from coming out.

Same with Duke Nukem Forever:

Duke Nukem Forever was officially announced on April 28, 1997, with the intention of releasing the game no later than mid-1998.

In August and September, the first screenshots of Duke Nukem Forever were released in PC Gamer. However, 3D Realms did not receive the Quake II engine code until November 1997, and the earlier screenshots were mock-ups with the Quake engine that the team had made in their spare time. 3D Realms unveiled the first video footage of Duke Nukem Forever using the Quake II engine at the 1998 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) conference.

They're not 100% the same but Duke Nukem Forever had a set release timeframe, information with screenshots and a trailer.

Did you even read your quotes. The screenshots weren't actual screenshots they were mock ups. Not to mention we actually have very polished gameplay footage of Persona 5. I honestly can't believe I'm having to explain how Persona 5 development is dissimilar to Duke Nukem Forever's constant development limbo. Are you for real?

Chill, brethren. Competent devs just trying to outdo themselves, balancing about 100+ hours of content. It will be glorious. Faith and patience, my friend.

I've been wondering why it's been taking so long to release Persona 5. I was very hyped back last November 2013 but until now, we only get a vague "Summer 2016" release (and who knows, it might be delayed again). At least we did get a TGS trailer though.

What's annoying is that the release date moved from Winter 2014 to 2015 to Summer 2016 and information has been incredibly scare for the past years. If I compare it to FFXV, SE has at least been providing consistent information since 2014 I believe.

Do you think this game was delayed due to engine problems or are they really making the world much bigger and explorable than Persona 3 and 4?

I think it was delayed because they're aiming for a certain level of quality. At least that's what i hope.

Ugh, I forgot it's still so far away.

Thanks a lot, OP.

I'm not saying they're similar but people have been waiting for several games and even to the length of 10 years (see DNF, maybe even Versus XIII->XV). All I'm trying to point out is if you show your goods way too early (like a teaser and maybe a few screenshots), you'll hype up people unexpectedly especially if you're riding from a big hype. This also made me wonder why Persona 5 had been delayed a few times already. Nowadays, revealing a game 3-4 years before its actual release may be a wrong move (what more of a 10 years), since a lot of AAA games are revealed 1 year before the release.

Also:
release timeline for it with a single official delay announcement

I will make a bold prediction and say there will be some kind of psvr integration and they are going for simultaneous worldwide release.

This is their first multi platform title. Plus the expectations are really high after persona 4. Then there was the merger with Sega. Then there were their other projects.

Take all the time you need. But yeah, wouldn't be surprised that the PS4 port slowed them down a bit.

One missed opportunity was not having persona 4 golden ported to the PS4.

There's no reason to assume a Persona 3+4 HD won't happen down the road. I'm fact it's a safe bet it eventually will. Give us dual audio for the first time ever in those games, Atlus!

In hindsight, the first delay from "Winter 2014" to some unspecified time in 2015 was obviously due to them building a PS4 version of the game, too. Remember, this was only going to be released on PS3 upon its first teaser reveal. This new delay to "Summer 2016" is for them to polish up what the Persona team has admitted is the company's largest and most ambitious title to date. Let me reiterate: Persona 5 is the biggest game Atlus has ever made. This is straight from the horse's mouth. The development of this game also includes the creation of HD versions of the entire catalogue of personae/demons within the franchise, and you can bet your bottom dollar that those assets will be reused in other HD releases Atlus puts out in the future (including Shin Megami Tensei as both series share the same roster of demons).

Or basically everything Flux has posted lol.

The delays still suck, yes, but this game is an unprecedented milestone for the company.

Now to pray that the NA release is within a time span of less than five months from the JPN release. I won't be able to bear waiting as long as Persona 4's NA release was staggered form the JPN release back in 2008.

Taking time to make a pc port obviously.

No really, what are the chances that P5 comes to PC later after the playstation 3 and 4 release?

They either revealed the game way too early
or so many things have changed.

This is the real problem in my opinion. I want more publishers to follow the Fallout 4 trend of announcing and releasing in the same year.

There are just too many big releases out there and the current net culture honestly makes it hard to keep hype going for a full 2-3 year cycle. People tire of getting info piecemeal or some silly PR mistake is made which is blown out of proportion way too often.

Atlus hasn't even tested the waters yet. Don't expect it. And if they do, not within a couple of years.

Now that I think about it, whatever even happened to Etrian Odyssey V. :P

1. The game is said to be longer and bigger than Persona 3 and Persona 4. A game like that with Persona 5's looks probably takes some time to make.
2. They built an in-house engine expressly for the development of Persona 5.
3. They went through the trials and tribulations of Index and the Sega acquisition.
4. Somewhere along the line, a PS4 port was decided (possibly because of their ties to Sega).
5. Something happened regarding P4D's development and Dingo got kicked off from the project, which caused P Studio to assume the brunt of its development. Possibly causing some staff who were working on P5 to work more on P4D.
6. It'll probably be Atlus' biggest project yet. They want it to not crash and burn.
7. Timing. 2016 is Atlus' 30th anniversary and the Persona series' 20th anniversary. They announced that series festival thing, which is a neat timing for Persona 5.
8. Polish. Hashino said so himself.
9. It was explicitly stated that the new HD models have taken a considerable amount of time to create.
Was waiting for this post from Flux to /thread.

You can't rush the incoming game of forever people, you just can't.

No matter how hard I think, I still don't understand that people want games to be released as soon as possible. I'd rather wait patiently so they can make them into perfection.

It's not like you run out of video games to play while you wait. First world problem.

EOV artist Yuji Himukai sent a message stating that the team's still hard at work on Etrian Odyssey V on the latest Persona Stalker Club episode (on November 30, 2015).

didn't hear that. Cool to know. Don't really care about the game though, the demos of the series did nothing for me. Unless this one turns story heavy I'll skip it.

Are they making it on UE4? Because i heard from SE that its good for dev times, thats why it feels like the whole of FF7 R is complete. :P
