What's the best Pokemon game so far?

It's a pain to try to pick one because each one removes aspects of what made other games so good, but then has its own good points. But if HG/SS had the Gen 5 improvements with reusable TM's (and I guess ran faster, Gen 4 battles were too slow), it would be the best. That I've played.

I didn't play BW and BW2 has an underwhelming main game but some of the best post-game.

I'm on mobile right and I'd love to list reasons in-depth but it's gotta be Generation 2 (Gold / Silver)

I'm a big fan of "world" design so while other and newer versions may have far better and refined gameplay, I always felt Johto to be one of the best locations.
It felt like it had so much mystery and seeing how developed Kanto became over the years really drove home the "rural" (I'm not sure that it's the best word to describe it) feel of Johto. (I mean...other than Goldenrod City).

All of that detail in a goddamn Game Boy Colour cartridge. Sorcery!

Edit : after playing the originals and the remakes back to back, I really do prefer the GB soundtrack as well. The remake OST, WHILE STILL GOOD, feels like it loses a bit of character.
Especially the Final Elite Four/
Red
battle theme.

Yeah man, I loved the unoptimised engine, non existent difficulty, terrible story, terrible characters (especially the 'rival'), weird gen 1 pandering (oh look Snorlax is blocking the road again, how exciting!), Lumiose City...
Yeah..

Honestly X and Y was personally one of the biggest let downs ever for me. I was never one to complain about games being too easy but I felt like the difficulty broke the whole fun of the game. Felt like playing NSMBU with the Super Guide on the whole time or something

I'm glad a lot of other people liked it but I just couldn't stand it

For the competitive and breeding metagames:

XYORAS

For the single player: BW+B2W2+HGSS

For overall performance: RSFRLGE only games that were 60fps completely

1. Pokemon Black2/White2 is everything a Pokemon game should be. It's perfection in your palms.

2. HG/SS is nostalgic perfection. Perfect if you have a nostalgic itch.

Take these as fact and thank me later.

X/Y I guess. I hope Z or gen 7 will bring back the stuff from earlier games, it's hard to say. Every gen has a significant problem with it.

If you want a good single player experience, then Pokemon Platinum, HG/SS, and B2/W2 are your best bets. I had a good time playing them, and I felt that I had to put in effort for the Elite Four.

Playing Pokemon Y with the EXP share completely ruined that game for me, so I suggest you turn it off. The game is also just unpolished, dull, and slow. It feels rushed. It's good that you're enjoying the game, but I think the single player is the worst in the series.

X/Y and ORAS are primarily geared for online, so those games will keep you occupied if you're really into breeding/competitive play. Otherwise, it's disappointing. That's why some people are negative about it.

For me it is a toss up between Emerald and Black 2/White 2.

I loved Emerald, the Battle Frontier in Emerald made for my favorite post-game ever. Black 2/White 2 were just as awesome. I wasn't expecting too much out of Black 2/White 2 and they blew me away, that was the first time I kept playing a game for months after release since Emerald.

In my opinion, it's Emerald... but that's a very unpopular opinion.

EDIT: Maybe that's not as unpopular an opinion as I thought? I've always heard people say awful things about Gen 3, but there seem to be a lot of Emerald lovers in this thread!

After that, my favorites are Black/White and X/Y. Overall, I'd say Gen 3 > 5 = 6 > 2 > 1 >>>> 4. Didn't like Diamond/Pearl/Platinum at all. Black 2/White 2 are generally good but they don't measure up to Black/White.

I didn't play HeartGold/SoulSilver at all, and while I've heard great things, I know it runs on that chunky, slow-as-molasses Gen 4 engine, so that's kind of kept me away from them.

Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are actually great, but they don't quite stand up to the original Gen 3 games IMO.

RSE has the easiest RNG and Emerald is the only game where you can easily catch shiny Deoxys and Mew (Japanese version only).

HG/SS = B/W > R/S/E > FR/LG > D/P >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> X/Y

(Haven't played Black2/White2 or OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire yet.)

HeartGold/SoulSilver I love for how much content there is in the game (and the whole Kanto twist from the original blew my mind at the time). Black/White were great for simply shaking up the formula by having a distinct setting, a good story, and the fact that you encounter only new pokemon for the entirety of the single player.

Needless to say, X/Y was an amazing let-down. The story, coming off of Black/White, was going through the motions, there was a lackluster amount of content, and even the performance of in-game battles was riddled with framerate drops.

Hopefully, the additional time they're taking on the next game will mean something better in store for gen7.

I had my most fun with red + stadium, considering stadium adds post-game content and rent system adds challenge.
All those random battles I had with friends with random rented pokemon on my 64.

1. X/Y
2. Emerald
3. Black/White
4. FireRed/LeafGreen

I think those four are the real standouts in the series. The only one I couldn't into was Gold/Silver/Crystal, and, in turn, HG/SS, because I found the pacing of those games to be way off. It appeared, to me, as if quality had been sacrificed for fitting two regions in.

Gold and Silver. The remakes are great too, but the original had a rather charming quality to it.
FR/LG are better than the originals, the monster designs are polished and there are a few quality of life changes that really help (being able to run is the main one).
