What's taking Rockstar long for this generation?

Lol, I couldn't remember all the JK titles so I looked them up, it's a hilarious clusterfuck, and I feel sorry for any parents who had to sort through that shit during holiday seasons for the later entries. My favorites are the second and fourth titles where the II is scooched to the other side of the colon.

It's all really quite silly.

My guess is that they're working on an entirely new engine for all of their current gen games, similar to what they did with RAGE/Euphoria. Probably something a bit more scalable too, for compatibility with "upgraded" consoles.

The next Red Dead will be called Red Dead Redemption 2. No one gives a shit about Revolver, so that word doesn't have any marketing clout. Red Dead Revolver might as well not even exist.

Rockstar always takes forever to develop they're games and with how GTA Online has taken off I wouldn't be surprised if that's a main focus for them atm

It's pretty simple.

Around the time of Max Payne 3, Rockstar changed their development model to have all their studios work on one game instead of having each of their studios make separate games.

On top of this, going into this generation, we switched from a standard development cycle of 2-3 years to a standard development cycle of 3-4 years.

Given all of Rockstar's staff works on one game, and that they're usually at least one year longer (though frequently two) with development cycles than everyone else, you would generally expect a new game out of them every 4-6 years.

You will probably only get one new game from them this generation, at least as a non-crossgen title.

Such a risky business model.... But I suppose Rockstar is successful and unique enough to get away with it more so than any other studio. Their games are pretty dependent on "size" too so I could see why they made the adjustment. They swing for the fences and seem to only hit homeruns every time they release a game.

I just hope it doesn't blow up on them. Then again, their war chest is massive I'm sure, and they could probably weather at least one poor selling game in this model, going 6 or so years without a significant revenue stream until the next game comes out.

But if they fuck up twice... 10 or so years is a long ass time not to have enough revenue coming in (as in, 8 years dedicated to two bad games then the need to invest another 3-4 years in a third game to recoup). Yes, GTA online is serving them well, so they could weather some of the storm that way too, but still... the size and scope of their business model is a bit too risky for my humble tastes.

Rebellion would be a better name suited for the American Civil War.
Yeah Rebellion is probably more catchy, but thought of Quantrill's Raiders when I came up with the name. Those were the infamous Confederate Bushwhackers guerrilla unit that the James brothers belonged to before going on to be outlaws after the war.

Post Civil War era would be ripe for some R* morally grey storytelling.

Probably won't release another game without a GTA Online equivalent. And if you want it to be good, well that shit takes time

Maybe they're still hammering out a deal to get these two in the next Red Dead game.

I mean, I won't say no to that.

Wonder how GTAO will influence the time and place of the next GTA.

On one hand, I could see Rockstar wanting to simply expand the current GTAO. E.g. Set GTA VI in San Ferrio or Las Venturas during the same time period. GTA VI being its own story, but in both it and GTAO, the map is simply expanded to include an entire new city and region.

But on the other hand, there's been so many mistakes, exploits, etc with GTAO that it could be appealing to have the next GTAO start from a clean slate so they can try get things more right. A lot of early exploits really hurt their RMT (selling cash cards) business and trivialized their value. The economy is still somewhat tainted by that so a new game/new economy could be appealing.

I don't think it's right to pass off the GTAV enhanced version. The work on the first person mode of that was very impressive. Wasn't just a shift in camera angle like most first person mods have been, they totally redid aspects of locomotion, player controls, and tons more... and it just shifts seemlessly when you switch between the modes.

GTAV is one of my favorite games this generation even though it came out for 360/PS3 orgiinally.

That said hoping to see somethign soon on RDR.

Geez, the new Midnight Club is taking ever so long!

I'd love that to happen maybe a good Midnight Club 2, would be nice or MC3. I'm going to take a guess and say the next Red Dead is going to be called Red Dead Resurrection.

"No one gives a shit about Revolver so we'll use the name of a game nobody gives a shit about in our next game about the Old West when we could have just called it something else entirely since nobody gives a shit, after all!"

Incredible logic. Just incredible.

In my opinion nope. It is sad that R* concentrated all their GTAV support on MP content and more-less gave middle finger to all people who bought and played only for Singleplayer experience.

They were disappointed in the sales of Episodes from Liberty City

"Both we and [Xbox-maker] Microsoft believe there was a big market for GTA IV episodic content," company CEO Ben Feder said during a call with investors on Thursday. "And some factors have affected their performance. Both were released significantly after the core unit Â… GTA IV, which was launched in April of 2008 and therefore weren't able to leverage GTA IV's initial marketing campaign and initial launch fervor."

"Episodes From Liberty City seems to have been most appealing to those who have finished GTA IV and wanted more story and gameplay," Feder said. "Which is a smaller market than initially expected. Despite the dour analysis, Feder did praise the episodes' critical acclaim and said they were "profitable contributors to the company, so we're pleased with them."

With that in mind, it's not too surprising that they didn't dive back into that again since they clearly put a lot of work into those expansions. GTAO has done extremely well for them (at last check its generated 500m), which means that they probably feel that single player DLC content isn't really needed. At least for now.

As far as I know they kinda promised more story content in 2014 or 2015 in one of the Newswire posts. It was like "keep checking Newswire for more story content later this year".

Their last games are still selling.

It's no different that Minecraft and Angry Birds.
When the sales have died, they'll release something.

In September it'll be 3 years since GTA V and since then there's been no announcement of SP DLC or any new game.

That's fucking nuts.

Unfair even.

yeah FPS mode is super well done... especially the sense of body.

I still mostly use TPS but I love using FPS for exploring or anything where you really interact with interiors ... robbing convenience stores, missions like The Long Stretch, Dead Man Walking, Fresh Meat.

/edit/ oh, and the guns looks faaaaantastic.graphically by far the best part of FP view are the updated gun models.

I think the SP DLC boat has long since sailed off. They originally said there wasn't going to be any, then kinda backtracked on that. Now almost three years in I hope only a small team is working on Online DLC and the rest of North is working on a new installment along with helping out the other teams working on Red Dead and whatever else they have in store.

I do think R* has several titles in development, and maybe we'll see them released yearly with GTA VIce closing the generation in 2019/2020.

Here's a guess:

Rockstar North is probably working on the next GTA/GTA Online?/Engine Improvement?
Rockstar San Diego is probably up on RDR3.
That leaves Rockstar Toronto, the same team that developed Max Payne 3. I'd love to see a new Franchise from these guys.
I wonder what is Leeds up to these days. Maybe The Warriors 2? One can only hope.

After the long and tumultuous developments of Max Payne 3, L.A. Noire and Agent, which hasn't even released yet, I think they'd rather play it safe and not announce anything before it's very close to release, maybe Ă  la Bethesda.

San Diego made RAGE. I'm not sure why North would be in charge of that.
Rockstar Vancouver made Max Payne 3, not Toronto. They're defunct.

Edit: Nevermind; they merged. Dumb me.

Yeah, I remember seeing a graph somewhere showing players' interest in DLC over time. Basically people are most interested in buying more content within the first couple weeks to the first month of release, and then every month after that the demand for more content drops off a cliff. Everyone criticizes companies for working on DLC concurrently with the main game and releasing it too quickly, but sales data shows that's when people are most interested and willing to spend money.

Hell, it's happened with me. I loved Bloodborne and Uncharted 4 enough to platinum both, but I still haven't gotten around to picking up The Old Hunters and my interest in more U4 content is declining rapidly as I've already played through it a few times and mentally moved on. If the single player DLC had been available for either of those within a couple weeks of launch I would have been happy to drop $20 on it.

Nah. The next game will be Red Dead R----

For no other reason than that it's a cool naming convention

The name doesn't matter. It could be called Xtreme Cowboy Fighters and as long as it's got that Rockstar logo on it it'll do okay

One thing I think they're underestimating is the positive impact the near universal acclaim that The Ballad of Gay Tony received had on the GTA brand.

GTA IV was a game that, although it got rave reviews, didn't seem to resonate with people quite like the previous games had due to the decreased emphasis on sandbox gameplay. TBoGT addressed that beautifully and lead to a lot more hype for GTA V than it would've had otherwise, going by nearly all of the GTA V pre-release threads on NeoGAF anyway.

I was initially a huge GTAO sceptic, and after playing it briefly at launch I became bored of it very quickly. I tried it again after the Heists update and was blown away, the amount of online content is crazy these days. Going back to SP now it almost feels kind of soulless, which is a complete reversal of the way I felt at GTAO's launch.

Even Rockstar won't go anywhere near a bunch of racists, rapists and child killers. They were disavowed by the Confederate Army.

I sincerely doubt R* has planned an announcement of a game that's no more than ~four months away.

2012: Max Payne 3
2013: GTAV
2014: GTAV PS4/X1
2015: GTAV PC
2016: Nothing, unless you want to be overly generous and count RDRedemption BC

Well, they also released ports for older GTA titles for iOS/Android and San Andreas for Xbox 360. And Max Payne I think for mobile..

Consider how many unique assets go into making a rockstar game and the upgrades they have to make to their engine for both better visuals and even more systemic gameplay than the last entry. Plus the size of the worlds themselves. Definitely gonna be a while before their next game is released.
